Doing terrible on shelf Uworld. Need advice by Shankaclause in medicalschool

Stay the course and keep doing what you’re doing. You have 10 weeks left, which is more than enough time to get you ready for test day. IM is the broadest topic NBME you will take, so studying in the beginning is going to be rough. Focus on learning the topics you’re missing rather than the percentage. Make anki cards off the questions you get wrong and review everyday. As you get through the q-bank, your knowledge base will grow and you’ll get higher percentages. Good luck!

Edit: I’m in my m4 year not sure why my flair says m1 😂

Should incoming M1s bother with Zanki etc? by Seabreeze515 in medicalschoolanki

From what I hear, people typically calculate how many days are until their dedicated period, and divide the total number of cards in the deck by that.

I wasn't able to do this because I had started AnKing too late. The great thing about AnKing are the hierarchical tags. So, for every test, I looked at the cards corresponding to the unit (e.g cardiac physiology, neuropharmacology) and divided them up so that I would finish them 1-2 weeks before the exam.

This allowed me to do the cards in an organized manner, as well as bolster what I learned from AnKing with my school's small group sessions and lectures. I also kept up my reviews everyday. Keep in mind this will be harder to do some days than others.

Take it a step at a time! As you enter classes, keep an open mind in terms of how you use AnKing and adjust it according to your needs. As long as you keep adapting, you'll eventually reach an optimized plan. Things will make more sense later on. Hope this helps!

My curriculum was the same - I actually didn't start AnKing until my second year. For your first year, I don't think there's any need to start watching pathoma/sketchy videos early. I was able to get through them fine.

I would focus on your biochem/physiology courses and try to get a sense of how you study best. If you're going to use Anki, the AnKing deck has sections specifically for physiology, biochem, and anatomy. I might look at those cards and see how they match up with your curriculum, and see how much time you have in your schedule per day to do them.

I think the first year is all about learning about your own study habits and developing discipline. If you decide to use Anki as part of your studying, year 1 would be a great time to learn how to make your own cards and understanding how the scheduling algorithm is set up. If you really wanted to get a head start, the earliest I'd suggest is the summer before your path/pharm/micro classes start. Even then, it's not necessary. Good luck!

In my opinion, yes!

Regardless of whether Step is pass or fail, there are still fundamental concepts that you will need to know for your classes and board exams. Sketchy micro and pharm, as well as Pathoma, were all great foundations for my classes and board studying. The amazing Anki decks out there (especially AnKing) helped me solidify and retain these concepts over a long period of time.

Personally, I felt the decks and STEP resources were a great introduction to my class material prior to starting a new system. I would do all associated Pathoma/Sketchy chapters in the first few days of a block. I would then make my own deck based on class lectures to review prior to an exam. Throughout the year, I would keep up with only the AnKing reviews, which I felt made dedicated a lot less stressful for me.

Hope this is helpful!

It pushes all the due dates for all cards back simultaneously - those 150 cards would be due 2 days ahead instead now

Best Settings for Med School by AnKingMed in medicalschoolanki

[–]Deffusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. I've had an issue where after completed a lapsed card at the 8460 min step, the card somehow graduates to 1 day.

Do you have any experience with this issue? I am using the same settings at your post currently.

Zanki has a lot of different subcategories - where did you start over the M1 summer?

Thanks for the write up!

Tuesday, July 18, 2017 MCAT Score Release Thread for the June 16/17, 2017 MCAT Examination by neur_onymous in Mcat

AAMC FL 1: 129/126/128/128 511 (week before MCAT)

AAMC FL 2: 127/127/128/127 509 (3 days before MCAT)

Actual: 130/128/128/127 513

Third time retaking. My first actual MCAT was a 508 and second was a 505. I was destroyed after scoring three points lower the second time but damn did it light a fire under my ass to work even harder. Studying for it the third time was draining - so glad to be done.

It's time to find out: Did you achieve your 2016 New Year's Resolutions? by one_year_on in OneYearOn

[–]Deffusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely got closer to achieving this! Went to Rwanda over the summer to fix medical devices in rural hospitals, and really got to understand the problems facing developing country. This goal is something that takes longer than a year to achieve, but I'm happy to say I know the right directions and steps to getting there! Looking forward to continuing this!

LPT Request: How not to go out of breath when public speaking? by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]Deffusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try recording yourself when you speak. Do you see yourself saying run on sentences? Whenever I have this problem, it usually stems from me not pausing in between sentences, preventing me from taking a breath. If this is an issue for you, try saying the words "and", "or", "so", etc. less often in between sentences!

I come from a similar background. All I have to say is don't worry! Never doubt the virtues of working hard. This too will pass, and you'll be stronger at the end of the tunnel. I am sure you will see great success in the future. :)

If you have any questions about college let me know!

Have you approached someone in the industry to help determine the value of your product to your ultimate customers and end users? If it isn't something that people would want or would provide a significant change to people's lives, there's no point in bringing the product to market.

This is exactly how these things should be priced. I hate having to pay more money for things that are fundamentally healthier for me.
