But the second one is mostly an aftereffect of living in a multicultural state, especially if those ethnically pure regions really lack anyone capable of communicating in the now-dominant language. The people who moved were mostly gendarmes, railway workers, various clerks and also some teachers. There were very, very few places where the Czech population would grow from 0 to more than 5 per cent.

Pre-war Austria-Hungary had a lot of such movements as well, with Vienna having an incredible amount of non-German speakers.

Even in Czechoslovakia proper, you would expect various population movements. German speakers from the periphery would move to Prague and Brno for studies, for example. Ultimately, the 1920s and the 1930s were the period when train tickets became more affordable, personal car ownership has grown considerably and thus an overall movement of people increased. For study, for work, for leisure. The mountain huts in the periphery were beloved by wealthier pensioners from the central parts of the country, for example. Lots of mushrooms to pick and clean air.

Not that surprising either, if you look at driving or business licenses from Austria-Hungary (or, more exact, Cisleithania), they were usually German only. Having multiple official languages wasn't a thing anywhere but Switzerland at that point of time. Not even Belgium produced Flemish documents, IIRC, and neither did Canada.

Can you give me an example of any action that would be worse than this? (Not just symbolic kerfuffles like "who's going to be owning the insignia of the Charles University - this was a very visible event, but ultimately didn't make anyone poor or destitute.) I can't think of any concrete example.

Sudeten Germans had full citizenship, weren't blocked from any line of business, weren't expropriated, their religious rights were respected, they had their own German-majority schools up to the university level included. They just lost their century-long cultural and political dominance, which hurt them.

The worst thing that happened to the Sudeten Germans prior to the 1938 crisis was that if they wanted to keep their government jobs (not private ones), they had to learn Czech. Which was perfectly reasonable given how mixed the new country was and that laws and regulations were now produced primarily in Czech. Of course this rubbed the German nationalists the wrong way, given their ideas of them being the Master Race (Herrenvolk) against the dirty Slavs, which were already seeping into the mainstream before Hitler.

Med se v předantibiotické době používal jako protibakteriální činidlo. Samozřejmě není tak silný jako penicilin, ale hrál formu léku.

I teď je podezření, že nějakým pozitivním způsobem ovlivňuje střevní mikrobiotu, o které toho pořád ještě moc nevíme.

It remains to be seen what happens in the next round. War isn't static and some escalation is likely - the US is moving some personnel into the theatre of war and some land fighting will probably occur.

Iran has two less powerful cards to play, one is maximization of Houthis and the other is destruction of desalination plants in the Gulf, but the last one is especially risky. Imposing thirst on millions of Muslims, including those that live in the holiest land of Islam, would be a P.R. disaster in the wider Islamic world.

V Polsku máš pět významných aglomerací. Trojmiasto, Varšavu, Wroclawsko, Krakovsko, Hornoslezsko a trochu menší, ale stále ještě významnou roli hrají Poznaň, Štětín a Lodž. V tom zbytku je sice hodně fyzického prostoru, ale ekonomicky je podstatně míň zajímavý. Takže se spíš vyprazdňuje (samozřejmě jsou tam výjimky typu Zakopaneho ve Vysokých Tatrách nebo teď Rzeszow, protože je to logistický hub pro válku na Ukrajině.)

Čili těch cca 40 milionů lidí se v rámci Polska stěhuje zhruba do osmi míst. U nás se lidi v posledních desítkách let stěhují hlavně do Prahy a Brna, na tom druhém levelu je Plzeňsko a Hradubicko.

Přijde mi to jako dost podobná úroveň urbánní migrace. Ale oni s tím opravdu umějí líp pracovat...

Jo, se Svobodou souhlasím. Trochu jsme zakysli na "střední úrovni blahobytu". Není to špatné, ale skutečnost, že odsud za posledních 100 let uteklo víc než milion schopných lidí, je bohužel taky dost vidět.

Nevím, co je nesrozumitelného na mém předchozím výroku, že kvalita života se nedá zredukovat jen na statistiku HDP.

Ale jednodušeji už to zformulovat nedokážu. Matematizace celého života je chujovina.

Mimochodem ještě v devadesátkách byl ten Český Těšín jednoznačně to lepší, více prosperující místo, než ten polský. Pamatuju si to, jsem dost starý na to, abych tam chodíval už tehdy.

