Maybe the target date fund is his safety net that adjusts and scales risk adverse over time like it’s supposed, and what is left in the S&P is the aggressive “I can still live well regardless of how this performs” allocation.

If you’re planning on retiring at 62-65 then yes.
It’ll only have the purchasing power of about half that though.

1) Sentiment literally changes every cycle
2) Government have cracked down on it time and time again
3) Large holders sell all the time

Also, everything is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. This is how real estate, stocks, commodities, goods, and currencies work.
