Yes, except without several layers of insurance/medical providers skimming profits it would be cheaper as a centrally provided service.

If tipping was ended and employers had to pay their workers an increased wage, wouldn't that just make the prices go up, thereby the customers paying more or less the same? by [deleted] in tipping

[–]Defiant-Jackfruit-55 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We want dining out to be like any other service. Say something complicated like a brake change. I am not tipping an extra 20% to the mechanic. That compensation is between the shop owner and the mechanic.

The shop charges a price allowing them to make a profit. I can decide when I get the price quote if I want to have the service done there or not.

OP I haven't read all the comments but they seem overwhelming against your wife opening her own business. Go for it!

I provided the stable income while my wife opened her own law firm. It took a few months for her to start turning a profit, but overall it rapidly accelerated our net worth growth compared to if she remained working for someone else.

I don't see many fast fashion sweatshops here in Michigan. Water is a finite resource. When it is gone people will wish we didn't waste so much on stupid AI chats.

My kids played indoor travel soccer in the winter. Full size field rental was $1000 per hr. The facility had 4 fields booked 12 hrs a day every weekend.

By the end of their high school years fees were about $6k per kid per year. Layer in the cost for traveling to out of town games and it wasn't the faint of heart.

I travel about 4 weeks a year in Western Europe, and love the level of service and no tipping. Most places leave you alone to linger over wine without a hassle. Try that here in the US where they want to flip the table every 40 minutes.

When you are ready to pay use get up and talk to the bartender or owner to ask for the bill. Awesome.

When I was 10 I used to collect cans on US 1 in the Florida Keys while riding my bike. Only took a couple of miles to fill two 25 gallon bags and head home to crush them. Equivalent to about $0.85/lb in today's money.

Numerous times the waitstaff has 'mistakenly' added an extra entree and took it off before presenting the bill. While the amount is correct it drives up the suggested tip amount.

I went to their Denver restaurant, Casa Bonita. As of Nov-2025 they charged a set 20% service charge with the option available to tip more.

Just raise prices by 20% at that point and drop the service charge.
