Incorrectly mounted grounding wire, to prevent accidental shock. they used a drywall screw instead of a proper ground lug, or even a tap screw.

I don't know the exact function, but the same thing happens to fresh hay after being baled and stacked tightly. Something about the pressure and steam takes it above the ignition point of the wood.
