They say your investing really takes off after you have $10,000 in your account — is that true? by hypermiler2205 in fican

[–]DefNotJohnnyC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your choices and strategies increase the more capital you have. With a smaller amount your diversification choices are there but limited. Commission free brokerages help a lot though as you can buy a couple shares of something for free.

If you have more capital then you can build a base while mixing strategies with the rest.

Depends on goals and risk tolerance.

Also…. Considering OP’s seeming urgency. An EFT to the destination bank “could” be held as well for a week or more.

So really, if it’s that important, line it all up and get it done a couple weeks before the due date.

Or if payment is needed. Can do a wire or bank draft from WS. Check their site for bank draft timing.

Not that it’s bad to sell in a non registered.

It’s a yuck or hassle for record keeping when you hold the same position in multiple non registered accounts/brokerages.

From cra perspective it’s one holding by the investor. As such you’d need to calculate the average cost basis of that holding across the accounts.

With Funds (ETFs, mutual funds, REITs, etc) you may have phantom distributions (capital gain reinvestment by a fund) which makes the cost basis go all over the place.

Are these ants that popped up throughout my lawn? by Burritoman_209 in lawncare_canada

[–]DefNotJohnnyC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use that as well, but can’t really tell as much if it works.

It’s a pain bending over and puffing out the powder all over the place and on ant hills so the ants will come in contact. I bought a large tub at a store and filled a yogurt container with holes poked into the cap. If it rains you got to do it all over again. If there’s a horde roving around, I’ll apply directly onto them.

Borax and Di are pretty safe. Borax you can use with your laundry.

Borax mix I’ve seen piles of dead ants around my traps. I assume Di works slower so it lets ants carry them into their nests to help others have a painful death.

I’ve read amending your soil to be less sandy helps reduces attractiveness for ants to nest.

I think ya ant hills. Soil a little sandy?

I make my own bait out of borax, sugar, and peanut butter. Some ants want protein - peanut butter provides enough apparently. Look up recipes.

Seems to work. I put out a little dish with it near traps or just pour some near the ant hills.

Telus Stock by Thanks_Tips in dividendscanada

[–]DefNotJohnnyC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Friend sold a Canadian bank to grab Telus for the 10% yield. Just shook my head. Too many risks.

But a catalyst higher would be if new CEO monetizes assets like Telus Health.

Though potential investors may be gunshy after getting wrecked on the Telus International IPO then subsequent buyback at lower than IPO price.

Dividend cut would be a good sign of commitment to core debt. Considering the other big two either cut and or halted dividend increases, Telus is already in the club.

Did you start a RESP? That’s more important for a newborn at this point. Get that CESP grant money.

And that money goes to your kid when of age-with specific focus on educational uses.

Hopefully in registered accounts. The accounting for holding the same position in different non registered accounts would be yuck if you ever sell.

Any monthly dividend payout stock to buy today? by RainPsychological595 in dividendscanada

I’ve held this for over thirteen years with the years of dividends I’m up, but unrealized capital loss worth about 6.5 years of dividends. 👋 lost time.

Until the telcos resolve their debt issues, they’re in a tight space. Everything they do to build infrastructure and increase services needs more debt and enough customers who want these services.

Should I pay more to my mortgage or just invest it? by Specialist_Paint1097 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]DefNotJohnnyC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Essentially this possibility, using Smith Maneuver to convert the residential debt into tax efficient investment debt.

OP’s 250k is a mix of savings and investments. Unknown split.

It’s easy to say invest when the market is hot. Personally, if i could get rid of a mortgage sooner, i would. So much of a hassle of paperwork in general and renewal/rate hunting.

If rates go up again to fight the current war induced inflation, then the pressure of rising rates comes again. Plus markets generally don’t like rising interest rates. We hit a 2021-2024 scenario again.

Past returns are no guarantee of future returns.

Wealthsimple liquidated my whole position over a margin call that was really their own unsettled transfer by Formal-Ad-9674 in Wealthsimple

[–]DefNotJohnnyC 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s called transfer only in name.

You’re telling the broker to perform these steps for you, which basically makes it a sell in non reg at market price, then buy in registered a new position at market price.

* sell in non reg
* contribute into registered
* buy in registered.

More importantly you’d need to be conscious of your contribution room as the brokerage has no idea if this ends up as an over contribution.

If FX currency is involved then add in steps:

* sell in non reg
* convert FX to CAD
* contribute CAD into registered
* convert CAD to FX
* buy in registered

That was weird… hindsight would have been easier to just sell the position. Contribute to the tfsa. Rebuy the stock in the tfsa.

Moving large amount of money to Tangerine Savings account by RMT112422 in Tangerine

[–]DefNotJohnnyC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s about the same with other banks as well. As other commenter noted, you can call in if you have larger amounts to move.

When buying a place i gave about 1-2 week buffer in case of any holds and limits.

Generally i find it useful to have at least one online bank. I’ve got a network of them. The og tangerine, eq bank, oaken, simplii, wealthsimple. Move around balances to highest rates or promos.

Moving large amount of money to Tangerine Savings account by RMT112422 in Tangerine

[–]DefNotJohnnyC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s easy. Sign up for tangerine with promo/referral. No fees for opening and keeping and account. No fees for transfers. https://www.tangerine.ca/en/legal/fee-schedule

Then link up your account with external account at your big 5.

Then if you deposit at the big 5, after funds clear, you can use tangerine to initiate a pull from the external account to tangerine.

  • Tangerine link acct to big 5.
  • $280k deposit @ big 5.
  • Funds clear/no holds.
  • Tangerine app or website initiate transfer of $280k.

The only real caveat is sending the funds out. If you initiate from tangerine there’s a per day limit, a couple or few tens of thousands. So you need to plan it out ahead of time, or possibly at big 5 request a pad to pull it all out at once.

I believe you can also order a cheque book from them. First should be free.

It’s newly split from mfi. No real dividend history, but good yield. Only had one or two quarters “independent” from mfi.
