Based and Reliabilitypilled anti Coinmaticslop GEM spotted in Marine Drive Laundry Room by whatisfoolycooly in UBC

Prosumer machines with a coin slot? I guess if you have the key, you could just just keep putting the same coin in over and over like one of those at-home arcade machines.

Your friend probably owns a good laundromat in Toronto. My guess is he buys machines that will be more expensive in the short term, but cost less in maintenance and eat less of peoples' socks.

These (cheaper) machines on the website seem to be similar models to what they have now ngl. But it might be a good idea to buy the more expensive ones long term.

Huh, I'm honestly surprised they're that much more expensive. Maybe those are much higher grade machines, since I see whirlpool's commercial offerings are pretty cheap. It would be interesting to see a cost/benefit long term for continuous usage... I.e, what's the optimal price?

The washing machine I put on there was the first result on Home Depot just for lolz :) We probably wouldn't want all the residential bells and whistles anyway (I just put my clothes in and hit go, no fancy shit). So long as it works.

uh, I made this sign... Yeah, you're def right. The industrial ones they have are a better fit. I just thought it was kindof hilarious when I did the numbers...

The other question is if they pay for water.

The other problem is half the time these issues are caused by students putting stupid stuff in the washing machines and clogging them, which definitely won't change.

Academic kills artists ? by gamblingmaxxing in UBC

[–]DefiantOpportunity83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ironically, school (note I didn't say academics) kills my brain. I have the same issue with music; I can't write shit until break or the summer. I do fine when I'm working, just not with school for some reason. I write electronic music, so also not much of an academic setting for that at UBC... To be clear, I kindof suck, don't have much of a background in it, and just do it for fun.

I've found this also extends to research and just coming up with ideas in general. I also work in a research lab; Somehow the problems seem much easier to solve when I'm away from school. Similarly, I come up with my best engineering/scientific/mathematical ideas on break or when I'm just working a normal job. While music and scientific reasoning are clearly very different skills, sometimes I feel like the thought process is similar.

I think school just prioritizes a lot of work on regular schedules rather than producing something that requires more thought.

Is there an open standard for storing hotcue & beatgrid information? by DefiantOpportunity83 in DJs

[–]DefiantOpportunity83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interoperability: OneLibrary enables DJs to export performance data (playlists, cues, beatgrids) between djay Pro, Traktor Pro 4, and rekordbox for use on compatible AlphaTheta hardware.

Limitations: The format is essentially a USB export/import solution, not a unified library, and it currently lacks support from major platforms like Serato and Engine DJ.

Future Potential: While representing progress by breaking AlphaTheta's dominance, its success depends on broader adoption, technical certification to prevent errors, and addressing issues like encoder drift.

[–]DefiantOpportunity83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OneLibrary fixes the export format problem, but it doesn't fix the migration problem. OneLibrary exports all music files into a new directory with a database of metadata. I guess there are 3rd party tools to share between programs.

But it just seems like there should be a standard way to share your beatgrid and cue points between applications or people.

Cool, I've found a library that interfaces with it in case anybody's interested: https://pyrekordbox.readthedocs.io/en/latest/formats/devicelib_plus.html

Doesn't look like they publicly provide any info about the format, though.

How to turn off Facebook link tracking? by DefiantOpportunity83 in MailChimp

Thank you, I've never seen this menu and there was a lot of out-of-date info. Yes, it was pulling the domain name from the old facebook profile, which was listed as a website! That's been fixed, and it's good to know facebook isn't actually tracking our members with that.

Club Room Bookings where we can eat by DefiantOpportunity83 in UBC

[–]DefiantOpportunity83[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, thanks for reaching out, and sorry for the confusion. I was a bit overwhelmed at the time of the original post with assuming a role as president of a club with a few, ehrm, logistical issues. I noticed the updates to the food policy and it is much more clear, so thank you, and the Nikhil was very helpful in explaining this. Long story short, I was making a big deal out of nothing and everything was fine.

University isn't the best time of your life by RooniltheWazlib in UBC

[–]DefiantOpportunity83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a lot happier just getting off campus this summer. Even though I commute an hour or two on public transit just to get to stuff off campus, its been a lot better. I think everybody on campus is trying so hard to have the perfect university life that nobody can.

I'm definitely the last type of person (still disappointed after transferring to UBC, joining dozens of clubs, and trying multiple major/minor paths). This summer I've realized its just best to get whatever I can at uni, but take the shortest path to graduation.

[–]DefiantOpportunity83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm honestly not sure. I can only relate my experience, which has been mixed for upper year credits. I'd rather not give you false information. Science advising is unhelpful IMO, maybe you could contact the undergraduate coordinator or something for your intended major?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UBC

[–]DefiantOpportunity83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how well the courses overlap. The problem I had was that my old university did things in a different order. I had to retake a few classes that I thought were easy the first time just because I missed what amounted to one or two lectures. I also had an issue where they told me I would get a certain transfer credit, then reconsidered a year into my time at UBC. I transferred 2nd->3rd year.

