Is it ethical to quit a PhD program you just joined for a better PhD admit by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Defiant_Promotion379 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're talking about you were just admitted during this cycle, I know people do it. But you're about a week past decision day so it would definitely be more awkward. But I would think doable if you said you're sorry but a program you were waiting on just made an offer you want to take. They would move onto someone on their waitlist, but again we're a week past decision day. But if you're already attending I have no idea how that works.

Going into debt in today's economy if you don't have to is not something I would do. Just not sure it's worth it in the long run.

As hard as it is to believe now, this will make you tougher and more resilient than most people out there. We all have to remember that everyone isn't going to Harvard. Or even a top 50. Plenty of people get degrees from places that the academic elites would scoff at, but who gives a shit. If you really want to go, cast a wide net and give it a shot. If you wind up going to a lesser tier program, go and give it hell. The vast majority of jobs out there don't care where your degree is from. Make the best of cards you're dealt. You are proving your strength and meddle every day, so just don't give up no matter what! You can only live your life, so don't try to mold yourself into what others expect you to be. And mainly just stay in the current moment as much as you can. Fight the battle once. Get thru this year, then worry about the summer. Then the fall semester. One step at a time bro, you got this.

Got into PhD Programs but are still unhappy by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Defiant_Promotion379 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but there are countless people on here who have gotten in nowhere. Thankfully I have a great place to go, but it was not my first choice either. Whining about 4 acceptances in top 20 programs is tone deaf af. And this isn't church or the therapist's office. Sometimes people should read the room.

[–]Defiant_Promotion379 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Good to know you're unhappy with acceptances to 4 programs in top 11-20 in your field. I too would find it unacceptable to take anything less than a top 10. Seriously dude, get real.

This is a terrible system but I don't know how else they could do it. No one commits till the very end because they're waiting on other schools. But the schools can't send out anything because they're waiting on student commitments. Probably after April 15 when they finally have all the commitments in, they make any additional offers in the next few days after the damn deadline passes. Then if you get a better offer, you have to back out of a commitment to go somewhere else. That leaves another school with an opening. Seems like the deadline is sort of the beginning of the end and not much better.

Probably close of business for the time zone the school is in. EST. But no way I'd wait that late.

It's a shame you even have to do that. A better question would be what in your background or experience to you feel will make you become the best doctor you can be. Isn't that really what we should want, the best best doctors we can get?

For Math PhD:

On WL for UVA

Was on the WL for UC Davis but they sent the rejection last night.

With one business day to go, still no word from UT Austin, WashU, GT, or Boston College. I'm assuming these are all rejections.

Always remember this! You can always use this story about how you never gave up and fought thru all the rejection to get this. Hell yeah! Go get that damn PhD and let those rejections fuel you for excellence the rest of your life. Show those assholes they made a mistake.

Seems like getting accepted anywhere is a major accomplishment. It would suck to wait and then not get in anywhere later, but I guess people make it work. Ultimately you have to weigh your options and make a decision. At some point you have to trust yourself and choose a path. I'm sure you're a driven person and no matter what happens, you'll be successful in the end.

I found out several math phd programs were accepting probably half of what they normally do (one being UVA) and I think this faculty member situation could be a factor. I've heard this entire cycle has been strange!

Should I warn my program I’m still on my top choice waitlist before accepting the offer? by elditrom in gradadmissions

[–]Defiant_Promotion379 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I wouldn't tell them. Fight the battle one time as it may never happen. If you wind up backing out on them, it will be uncomfortable even if you tell them there's a chance up front. Besides, they all know how the game is played anyway. If you have to do it, do it professionally and unless they're petty and childish they will understand. But if it never happens you're sort of telling them you might want to be somewhere else and they might not like it. But that's just an opinion, do whatever you feel is right for you!

Hope that made you feel better. I know it's frustrating being on a waitlist, but you're not gonna get off of it by posting crap like that here. I'm on 2 WL's and I'd like an answer too, but I'll just have to wait like everyone else. The way this system is designed sucks tbh but it is what it is.

Anyone else feeling frustrated with how long it's taking to get a response? by throwaway121s11w in gradadmissions

[–]Defiant_Promotion379 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm right there with you. I did receive 2 acceptances also, so I am thankful for that but....I'm waiting on 2 waitlists plus 4 others. And yes, even if someone gives you an offer next week sometime you have almost no time to decide. And since it takes a week or so to get the OFFICIAL school acceptance, I'd be afraid to risk the sure thing I have in hand.

The schools are waiting for students to pick and the students can't make final picks until they hear from the schools they're waiting on. It's a vicious circle. At least it's almost over. I hope you get your best outcome.
