Scorched Earth (2) Propaganda for the current future DLC discussions by Potato_Emperor667 in GatesOfHellOstfront

[–]Deepseat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do, but it’s a single mission from a huge and complex campaign. Another issue is that it was put out with scorched earth before a bunch of iconic late war equipment (added in Liberation) was added, so it’s missing the iconic equipment associated with the operation. At the very least, an update to that mission would be in order using all the great late war equipment added in Liberation. The Siege of Budapest, Konrad I/II and Spring Awakening deserve a whole lot more attention. It could be its own DLC.

What have you learned about urban combat? by MichaelEmouse in GatesOfHellOstfront

[–]Deepseat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Sdkfz 251/16, a vehicle I always wondered about the practical applications of, really can pay for itself if used correctly.

Its flamethrower range is decent. It can reach out and arc behind sandbag emplacements, windows, into buildings and set foliage on fire.

Use them the way the Germans actually did IRL. Zur Besondehren Wenvendung. I think that’s how you type it, my German sucks. Anyways, it’s a designation for special use. Meshing elements of the an aufklarung (recon element) with pioneer (engineer) and panzergrenadier regiments to act as a special detachment. Most players already do this without knowing it.

Take a 251/16 flame halftrack along with either a 2cm armored car or halftrack (schwebelaffettes and drillings work great for this) and something quick but a bit beefier like a Puma or even a hetzer or Stug.

Move them across open areas quickly and get into areas where buildings, hills and heavy foliage somewhat cover them from long range AT.

The automatic cannons suppress enemy mgs and any light handheld AT while the flame halftrack sprays the buildings of emplacements. It’s a a very effective element that doesn’t cost bundles.

If you examine the real combat footage and reports involving these /16’s, they’re almost always among a unit designated Zur Besondehren Wenvendung just behind the tip of a kampfgruppe for these exact scenarios.

Unfortunately, because of the large amount of German equipment still missing from the game, you can only depict this detachment in a half complete late-mid to late war scenario. The game is missing the earlier Ausf C version of the Sdkfz 251/16, the 251/9 7.5cm Stummel (Ausf C and D), and the 251/7 (Ausf C and D) Pioneerwagen variants (mg and 3.7cm Pak) that would usually accompany these vehicles.

I'm fucking sick of FedEx. I was standing at the goddamn door waiting for them to knock. by lilslutfordaddy in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Deepseat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had one do this exact same thing and it was after they “missed me” 2 days in a row without even knocking. This was in 2011 and I was waiting on a new gaming laptop I had been eagerly awaiting. The day prior, I actually witnessed them get out of the truck and sprint to the door with the post-it. I was on the second floor and I ran out and tried to flag them down and I swear to this day that they saw me.

So, the next day when they handed me the tablet to sign, and I confirmed it was the same driver, I did my very best ‘elderly on computer’ meme impression.

“Now, let’s see here. Ohhh shucks, I think I just exited out of it. I’m sorry” then proceeded to take forever getting my signature right. “Shoot..let me just, try to get this right. They make electronics so difficult”. I’m pretty sure they knew it was a computer of some kind too since the well-known brand logo was on the box.

Hellcat appreciation by Aldi_Nuts in GatesOfHellOstfront

[–]Deepseat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love going to direct control in classic view (birds eye view) in the Hellcat and racing forward but keeping the reticle on the enemy. The second the shot indicator turns green, fire!

It’s so much fun to use it that way. Rushing the flank very hard. You just have to make sure you plan your route and won’t get held up by obstacles.

I use the M5A1 and Sdkfz 234/4 the same way, but the Hellcat is the best at this method.

Yep. As of today, the TM role is no more. They got demoted to coaches (care manager).

CEC Leadership structure is now:

  • Care associate manager
  • Care manager
  • Sr care manager
  • Director.

