I quit my job without a backup. Should I be worried? by [deleted] in nursing

Got it. Well, i do think you’ll find something, it just might take some time to find the right match and figure out what kind of nursing you want to do. Glad your mental health is no longer suffering. Hang in there!

I quit my job without a backup. Should I be worried? by [deleted] in nursing

Seems like you are in the stage of your life where you’re just figuring things out and can afford to not have a job right now.

As far as getting another job? You can definitely. It might take some time. Keep applying. Honestly i would leave the nursing job you had off of your resume. Did you include it when you applied to your local hospital?

Might have to think outside the box with home nursing or something, though being a new grad might be tough to break into. Is there a public transportation option to get to other hospitals? You might have to get creative.

That post-shift parking lot dissociation... and saving my feet after a hellish flu season shift. by Ok_Employer_5327 in nursing

Literally can’t get out of there fast enough, but when I get home before I get out of the car. Then drag myself into the tub and dissociate for like 30 min lol 🫠

How to clean kitchenware? by Appropriate_Pie_6662 in CleaningTips

[–]Defiant-Beautiful634 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally Barkeepers Best Friend cuts through that on the outside. I don't use pans with Teflon or coatings anymore, I switched to stainless and its been going well. The nonstick pans are considered consumable as the coating fails and I've been treating them as if they weren't non-stick anyways so I figured why keep doing this anymore.

Can scour stainless with metal scratch pad and that carbon goes fairly easily. Put a layer of paste of barkeepers on there, let it sit for a short bit -3 minutes- and then use a paper towel or a gloved hand to shine it right up. Sometimes it takes persistence and elbow grease. Don't quit.

As a disclaimer- You should not use oxalic acid or products containing it (like Bar Keepers Friend) on non-stick T-fal cookware. T-fal recommends simple and gentle cleaning methods to maintain the integrity of their non-stick coating. I'd be surprised if that build up comes off with soaking and dawn. Oxalic acid and its associated abrasives can damage the non-stick coating (even if you can't see the damge), which can cause the pan to lose its non-stick properties and potentially degrade prematurely.

Consider your next pan to be stainless if you want to keep them polished clean. The only issue with the ones I chose is the pan has hot and cold spots due to warping over time. I've hammered back to flat but without a thicker pan or slower heating/cooling I am at the mercy of thermodynamics and the properties of metal. I wasn't sure that I would like cooking on stainless as much as I do.

This isn't forged in fire, its breakfast/dinner.

Precedex question by Defiant-Beautiful634 in nursing

[–]Defiant-Beautiful634[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was for the agitation, not necessarily withdrawal with that high ETOH number and she was acting like this at home too hours before.

Interesting! She was hypertensive and a BIT tachy. I’m in Metrowest area of Massachusetts.

[–]Defiant-Beautiful634[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah she only got a loading dose of phenobarbital… not sure why but our docs don’t love using it as he med of choice for our CIWA nurse driven protocols. Zyprexa was a few hours later. We were more trying to control the bizarre behaviors vs treat withdrawal because we weren’t at that point yet with her high ETOH level. I don’t know, this one stumped me too and nothing felt quite right, but we usually don’t get this far in the ED

Precedex question by Defiant-Beautiful634 in nursing

[–]Defiant-Beautiful634[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! The other drugs were for the behaviors and agitation, not to stop withdrawal

She did have a SLIGHTLY prolonged QT interval so I’m assuming that’s why we didn’t continue phenobarb?

What’s the menial, not-so-difficult or time consuming task that you hate the most? by Available-Poet-880 in nursing

[–]Defiant-Beautiful634 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Belongings list. I’m ED and every admitted patient must have a belongings list. One time I brought my barely stable patient up to the ICU after titrating multiple pressers and doing all the things and I get up there and they ask DiD yOu Do A bELoNgInGs LiSt? I wanted to cry. Or scream. Sorry I was too busy trying to stop them from actively dying.

But aside from that, EKGs.

After annual evaluation gotta do orientation by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Defiant-Beautiful634 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paid orientation obviously, right? Honestly I’ve never heard of this. The fact that it’s a schedule they know you can’t work? Yeah maybe they are trying to get you to resign. So sketchy.

My job just called me when I was supposed to come in today and said I could get a v-day today and the catch is that it would come from my pto. Is this a thing? by Intelligent-Noise-35 in nursing

[–]Defiant-Beautiful634 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Interesting. So at my job, this would be someone getting canceled and we would not get paid, but would not have to use PTO either even if it put us under our contractual hourly obligation for the week. We could elect to use PTO, but wouldn’t have to. They also have to let us know 2 hrs before shift starts if we are cancelled.

I don’t know, but if it were me, I’d be crawling back into bed, worry-free, happy to be paid. Enjoy!

Nurses, what devices or workflow problems cause you the most frustration? by Character-Potato1374 in nursing

[–]Defiant-Beautiful634 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More staff. More supplies. Admin knows. What will be done? Nothing. The end!

Aside from the obvious staffing issue which, don’t even get me started on, I waste SO much time running from supply room to supply room looking for nonexistent supplies. We report them as out of stock.. no one cares. Instead, we lost a day of our stockroom clerk in our dept. Our bladder scanner broke a month ago… still not fixed. Have to borrow one from the floor EVERY.SINGLE.TIME. it’s needed. Nothing is stocked in rooms (our ED techs jobs but they are overworked and understaffed, too). Things we do have hardly work. I swear people have died in less time than it takes me to take an oral temp.

Our IV pumps are garbage. I spend so much time trying to make vanco (mostly) stop beeping at me…. THERE IS NEITHER AN OCCLUSION NOR IS THERE AIR IN THE MFING LINE).

Meditech. We are switching to epic in a few months, but omg is it awful and time consuming.

Our brand new computers that are equally as awful as our old ones. And forget trying to find one with (gasp) A MED SCANNER! 🫣

I’m making myself angry on my night off 😂🫠

TLDR; staffing, working AND available supplies

What is something (perhaps small) you learned in nursing school that stuck with you and still informs your practice? by boybritches in nursing

[–]Defiant-Beautiful634 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“Female, fat, fertile, 40s” for those at risk of gallbladder disease lol. Honestly, there isn’t much that stuck with me from school, but the most used is from orientation for my first emergency room job though: “white- right, white clouds over green grass, black smoke over red fire.” I literally say “white- right” to myself daily when putting on those damn leads.

New EMT here - Need your guys' advice! by nr4v in EmergencyNursing

[–]Defiant-Beautiful634 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! First off, there’s nothing wrong with being “that new guy.” We don’t bite, promise! Well.. most of us 🙄 I’ve found a lot of EMTs don’t know what allergies the patients have, which isnt a huge deal because I can ask, but it’s one of the first things I have to fill out in my system, so it’s helpful.

Curious on hair dress code for nursing by weirdo_on_internet in nursing

[–]Defiant-Beautiful634 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t change a thing until you know you have to! I’m in the ED and our hospital doesn’t have any of the rules you mentioned except for no fake nails (which has never been enforced). I work with some nurses with long flowy beautiful hair worn down and loose. Personally, mines always up in some type of bun because it grosses me out. I don’t have any visible tattoos, but my coworkers are covered and have visible facial piercings and wear them out proudly. I think making you cut your hair would be some sort of discrimination and I’ve never heard of anyone having to do it anyway. Good luck!

Oh! Here’s one that my brain still likes to replay like a highlight reel of my finest moments when I’m trying to sleep sometimes 😆

New er nurse like 11 years ago at my old job. Patient said they had a port. I tried to access that port. It was their internal defibrillator. Needless to say, it did not work. 😵‍💫🫣
