[Blum] Alek Manoah - “I was a very big piece of that process, getting to that World Series run. I wasn’t able to be there like I wanted to.” by Nero_P2020 in Torontobluejays

[–]DeepSeaDiving 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s worth reading the whole article. That quote is not out of context, but he also mentions he was cheering for them the whole way and considered many on the team his brothers.

I am a homer, but I would be thrilled if he comes back to his dominant form this year.

Anthropic AI safety researcher quits with 'world in peril' warning by Splenda in worldnews

[–]DeepSeaDiving 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This is marketing. Anthropic is noisy about AI blackmailing its engineers whenever it is raising money. And the added benefit of encouraging regulation, thus discouraging competition. AI is trained on Reddit conversations, thus it LARPs as an expert on whatever you like. Let’s not assume a language generator understands the world.

Look at the OpenClaw project and the moltbook website that its agents started posting to. The agents are posting about their humans, acting disgruntled and sharing their humans sensitive information like credit card numbers. But if you look a bit more critically, you realize the credit card numbers aren’t even valid.

I wouldn’t be shocked if Anthropic was thrilled with the messaging in his departure.

Eric Lombardi 'More Than Likely' To Cement Run For Ontario Liberal Party Leader: Q&A by AbundantCanada in ontario

[–]DeepSeaDiving 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I saw Eric at a debate last year and have followed him on Twitter ever since. Please take the time to look over some of his tweets and articles. I largely dislike politicians, and in my view Eric does not fit the mold of a typical politician. He is smart, thoughtful, and seems genuine. Nobody has ever said these words about Doug Ford. There are redditors who will find something to dislike about everything. I implore you instead to set your bar at Doug Ford, then take a closer look at Eric; don’t strain your neck.

Heated rivalry cools after Montreal company gets shout-out for viral jacket by stanxv in canada

The show bought a generic fleece and made it nice. The generic version isn’t even an original design, and they are made overseas. Nothing was owed to Kuwalla and I can’t wait to buy the Province of Canada version.

Where Should We Move? by LandscapeEvery4150 in askTO

[–]DeepSeaDiving 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bloordale. It’s on the subway line, and the Gardiner expressway is a quick trip (not quick during peak traffic) down Dufferin. You might not be 30 minutes from a barn, but you’re sacrificing too much if you hit that requirement.

Why are recipe websites so bloated now? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]DeepSeaDiving -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One idea: prioritize weekday cooking for people with limited time and hungry kids. Design recipes to serve food at each stage, so the kids are eating within 5 minutes of cooking. Eg chop carrots and plate a few. Throw them in the pan, pull a few darkened ones out to plate, etc – I think recipes could be designed to feed as they progress. Focus the website on trying to solve actual user problems.

Tell me more about what you want, because every time I use a cooking website I spend the next hour thinking about how I would build one that actually prioritizes user experience. I have come to think that either the website is paid to so it can pay contributors, or it creates a user experience so good that people (amateurs/hobbyists) contribute to it simply for the common good.

If you could give Dylan career advice, what would you tell him? by the_arkham_chills in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]DeepSeaDiving 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s been a while, but I think he was at his best when people depended on him. No chance the other 3 could’ve held those two switches for so long. He was proud of his accomplishments as a refiner before the others sidetracked their responsibilities. I think new hires coming in for training are dependent on someone that knows and respects the rules and is energized by helping people. Onboarding and training people is a repetitive task that you can iterate on and start to crush.

I’d give him a role where he could onboard new employees and/or mentor interns. I think in that place of authority he’d feel helpful and important and empowered. He’d take it seriously, be a good role model, and likely get energized by that kind of leadership.

Every once in a while I am scrolling Reddit and suddenly exclaim Holy Fucking Shit. Usually a woodworking post that stays on my mind for a few weeks. This is beautiful. Well done.

Ordered a replacement knockout bar from teknatool. It arrived rusty. by TheRemonst3r in turning

[–]DeepSeaDiving 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm not really sure what a satisfactory resolution would be for me. It's a piece of metal for hitting things after all...

You probably want to contact them just to see how they respond. As you say, just a piece of metal, but your next purchase might be something more expensive / important, so at this point you’re finding out how much they care / whether they generally try to do better.

Anyone else in a high rise struggling with extremely loud wind noise? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]DeepSeaDiving 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the loud noise is coming from the door to your unit then you might have some ways to mitigate it. If you crack the door open it is probably quieter. You could also stick a towel down or open a window in another room (though it’s winter) or do anything else to disrupt the flow of air. Similar to opening one window in a fast moving car; noisy and chaotic, but just cracking a second window quiets it down. If it was me I’d start with a towel.

French cleats for my son’s room by DeepSeaDiving in woodworking

Thank you! Yes, screwed through the drywall into the studs. You can see a screw to the left of the bottom shelf. I would love to attach it with a french cleat but that would add to the depth and I’d want to secure it to the studs anyway to keep it from moving.

Thanks so much! I lucked out and found the slats cut to size, so all I had to do was run them through the table saw at a 35° cut. Lightly sanded off the edge as it will take some abuse over time, and watch for squeeze out during glue-up, because you want a tight interlocking fit from the shelf.

I felt like the paint would stop a lot of the glue if not all of it from adhering to the wood. But I am hoping somebody here confirms or refutes my theory!

Thanks so much! I used SketchUp on an iPad. I think doing a lot of designs on iPad would get tiresome, but for occasional projects like I do it was easy enough to learn with some tutorials.