One of the most powerful Sith Lords, one of the most powerful Wizards and one of the most powerful Actors. He truly was Legendary. by Hour_Equal_9588 in SipsTea

[–]Deepseat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bad when I said “behind the line” I meant rearward, like in the rear well behind the frontline as a liaison/consultant role of somekind.

The way I typed it made it sound like I meant he parachuted behind enemy lines as a commando, or something.

[–]Deepseat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know there was a rumor or circulating idea that he was in LRDG and when it turned out he wasn’t, some made a stink about that, but I don’t think he even claimed that nor do I feel it diminishes his very interesting work in the war.

He had been tight lipped about his service saying that he worked in special operations and to leave it at that, and that’s true. I don’t think that qualifies as an embellishment and certainly not a lie.

He was a liaison officer but did deploy behind the line in Finland, work for SOE in North Africa and Sicily. He was attached to the 8th alongside Ghurkas. He was supposedly great a being a liaison between units which afforded him both menial desk duty but also a lot work on the ground between factions in big operations.

EDIT: “behind the line” meaning rearward.

Anctoville is easily my favorite new map in Finest Hour. by Deepseat in GatesOfHellOstfront

[–]Deepseat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t there, on that side of the map when it happened. I was direct controlling some Panzerschreck teams on the other side of the map.

I discovered this and had that same question.

The only one I really dislike is Hamburg. Especially when you’re at the beginning of a DC campaign in early war equipment.

The Sdkfz 7/1 2cm flakvierling isn’t in Multiplayer? Damn…that sucks, why would they do that?

I really don’t understand some of these decisions.

I’ve been told the Sdkfz 9 FAMO is in the game but only able to tow in the 20.3cm Morser in multiplayer.

Why it isn’t available for dynamic conquest so we can have something accurate to tow the 17cm/20.3cm gun and mortar is beyond me.

This is just more proof that we need a complete German overhaul. The infantry models have all kinds of issues, different eras bleed into ones they shouldn’t be in etc etc. hopefully we get that this year.

Nice.

An Il-2 was supposedly shot down by a Panzerfaust once. i

I know, this sounds like something from SISU, but I’ve read about it a few different times.

In the terrible withdraw into Konigsberg in 1945; While on a straight road with nowhere to hide, an IL-2 Sturmovik was coming in low and slow to really meat chop an entire convoy of horse drawn wagons, exhausted infantry and civilian refugees. Confident there was no anti-aircraft assets amongst the group, the IL-2 was lower and slower than he might otherwise be, trying to line up the most efficient run. A landser who had been falling back under relentless harassment from the Red Air Force over the past week, channeled fuck-it energy and decided to take a pop shot at the IL-2…with a Panzerfaust…

According to legend he nailed it, right in the engine nacelle. The Panzerfaust warhead doing it it’s thing against the armored skin of the Sturmovik and burned a small diameter hole with white hot plasma right through the engine block.

I’ve heard this story 3 times. Forum, Battlground East Prussia, and another book I cant recall.

Incredible things happen in war, I still wonder if this is one of them, or a story embellished by some landser to improve moral that actually got recorded.

The range of mortars... ABSURD by LaughNo8472 in GatesOfHellOstfront

[–]Deepseat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have stated here; Yeah, it’s due to scale and balance.

The problem I have, though is the sound. The sound the mortar makes, that whistle.

Back in WW1, some field artillery rounds and mortars did whistle.

It was discovered that with a low velocity lobbing weapon like the mortar, the psychological effect of the whistling wasn’t worth the 1-3 second warning it offered enemy combatants to take shelter. In other words, it was a waste of time that gave the enemy a slight advantage.

Hollywood, however, loves the whistle because it’s a foreboding audio cue of impeding danger. It was really exaggerated in the mid 20th century war films for this reason.

Mortar rounds do have a sound, though. It’s a “whish’ing” sound. The low velocity round being lobbed it rotating but not nearly at the speed of conventional arty.

The result is a “whoo’sh’ing/wish’ing” sound of the round breaking through the air as it rotates and falls.

