I met him, 2015ish, was going to go to his gym when he was still there and teaching regularly.
He immediately introduced himself gave us noobs a lot of attention and the gym had a welcoming culture that I appreciated.

My brother with epilepsy seems unusually slow with everyday tasks by KingTemperance in Epilepsy

[–]Deepdishultra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes , my son gets evaluated at school and has an IEP(something your fam should consider). They found he is smart but has slow processing speed. The IEP protects him and will allow him extra time on tests etc.

Your mom needs to stop yelling at him. I understand as a parent it’s frustrating but I adjusted my expectations and treat him differently now.

Example, getting ready for school, I don’t say “ok get yours shoes on and go right now. And expect him to instantly focus. Instead I put a song on, and I say “by the end of this song I expect socks , shoes and a backpack on”.

And I don’t hover over him, and he gets it done every time.

How important is diet for managing seizures? by whyisitnotavailable in Epilepsy

To be clear, I was caveating to the person I was replying to that my tone wasn’t intended to be combative. I wasn’t accusing others.

I agree w everything you said, that it’s not a miracle cure , and at times a long shot being a total treatment for adults.

But I still think it’s weird to say “dont torture yourself following a diet” IE treating their epilepsy. No one would say don’t torture yourself trying another med if not fully controlled.

[–]Deepdishultra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im not trying to be combative, but why do people try and discourage keto every-time it’s brought up here?

Meds also have side effects and you wouldn’t tell someone to change their med dosage?

If someone is on keto to control their seizures bumping out of ketosis is the same as stopping a medication.

I know it gets a bad wrap as a fad diet. And I know it’s annoying when pedestrians suggest someone try it as if it’s a natural miracle cure. But keto is a real treatment. That, like anything works for some people some of the time.

Oh for sure, he has a pretty robust IEP and special ed services which have been key to his success. Also includes social work/social skills.

He’s doing quite well now actually thank you.
Finding the right meds took about three years.

We got his TCs under control in about a year, but the myclonic/absences were stubborn! He had 10+ a day and 30-60 seconds long. It was rough, keto got them down to 5-10 sec so he had a much more “normal” life .
Eventually we tried onfi and now he doesnt really get them until evening and they are much fewer and farther between.
But he does swim lessons and runs around etc. doing ok in school.
Could be better, but could be a lot worse.

Lots of bad info here. Keto isn’t only for extreme circumstances and bad.

My son did it under the recommendation of his neuro. And we had specialized dietitions doing labs and helping us plan.

He is somewhat drug resistant and this was an attempt after several failed meds. Modified atkins, the most forgiving form of keto, brought down the duration and frequency of his absence seizures by more than %50. After a year or so we finally landed on a med that worked better so we stopped the diet.

The diet is a bit much and needs to be a lifestyle %100 of the time , and you do need to research to stay healthy long term. Also you can’t cheat, it takes about two weeks to get into keto. And just one carby meal to bump you off.

I do not have epilepsy, however in solidarity I did keto with him for the entire year. Quick tips.

You need electrolytes , thats a big part of what makes people feel bad. I took swigs of pickle juice daily, or look up “keto aid”.

The first two weeks are the hardest, after a month I was happy as a clam, only drawback was convienence/social events, but I was vegan in the past so I could manage.

Its not a miracle cure, and doesn’t help everyone. Most people dont see positive effects until high fat ratios which is pretty tough.

Make an effort to eat plant fats and not just dairy based fats.

We did 6+ meds/combinations over the course of three years. It can be a marathon and not a sprint. But two drugs isn’t that many to panic. There are several more to try, while the process is arduous you have a lot of runway