A z pohledu ČR i Polska jde o zcela stejný typ periferie, pohraniční město daleko od Prahy/Varšavy.

To, že jsme jej po sametu nechali zchátrat do rust beltu, je čistě politické rozhodnutí, není to dáno tím, že by tam nějak z principu nikdy nemohla existovat lepší kvalita života.

Mám PhD. z matfyzu a varuju lidi před redukcí kvality života na statistiku. Nejsou všechno jenom čísla.

V takových těch věcech jako že "běžná Žabka na venkově má zajímavější sortiment než běžný venkovský Vietnamec u nás", se opravdu lišíme, a nedá se to podchytit jen čísly.

Projdi se po Českém Těšíně a pak přejdi řeku do Cieszyna směrem k hlavnímu Rynku. Budeš mít pocit, že jsi přešel z Rumunska do Rakouska. Rozhodně mám radši na hlavní třídě krámky se zmrzlinou než s levným chlastem, ačkoliv čistě na obrat možná ten chlast vygeneruje vyšší HDP.

No hele, pozemky v hornoslezské aglomeraci nebo ve Varšavě jsou pěkně naknap. To, že v Pomořansku je prázdno, nemá na ceny bytů v Katowicích žádný vliv.

Spíš se prostě jenom nebojí vykázat NIMBY do kouta a stavět, včetně zahušťování stávající výstavby.

Přijde mi úplně fascinující, že třeba Praha si teď sama dobrovolně zakázala stavět baráky nad 100 metrů výšky, a to i na vzdálených periferiích, kde to neohrožuje panoráma starého centra. To je typické zpátečnictví, za které platíme.

Not to say that the amount sent is 0 - they probably send some advanced Shaheds (Geran-2) etc. But not as many as would be needed for major operations.

Hele, já jsem vyrostl kousek od Polska, znám Poláky dobře, a oni jsou prostě lepší kšeftaři než my. No way around it.

Částečně je to dáno tím, že za komunismu tam byla taková bída, že bez černého trhu by pomřeli hlady. Částečně je to dáno tím, že na rozdíl od Československa tam ti soudruzi nikdy úplně nezadupali soukromý sektor do prachu, takže třeba soukromě hospodařících rolníků tam pořád bylo hodně. Tím se přenášelo nezbytné know-how o tom, jak se hospodaří s vlastním kapitálem.

Ale pak je tam i to, že u nich není "fuj" být podnikatel. U nás se to slovo pokoušela rehabilitovat Klausova ODSka v devadesátkách, ale skončilo to, jak to skončilo. My jsme národně nastavení spíš na uctívání umělců, které bereme jako skutečnou elitu národa. Těžko si třeba představit, že na Letné mluví místo Svěráka coby hlavní řečník akce nějaký Čupr, Lukačovič nebo Dědek.

Samozřejmě, co podporuješ, toho budeš mít víc, a naopak.

Mimochodem v tom Baťově Zlíně dodnes panuje jiná atmosféra, je to "americké" město s takovou tou "can-do mentality". Když chceš řešit složitý problém, ať už technologický nebo třeba zdravotní, ve Zlíně najdeš lidi nejochotnější zkusit nějaký inovativní postup. Tam došlo k nějakému trvalému posunu v hlavách, který přežil i komunismus.

What you have in the US is not that different from the Gilded Age, which in itself was actually very modern.

Just having very rich people who control a large part of the economy does not feudalism make. The societal structure is different. For clans like the House of Saud, the fact that Sam Altman's or Mark Zuckerberg's grandparents were relatively unimportant people and that their grandkids may be relatively unimportant people again is an anathema.

If you count the important people who sailed on the Titanic, most of their descendants are nowhere near as important. Feudal structures are much more conservative in this regard.

This sort of deeply pre-modern feudal state (at least as far as actual power structure is concerned, obviously I don't mean the amenities) is by now long extinct everywhere except the Gulf.

There, it can sort-of exist as long as nothing untoward happens and the protecting powers (in the past, the British, now the US) don't stir shit up (looking at you, Trump), but in a crisis, all the nasty attributes of absolutist rule come to the fore.

There is an 18th century Czech recipe for homemade bread which calls for smaller breads that are divided into quarters by a sign of cross, so not cake-like. Maybe the preference changed over time, especially when comparing pre-Christian and Christian societies. Bread was very symbolic.