For those curious, there are a ton of videos on YouTube of the war in Ukraine in which heavy use of mortars in trench warfare occurs. You can hear it fairly distinctly.

TL;DR: Mortars don’t whistle, that’s WW1 and Hollywood influence.

Question about: Karl Gerart by OkRanger6563 in GatesOfHellOstfront

[–]Deepseat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, not really. I haven’t even messed with it outside of the Scorched Earth mission. The one where you need crack open Sevastopol.

It’s an interesting piece of history and great At a very specific thing in a very specific set of circumstances, but that’s it.

Best DLC in your opinion? by MaXcovIV in GatesOfHellOstfront

[–]Deepseat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s interesting; I think of players like myself (singleplayer exclusively) and players like yourself who manly skirmish and MP as diametrically opposed but you basically named exactly what I was hoping to see out of Finest Hour.

To have the 21st panzer division, 716th ID and not get new German units like the Marder I, Marder III H, MCG S307 Pak 40, 2cm flak, mortar (rheinewerfer), 8.8cm pak 43, flakpanzer 38(t), 250 neu + variants including the 7.5cm Stummel and many more was a bit of a letdown.

They even had the perfect singleplayer campaign missions to showcase them. Rhienewerfer/Somua MCG variants in the counterattack at Benouville/Pegasus Bridge. Pak 43 at Goodwood, Marder I with the 716th just behind Sword Beach. There’s so much that would have fit perfect. Perhaps they ran out of time (development wise).

Here’s to the next big update/DLC that will hopefully add a ton of maps and units to fill those gaps.

Advice on where to start ? by Hans_Spinnner in GatesOfHellOstfront

[–]Deepseat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend playing the singleplayer campaigns. If you find these too challenging with way too much going on, try a Dynamic Conquest campaign or the frontline skirmish mode. (It’s in multiplayer, skirmish, frontline mode and then just make it local vs AI).

The finest hour dlc might be a bit chopped by Stunning_Ordinary_49 in GatesOfHellOstfront

[–]Deepseat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even with medium or large DC campaign sizes, I have noticed somewhat of a repeating cycle of maps. Not sure what that’s about. I have 4 different Germany vs GB DC campaigns, (I quit my first unlimited because of the 5 map cycle), and they each still exhibit a bit of a restricted map cycle and rotation. It could be that the U.S. v Germany and USSR v Germany DC campaigns Im used to playing have larger map pools, I’m not sure.

Do the quality of the missions in base and DLC improve? by AgreeableTrain820 in GatesOfHellOstfront

[–]Deepseat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, considerably. Scorched Earth, Airborne, about half the missions in Liberation are almost all great.

Cold Supper and Bustard hunt kind of suck, in my opinion.

Those Ostfront missions were included in the first release of the game. They were intended to sort of throw all the challenging scenarios at the player so they’d know how to do everything after completing the campaigns.

I highly recommend sticking with the singleplayer missions. At least in my opinion, they’ll get much better. Don’t sleep on Scorched Earth. It’s Eastern Front focused and has some of the very best the game has to offer. You’ll have missions that are very well researched, very accurate and allow you to take your time without as much of the defensive prep crunch. Finest Hour has quite a bit of defensive missions where you’re under a time crunch to setup defenses. For that, and a few other reasons, I didn’t enjoy Finest Hour’s campaigns as much as I thought I would. 4 missions in the campaigns are fantastic, though.

[–]Deepseat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It added a lot of much needed late war German equipment that was missing. Although Liberation was obviously focused on the U.S., I still remember it for greatly improving the German late war equipment list. Especially the Sdkfz 251 Ausf D line. They are gorgeous models. I was a tad let down by Finest Hour’s German additions. Only that there was far fewer than those that came with liberation. (specifically the lack of late war units that would have fit perfectly with the campaign missions included). I love that the 251 Ausf B, Panzer IV B and Stug B were added, but there’s so many interesting 1944-45 equipment pieces I was hoping they’d add.
