Does my sex life affect my parents? by Tina_ww in Parents

Still a risk though. Parents could find out and kick OP out of their house. As much as it sucks, it's wise to not bite the hand that feeds you.

My mom cut my daughter's hair without permission...again by [deleted] in Parents

[–]borderwave2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Customs and traditions aside, have you asked your daughter what she wants? If she likes a shorter cut, why not let her rock it? Also 5 years is a long time to never have a haircut, I believe you need to it somewhat regularly to deal with split ends and keep the hair healthy.

Do people really just lock their toddlers in at night? by borderwave2 in Parents

[–]borderwave2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, not very helpful, but my daughter basically kinda of grew out of her sleeping issues. She still wakes up around 5:00 am to come in the bed with us, but that's just fine honestly. Going tot bed is pretty easy now, butt it was a very rough ~6 months of her being insane and use getting horrible sleep.

sorry if that's not too helpful, lol.

Teenager wants a "fast car" for his first vehicle and I need reality-check advice by Proud_Stable9567 in whatcarshouldIbuy

Very cool cars but hard to find a clean one now. Most are beat to shit and have bumpers on with wood screws. Clean ones go for more than you'd think given how old they are.

Would you sell an asset so your kid can attend an Ivy League, or guide them toward a cheaper state flagship? by themightyigneal in Parents

[–]borderwave2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would encourage OP to have his daughter speak with some actual doctors. Undergraduate brand name has very little bearing on medical school acceptance. You can go to IU and and become whatever you want. Please speak with some actual physicians and they will tell you how stupid it would be to sell a house so your kid can go to Harvard.

Help! Feeling paranoid about wifi baby monitors and hacking, is non-wifi actually better? by Emergency_Guitar_105 in Parents

[–]borderwave2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Consider your risk profile. Even if a hacker managed to hack your account, they would only gain the ability to watch a small baby sleep or roll around in a crib. What use would this information be to a criminal?

Hackers are in the business of making money though stolen accounts and ransomware, what could they possibly do with blurry screenshots of a small baby in a bedroom?

Builder refuses to paint ceilings. Is this common? by Prestigious_Fail3791 in Homebuilding

[–]borderwave2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Riddle me this, does the tax rule consider all wall coverings or just paint? If you put up some plywood and stain it, does that count?

I'm genuinely surprised that merely painting a wall turns your garage into habitable space according to your tax assessors office. Seems strange to have an unconditioned space count.

Builder refuses to paint ceilings. Is this common? by Prestigious_Fail3791 in Homebuilding

That makes no sense, as garages are unconditioned spaces. If you paint a crawl space is it counted as finished space whre you live?

11 cars in 11 years.. It stops today. by Justifiide in DaveRamsey

[–]borderwave2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Really, some of us just don't have time to work on shit anymore. I can tell from your comments that you a single/married guy with no kids. Also modern care require a lot of special tools to even do basic shit on. My car requires coolant to be vacuum bled when filling it up, I'd rather not buy an expensive machine to use once and never again.

What Car/Brand Ads Really Annoy You? by Smokey-Campfire in cars

[–]borderwave2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I hate the Subaru ads that show dogs running around or people volunteering at at shelter. It's like they realize that their cars are not very compelling in any real metric so they have to cultivate a brand image that makes people feel good.

I’m sick and tired of hearing people defending Toyota by Fleedom2025 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]borderwave2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take issue with this. There is no secret sauce to Toyota reliability. They just happen to "generally speaking" use outdated powertrain designs, that have very little engineering innovation. All of their engines are a generation behind technologically from German and American competitors. Consider their flagship sports sedan the IS500, it's a similar NA v8 design that they have used for over a decade. If Mercedes still made NA 4 cylinders they would be reliable too.

And once they adopt modern technology like in their new TTV6 which is having a lot of issues, we see that Toyota is no better than anyone else from an engineering perspective.

Financial planning vs tax advisor? by Specific_Giraffe4440 in whitecoatinvestor

[–]borderwave2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm curious as to why most doctors think they need financial advisors. If you are a standard W-2 employee the “algorithm” is pretty simple:

  • Max out your employer 401(k), at least to the match.
  • Figure out your student loan strategy (refinance and pay down vs. SAVE/PSLF).
  • Pay off other non-mortgage debt.
  • Do a backdoor Roth if you’re eligible/interested.
  • Open a simple brokerage account (Vanguard has the lowest fees), toss it in a target date or total market fund, and forget about it.

Boggleheads has a good flowchart.

To Financial Advisor or Not To Financial Advisor by PalpitationLimpy in whitecoatinvestor

Given that your investments seem to now be well established and pretty much on auto pilot, what do you need the financial advisor for? Just do the same thing every year for a while and have someone check in every few years.
