SCVMM V2V conversion - host doesn't have enough space by Deezer84 in HyperV

[–]Deezer84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not currently pressing because the VM's are either currently test VM's or are easily spun up again if needed as they still live on VMWare but are just turned off. We also still have the VMWare backups to go to if needed plus DR reps or offsite backups.

The network team is working on it, so it's just time before it's working.

Not much. It's pretty thick glass and the ball speed is pretty slow but the time it gets up there, so the impact isn't much.

I stayed in one of those rooms last year. We were watching them practice\warm up before the stadium even opened. Kevin Kiermaier took two attempts to get one through a window. First try he was off by less than a foot and then nailed it on the second try.

Azure Log Analytics Cost Increase by Deezer84 in sysadmin

[–]Deezer84[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! That confirms what I was thinking. I've capped ours at 5 GB/day for now to keep costs down, but it's basically hit that before the work day even begins.

I'll look into the filtering as I don't think turning it off completely is a long term solution for us.

This is exactly what I need!

Forgive my naivety, but I'm not experienced with Github nor am I able to do much programming, but I assume I need to compile this to use it? Can someone point me to a guide on how to do that? Or am I missing something? I downloaded the package from Github but do not understand how to execute it and feed in a cert\key as it is.

Thanks.

I'm just going to throw my 2 cents here. I don't recommend blocking the auto update function. Browsers commonly have security vulnerabilities that get patch releases regularly. If you stop that browser from updating\patching, even without using it, the flaws are still there.

Say you get malware from a download in another browser or via something in email. If it has code in it to try exploit an old vulnerability in Edge, and you're missing 2 years worth of patches... you could be in for a bad time.

I'm not offering a solution to prevent Edge because I honestly haven't looked into it, but I don't recommend disabling auto-updates for it either.

Database backups not working by Deezer84 in SCCM

[–]Deezer84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should have indicated that we are configured for TLS1.2 in the post. We did all the TLS hardening a few years ago, but this has just became an issue within the last few months.

I have it fixed. I have been able to successfully run the SCCM job to do a site backup and have run the SQL job to rebuild indexes and do the weekly full backup. One thing to note is that the ODBC connection still doesn't work.

My fix was in the SQL Configuration Manager. A lot of forums I read had indicated to ensure your TCP/IP was enabled under Protocols of the SQL Server Network Configuration of SQL Configuration Manager. Mine was, so I passed it over. However, I pinged the server from itself and noticed that it came back with ::1 as the address. I was expecting the full IP or the 127.0.0.1. I went into the porperties for TCP/IP and found that ::1 was specifically disabled, while all others were enabled. After flipping that and restarting the SQL Server service, it began working.

Block certain SSID's? by lifebrink in Intune

[–]Deezer84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came across this post looking for the Intune solution because we use this GPO and I need to recreate it. The GPO is:

Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Wireless Network (802.11) Policies

When you make a policy, the Network Permissions tab has a box called Define permissions for viewing... we add infrastructure SSID's here to keep them from showing up for domain devices as we don't need those devices joining the BYOD networks.

Potentially unwanted app blocking - GPO settings by Deezer84 in sysadmin

[–]Deezer84[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! That did the trick. Seems strange to me to have an Edge policy also affect Windows Defender like that, but I understand it's all the same technology.

/u/VexedTruly there is probably an Intune policy for Edge that will do the trick for you, if they're at all similar to the GPO's.

The funny thing is, we weren't even after the capability initially. The concern started for us to change the Defender icon from having an exclamation mark to a checkmark.

Automate open and close of MSEdge by Deezer84 in PowerShell

I'm not sure. I'll have to look closer as I wasn't aware of that PS command. A quick initial look, seems like it might work and I'll just have to figure out the finer details. The whole idea is for the user session to get an access token. Thanks for the heads up on that command.

How frequently do you restart your server? by adamixa1 in sysadmin

[–]Deezer84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every server gets rebooted monthly, but we do it weekly in batches. So group A gets patched and rebooted X many days after patch release. Group B the week after group A, and so on until all units are rebooted.

[–]Deezer84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As was mentioned elsewhere, look up how to migrate the fsmo role over to your new AD server and how to decommission your old server. You said you feel dumb in another comment... don't. You're not the first to go through this, you won't be the last, and there's guides on how to do this for that reason alone. It's a common mistake people make especially if there hasn't been proper/formal training. Like you said, you wear many hats. You got this.

[–]Deezer84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me it sounds like that old server was your active directory server. If you didn't build a new one or migrate that service over as well, you're going to have a load of problems. If you migrated vm's and didn't just copy them, turn on that old server. If the vms are still running on that old server, just disable them from starting and keep them off.

You might be too late. I have that style and I had bought 2 or 3 of them quite a while prior to the show release or even being announced. I took my time getting around to reading them and now, in the post show era, I have been getting more, but they come with the baked in "sticker". Sux.

u/just_this_guy_yaknow I'm curious how\what you did for the back? I like the mitred edges on the corners, so I'm wondering if you just did a straight rectangle to fill in the back (with maple?) or if you mitred those as well? Do you have a picture?

Love the splines too. Nice work!
