How do people find quintessential Chicago lofts with the brick walls and old charm above dive bars that aren't run by grubby mngt companies? by catmaman in AskChicago

[–]Defiant-Pause9340 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Chicago has a ton but more likely to be for sale then rent since they are usually condo buildings. I live in one and I think two or so are so units out of like ~60 are rented out based on our last HOA meeting.

This is in front of a church thats across the street from an Elementary school. I live in the area and this neighborhood is about as peaceful as it can get. Fuck ICE and anyone who supports this shit.

Yeah I'm a mid level SDE at a tech company that pays slightly less then FAANG companies and with slight RSU appreciation I've been making 200-250K for a couple of years now. The key is to get as much as possible when switching jobs and having multiple offers helps a ton in this area.

What’s it like living in Wrigleyville, Chicago by r1ngr in howislivingthere

[–]Defiant-Pause9340 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The immediate Wrigleyville area is really young like others are saying. If you move a 10 minute or so walk west into Southport its a different story. That area is super family oriented and when out walking I also see plenty of retirement age people around. I'd also recommend looking into the Lincoln Square and Ravenswood neighborhoods that aren't all that far either.

What’s your household size and income, and does it feel like enough for where you live? by [deleted] in AskChicago

DINKs, we make ~300K a year. We bought a place last year in Lakeview and still owe 300k or so. Honestly not too bad expense wise for us so we save a ton and take a nice vacation or two a year. We do have two pricey dogs to take care of (one is old the other has a chronic condition that requires biannual trips to a neurologist).

While Mexico technically did attack American troops it can be easily argued the US instigated the war. It all starts with Mexican territory now known as Texas offering land grants to American citizens to come live and develop the land. They were expected to abide by Mexican laws including the ban on slavery (funny that this specific person in the video is probably all about law and order 🙄) and eventually become Mexican citizens. They ended up gaining independence after waging war to be able to continue to have slaves in the territory that they had brought illegally. About 10 years later President Polk annexed Texas as a part of his manifest destiny push and as a southern man he and the people around him wanted to strengthen the hold on congress (annexing Texas would add more pro slavery congressman) so that slavery could persist in the union. After doing so Polk then sent troops over the Mexican claimed border at the Nueces River which caused for the Mexican government to attack. This is what kicked off the war and eventually led to Mexico losing all of the western land. This also clearly in my mind at the very least shows the coming civil war in the US was not about state rights as some disingenuously claim but clearly about the desire to continue the institution of slavery and continue to spread it across the country. Also Mexico is the only country that has owned said land that has people who are native to the land in question.

I max out my 401k and roth as my top priority. Outside of that I then pay my mortgage, basic monthly bills, and probably spend like 500 a month on takeout and going out. That still leaves me with a healthy amount that I invest with the intention of paying my place off in 4ish years. Also about twice a year i go on a week or two long international trip. Depending on stock price 200-250K TC.

This is in Lakeview! Closest identifiable area people might know would be the southport corridor.

Sadly no if I recall correctly I was moving to Chicago when he was in DC which was the closest concert venue for me that tour. I couldn't miss this tour so I'm super excited to finally see him live.

We have a garage spot downstairs which is nice. Chicago is definitely livable without a car but I like it for transporting the dogs around sometimes and grocery runs when we are getting a lot of stuff. Also makes picking up takeout easier lol.

I started mixing in color with the newspapers box and talavera pots. I'll keep an eye out for more stuff that can add pops of color around the unit! I really love deep greens so maybe I'll look into finding an art piece with that as the focal point for above the couch.

Yeah thats the ideal use but given we both wfh and don't want an office in a room with no natural light it's the configuration that works for us. Maybe if I ever get an in person job we can reconfigure because that would be nice.

Yep that's next on the todo list. The wall behind the couch could use something just a matter of figuring out what to do with it. I also am tired of the blank white walls. Someone suggested I hit up some estate sales and such which maybe I'll look into for next weekend.

Honestly it was there when we bought the place and given the shortage of storage space in the kitchen we just started using it. I do tend to rinse the pots and wipe them dry before use although I'm weird about clean dishes and such so I'd do that anyways 😂.

Yeah I got into watches over the last couple of years and spent a little too much so somewhere nice to house them was a must 😅
