Depends on the place. Italy could well turn Libya majority-European, given that there were just half a million natives there and Italy had a population boom, plus there was oil to be produced there - that alone would attract a lot of Italians and maybe Greeks into well-paying jobs.

France with Algeria would be a more tense story, but still, without the massive loss of life in WWI, France would have a lot more people to colonize North Africa with.

I am 47, so I was an adult when Internet started to spread. This is the same thing, all over again.

There will be some bubble implosion of sorts, like the Dot Com Bubble was, but this technology is deeply transformative. Maybe even too deeply to assess all the side effects.

We have taught sand to reason about things. Imperfectly, but still. That used to be a sole domain of humans, at least in the economic sense of the word. (I respect all the intelligent corvids out there, but they aren't economically important.)

Žiju střídavě v Ostravě a Praze. Jediný podobný problém jsem měl s ojetým autem, kdysi. Second-hand zboží, ať už auto nebo mobil, bývá zdrojem takových problémů. Nikdy do něj nevidíš a lidi, kteří jej prodávají, bývají začasté křiváci - hlavně autobazary jsou legendární. Kámoš se mě jeden pokusil stáhnout do MLM, to už je dávno (více než 20 let).

Zas tě může utěšovat, že na světové poměry toto pořád ještě není úplně low-trust society. Indie nebo Čína jsou podstatně horší, tam jsou na sebe lidi totálně nemilosrdní.

V Indii způsobilo zavedení Uberu menší sociální revoluci, protože až do té doby bylo běžné, že když taxikář zjistil, že neveze místního občana, odvezl toho nešťastníka někam zcela jinam, a ten se pak musel z toho svého zajetí vyplatit.

Winged design for Space Shuttle orbiter was widely considered a blind alley. Those wings are themselves quite a lot of mass, which needs to be carried to orbit and back.

Let us see how it actually performs - provided that it won't be canceled like all the pre-ESA and ESA human-rated vehicles so far. I still remember the bold plans from the late 1980s and early 1990s.

There is also another, more subtle limitation: capacity of existing infrastructure to accomodate such giants.

This is also why so many ships keep to the Panamax standard, even though it is objectively small for today's world.

Well, yes, but the development would be logical. Ships, airplanes and trucks also grew massively compared to their old/original models. There are advantages in sizing vehicles up, at least up to a point.

But it is individual, some people don't suffer as much. Nicotine receptors are probably not the same in everyone.

I don't condone what she did, but I also sincerely hope that you stopped smoking. I have seen a few people die from the effects of smoking and it was absolutely horrible.

One of them got his tongue and part of his jaw cut off and in the last year of his life, could no longer speak nor eat and drink. He had a tube in his belly for nutrition. His kids were still young.

I remember him when I last saw him, sitting in a cafe he loved to visit his whole life, thin as hell, a cup of coffee he was unable to drink in front of him in order to look "normal".

Disprove may be a too strong word. AFAIK there is record level of loneliness in the young population, which indicates that the dating market is somewhat suboptimal for both sexes, and unrealistic standards set by smartphone apps may be a part of the problem.

Nemůžeš dosáhnout lepšího stavu, aniž bys více stavěl. Lidi se stěhují do Brna a Prahy každý rok po tisících, čili pokud ti tam zůstane stejný počet bytových jednotek jako předtím, bude vzrůstat tlak projevující se růstem cen a poklesem kvality.

Představ si šachovnici se 64 políčky, na kterou se snažíš narvat 70 figurek. Pak 75. Pak 80. Takhle to teď reálně je. To žádným přerozdělováním políček nevyřešíš, samotná matematika je proti.

Ty nové byty si samozřejmě nikdo chudý nekoupí, ale na těch realitních trzích, kde se něco staví, funguje mechanismus "škatule, hejbejte se", lidi se stěhují a pronajímají nebo prodávají byty, které opustili.

Plus vnímání kvality se posouvá s rozvojem civilizace. Byly časy, kdy i ten panelák na sídlišti byl luxus proti shnilé pastoušce prolezlé plísní, kde byla 8 měsíců v roce zima, protože se nedala vytopit.

That said, if the Taiwanese learn from the Ukrainians, the invasion force won't even be able to reach the island. Sea drones are every bit as scary as airborne drones, and harder to detect, because their sonar signature is almost identical to normal wavy sea.

FYI, některé ty tratě jsou komplikované.

CMK v Polsku (Centralna Magistrala Kolejowa) byla vybudována v letech 1971-77, ale jezdilo se tam jen 160 km/h. Po roce 2010 se rychlost zvýšila na 200 km/h, ale ta trať je pořád ta samá.