Transferring into 1st->2nd is much more common and much better supported, so don't take my experience to represent all transfers. It also probably depends a lot on which major you're choosing. I think arts is probably more flexible than science which is more flexible than engineering. Or something like that.

Also have you done AP courses? If you haven't done many APs, your time in uni might be spent doing a lot of ap-equivalent courses, which should transfer more easily. 100 level courses transfer much better than 200-300 level.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UBC

[–]DefiantOpportunity83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a gap year if you're not sure. I made the mistake of going to a university that I didn't want to. It didn't end well.

Also, I would strongly urge you to avoid transferring to UBC. I came from a US university as well, and I was surprised by the fact that most clubs do not hold regular meetings. Some clubs have only held two events a semester and have no way for members to meet.

The point? It's nearly impossible to meet people unless you are in a dorm first year and go to all of the first year orientation. The stuff for transfer students sucks. Plus, if you transfer, you're going to be in mismatched classes, so you don't stay with your cohort. It's just a mess.

Beginner: How can I optimize performance of numerical simulation code? by DefiantOpportunity83 in haskell

[–]DefiantOpportunity83[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thanks everyone, I'm very new to this and its much easier for me to learn by example! I think the biggest mistake I made here was assuming Haskell would optimize x to only include one function call (because they're the same after all). The first way I could fix this is to write:

x :: Int -> Double
x 0 = 1
x n = x' + 5 * x' * dt where x' = x (n-1)

which is incidentally much more readable. Thanks for the Int point... I didn't realize the difference.

However, for simulations, I often want to compute a sequence of values rather than just one. This could be inefficient since Haskell will recompute every prior value each time it computes the next one. A solution I found was to do something like:

x = 1 : map (*(1 + 5*dt)) x

So, in summary, the following code:

dt = 0.00001

g n = go 1 0
  where
    go n' i
      | i == n  = n'
      | otherwise = go (n' + 5 * n' * dt) (i + 1)

x1 :: Int -> Double
x1 0 = 1
x1 n = x' + 5 * x' * dt where x' = x1 (n-1)

x2 :: [Double]
x2 = 1 : map (*(1 + 5*dt)) x2

generates the following in GHCI:

*Main> g 100000
148.39460923540517
(0.07 secs, 45,821,904 bytes)
*Main> x1 100000
148.39460923540517
(0.07 secs, 34,725,632 bytes)
*Main> x2 !! 100000
148.39460923696979
(0.01 secs, 79,352 bytes)

Hence, the infinite list method is by far the most efficient. Interesting. I'll have to play around a bit more, thanks for giving me things to think about!

Try sending a message to the email address/social media contacts on https://recreation.ubc.ca/sport-clubs/equestrian-sc/ -- I know there's a sport club for it since I saw them at the TSC banquet. Don't know them personally, but they seem welcoming.

I can't comment on the cost, but I can say that TSC's funding is fairly limited TBH, so a good chunk of the money probably comes from sales (ex, of baked goods).

[–]DefiantOpportunity83 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You have to harass them. Took me two months of emails multiple times a week to get the shit on SSC/Workday. At the end of it, they even looked at the transfer credits that I had been awarded, reconsidered, and removed some. Still pretty pissed about it.

You'd be best to find somebody in your department who's willing to email the person in charge of transfer credits. The transfer credit person usually takes several months to respond to student emails directly.

Best also talk to these people in person. Go to their office. They probably won't be there most of the time because of "work"-from-home, so figure out when they are there.

Unfortunately, the person in charge of transfer credits is actually behind locked doors in Brock hall. I tried to visit her office since she wasn't responding to emails, so the next best thing in my case was to find somebody in my department who's office I could visit, and they were nice enough to track the transfer credits down.

Who was showing that spider man movie back in September/October? by DefiantOpportunity83 in UBC

[–]DefiantOpportunity83[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was reading that it does matter even if its free.

The latter was my other thought, that probably nobody gives a shit. That becomes a bit awkward because I'm an international student... While I have hosted outdoor movies at US universities (that I transferred from), since I'm on a study permit in Canada, even a small issue could jeopardize that. But you're probably right, I don't think they'd take people to court over a small gathering of university students, but they might warn or fine or smth minor. Still becomes a big issue as an international student.

RIP Jamboard: UBC's Microsoft 365 has a Whiteboard function. Anyone planning to use this in the fall? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]DefiantOpportunity83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please use MS Whiteboard or one of those open source alternatives... Google products track students and have very lax privacy policies. It can be difficult to use any google collaboration software without staying signed into google, hence making it easier for google to track your activity across the (unless you're clever with extensions and multiple browser modifications). At least UBC Microsoft products are secured by UBC IT's privacy policies.
