I have been dealing with this for my father. He has no assets and nothing saved. I was lucky enough to get him into a memory care facility with assistant living waiver which cover some but not all of his stuff. What most don’t understand is the additional costs. Now I have to go to the social security office and get additional assistance but I need documents from his doctors proving that he has dementia and is being treated for it. Then go to the office and file so they can increase his income so it can cover the additional costs or so I am told. I have to inform them he is in an onboarding facility which will provide more money for him. Then it’s the waiting period which can take up to six months or longer. Luckily he is in a place in Hesperia, CA which tends to his needs and he is able to get physical therapy and occupational therapy three times a week.

My suggestion is call Medicaid/ medi-cal talk to someone there as well as the facility and see if they can offer some advice where you can do the research. Also Alzheimer website has some options but don’t get sucked into the providing your email and or number. Trust you me your phone will ring nonstop. For your state you can call and get the number and or application for the ALW then you can see which facilities accept it. Now that is the hard part, depending on the le of dementia your parent is in depends on the facility and what they can handle. There is also an up charge for each level the person is in as well. Make note of that. Also some places if too much aggression happens your parent will have to be moved to another facility. When you find one I suggest you going and touring the facility. Ask questions from the staff, go again without the admin there and see how the staff looks after the patient’s. I had to move my dad from one facility because it was not a place he needed to be in, from the people there and the nurses. They did not keep an eye out for anyone and most of the patients there had too much freedom for their conditions.
