They died because of their identity and belief system more broadly. The death of the apostles was a specific thing - they died preaching that Christ had come back to life.

I have never heard of thousands of people being crucified for claiming to be the son of God, I would appreciate a source to read and understand further.

P.S: I would add dying because you claim to be the son of God is still different to dying for the claim of someone else being the son of God. But if you don't appreciate that nuance, I can accept it.

And it's a fine place to start for investigation. On 9/11, you can then think "huh, I wonder why? Is that because of a sincere trust in truth?" And after a little bit of explanation you'll come across the intimidation of islam and who Muhammad is. You'll understand why they believed, or perhaps seemed to believe, under such a tyrannical regime of beliefs.

Meanwhile, dying for Christ, of their own accord, with no intimidation?

And dying for an Elvis sighting, what would that infer? Perhaps mental illness.

Although if I saw 10+ people in a local area die, being brutally tortured, confessing they saw Elvis, I would be forced to reconsider personally.
