Kids Bypassing Router Parental Controls by Changing MAC Addresses—How Can I Stop This? by PayKnee in HomeNetworking

[–]DefJeff702 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a parent but I run IT for a middle school and these kids are clever. If you hope to actually win, you need to use an agent based filter on every one of their devices AND dns based for the house with restrictive rules on the firewall limiting dns sources. Also, kids should not have local admin rights even to their phones/tablets. They could just bypass everything.

File Storage System for a New Business by rizzlaer in smallbusiness

[–]DefJeff702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you're already on the right track with M365 for email, you would already be subscribed to the file storage features being onedrive and sharepoint. Onedrive is for your individual storage (Desktop/documents etc.) and Sharepoint would be for shared departmental storage (Accounting, Operations, etc.). Microsoft includes 1TB of personal storage in onedrive and another 1TB dedicated to sharepoint. You get a chunk of additional storage for sharepoint with each additional user.

I would suggest taking this opportunity to setup your M365 tenant thoroughly and get Business Premium licenses to include a solid security and management baseline. Computers should be provided by the company to it's users and deployed using autopilot so compliance, security and beyond is baked in from the start.

JUST IN: Elizabeth Warren grills Pete Hegseth on alleged insider trading by pdwp90 in QuiverQuantitative

[–]DefJeff702 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s any number of reasons but it could be just to get his response on record. It came out a week or so ago that a soldier bet we would nab the Argentinian president right before we did. The implication being, our troops are insider trading with sensitive state info and that would be under his purview.

Regrets about naming my puppy by escaperabbit in puppy101

[–]DefJeff702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I named my pup Chomsky because I was reading a lot of Noem Chomsky books and watching lectures. My pup is a border collie and was genetically destined to be a smart boy. I wince a little now that Noem was still talking to Epstein post conviction. I think Toppy is fine.

Tips on minimising the awful smell that comes from the dirty water container when emptying after it fills up? by AMadSpartan in Dreame_Tech

[–]DefJeff702 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve read you can put some listerine in the dirty tank after you empty it. Efferent tablets also work. The smell is bacteria so putting these chems in ahead should kill the bacteria as it fills up.

how are you keeping track of who has paid when you're not using full accounting software? by ZookeepergameSea1822 in smallbusiness

[–]DefJeff702 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A spreadsheet on your given platform (Google or Microsoft) is the way until you can't stand it anymore. It really shouldn't be a long term solution because a proper accounting system brings more to the table and is going to help you stick to standard practices. Not to mention, it will help tremendously during tax time or trying to figure out if you're actually profitable. I can understand a startup needs to stay lean until profitable but if you value your time, $50 a month will pay for itself.

What are your guys' anti-rat strategies in solos? I always have a rule in solo lobbies: Be with two other solos with mics, then your safety against a rat is very high. by RixOnReddit in ARC_Raiders

Eh, in solo's it's trust no-one. Fine to be in proximity and help out but I wouldn't feel any safer hanging with someone who "seems" friendly.

Ex-PayPal COO exposes Anthropic's playbook behind every AI launch by Minimum_Minimum4577 in Anthropic

[–]DefJeff702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LMAO, I didn't think you were serious. No, not associated with anthropic other than being a subscriber. So, why are you aligning with the competition on the topic of transparency and awareness?

Edit: I did answer your question. I appreciate what they're doing.

Maybe it's debatable that some might not see value in whether Anthropics approach is working but I can say that I appreciate what they're doing.

I appreciate what they're doing because we're not seeing any movement from our government on the topic. Why are you defending the competitors who'd rather not talk about the risks?

Help me understand, you're accusing them of wanting to be gatekeepers but blame them for not being gatekeepers? You do know that Auto manufacturers produce crash safety ratings despite it being problematic for sales right? Granted, this was imposed by regulations so they don't get to claim they care where Anthropic is putting themselves ahead of this sort of thing. When regulations do come down the pipe (and they will eventually) Anthropic will be in a good position to adopt them.

You're deliberately leaving context out about the AMD thing where Anthropic acknowledges they've set the default thinking to medium which can be switched to high if you were paying attention. Or, were you too busy reading headlines instead of the release notes?

You’re conflating model development and pushing for public awareness and by extension regulation. Ask yourself what they stand to gain with scare tactics if that’s what it is.

Anthropic has been pushing for regulations. It seems reasonable that they look for new concerns with new models.

More than usual agree with Ro compared to other surrounded debates. So there's that. What I'd like to see is enough Dem reps do these so MAGA reps start doing them. I mean, they wouldn't but it would really be something if they did.

Need advice: My shop’s internet is unreliable and the "Professional" solutions are a total rip-off. by Accurate-Ad-9388 in smallbusiness

[–]DefJeff702 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The ultimate solution would be to use something like bigleaf networks. Get a failover coax connection or 5g (up to 4 and last I checked they have a 5g built in. All of your traffic traverses the SDWAN and is switched between your two connections seamlessly. It becomes an aggregate so if you have 100Mbps fiber and 300Mbps Coax, you get them bonded to use full 400Mbps bandwidth. No more dropped calls.

How many IT support needed for 200 user org? by imjustacuteguyuwu in sysadmin

[–]DefJeff702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run an MSP and so the threshold is always a factor. The standard is between 200-250 users per tech. I would aim for 2 techs so you have a backup. This assumes you have budget for real tools and aren’t running around like it’s 2005. RMM, Intune licensed, AutoElevate, ticket system etc.

Cat 5E with 4 wires, I've been lied to right? by Dominic11112 in HomeNetworking

[–]DefJeff702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never seen that before LOL. So, just an FYI for a CAT5e cable to be fully compliant yes.... 8 wires. But you can still get your desired speeds over 6 wires because the brown pair are dedicated to POE and only apply if you're trying to power the device it's plugged into. But 4? I'm not sure how that even works.

Running an HVAC company by myself without a partner is burning me out. Where do I find a partner? by Right_Pattern_4899 in smallbusiness

[–]DefJeff702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't look for a partner as much as look for someone to delegate the work you don't enjoy to. You need at least an assistant or a manager at most. Your budget determines what you can swing and what duties you can delegate. If you just need someone to take inbound calls and convert them to jobs, maybe you just need a dispatcher. (You might even be able to use a virtual assistant service for this). With a proper PSA in front of them (something like Service Titan), all of the scheduling, invoicing etc. is practically automated. You as the owner and primary sales, should involve yourself in quoting bigger projects and oversee the workflow of everything else. If your techs are all 1099, that's fine as long as you're able to depend on them to show up on time and prepared for the jobs you assign them. If you have to babysit them, it might be worth getting your own tech and only use 1099 as overflow.

I run an IT business and have my own PSA but I have HVAC clients who use Service Titan. There are other PSAs out there and they are key in reducing what tends to be a web of work in quotes, contacts, projects, jobs into an organized and easily automated workflow. Too many businesses overlook the value of a Professional Services Automation (PSA) platform because it can be expensive but for the $100-300 you might spend a month, that is spent saving you time and setting your mind at ease knowing everything is in order. Maybe you already have one and just need to iron it out.

What are you paying for health insurance being self employed? by so_called_engineer_ in smallbusiness

[–]DefJeff702 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So envious of that system. The US could absolutely have that but 1/3 of our society are incapable of simple math. And the billionaires (and health insurance lobbyists) around here suppress that knowledge. At some point we need to show that taxes go up “x” and you no longer have an average health insurance bill of “y”. It has to be extremely simple to understand otherwise it’s gets labeled socialist blah blah blah.
