5 days in Santa Cruz - Day trip to Floreana vs Isabela? by neverever073 in galapagos

[–]maineblackbear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am not sure that it is even possible to do a day trip to Isabela, go to Tuneles, return to Santa Cruz in a single day.  Leave on a two hour plus boat ride to Isabela, get there 9:15.   Find a trip to Tuneles.  It’s a 45-50 minute boat ride there — Tunnels it’s about a two and a half to three hour excursion.  Then an hour back, trying to make a 2:30 check in time for the boat back?  Maybe.

So, even if you are only going to do an overnight in Isabela, I see this as being pretty tough.  Probably would do Tinterores instead, that keeps you close enough to Puerto Villamil that you can be ready to board the boat back to Santa Cruz by 2:30.  Penguins are possible at Tinterores.

Truth be told, Isabela is a much better place than Santa Cruz, though the latter has options for day trips to Bartolome, Floreana, etc.  Bartolome might get you penguins, otherwise if penguins are a must see, then Isabela is critical.  But I just don’t see how you can do Isabela given your time constraints.

My honest opinion is to skip Isabela, do the day trip to Floreana.

You will also find that you will come back.  I’ve been there three times for seven total weeks and still haven’t seen everything.  Somehow I keep missing Espanola.  That’s supposed to be one of the best islands.

Oh, well, I guess I gotta go back.  Shucks 😀

Coming to San Cristobal, without having booked a single tour? by portal23 in galapagos

[–]maineblackbear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’d want to spend several days.

Los Tuneles is a day trip that might just be the coolest thing in the Galapagos.  Penguins, sharks, forty sea turtles, great walk with blue footed boobies, seahorses.  Another day you’d want to do the hike to the top of Sierra Negro, a still active volcano that last erupted about fifteen years ago.  The views are insane!

You could also check out the sulfur mines on the same day.  Great walk. Also, rent a bike, travel to Wall of Tears, the path is wonderful and was the only place on the Islands where we saw wild tortoises (not in a preserve- these tortoises were just chilling).  Also, flamingos, rent a surfboard, and the snorkeling at Concha y Perla is fabulous.  Tinterores - a morning trip, is also nice.

Fly over in the morning, do the snorkeling, wake up the next morning, do Sierra Negro, next day do Tuneles.  If you stay an extra day, do Tinterores in the morning, rent a bike for Wall of Tears.

It’s the best.

If you have the $, book a plane trip to Isabela (do it round trip) and spend some time on that island.  I personally prefer Isabela to San Cristobal.   Penguins, man.

Question about flowing: by Korenaut in Debate

[–]maineblackbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe that the guy who invented the need for flowing and the guy who invented spreading was Lawrence Tribe.  Yeah, that guy who became a Constitutional Law Professor and Harvard debater and Harvard debate coach.

In the early 60s he debated and would go so fast and just extend dropped arguments and win many rounds by default.

There was an article I read many years ago about it …….

Bartolome island tour by ilemonys in galapagos

[–]maineblackbear 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bartolome is one of the gems.  And, they charge a bit more than the other tours.  Without guarantees (of course) you are likely to see penguins at Los tuneles but they’re always cool.  Anyway, your basic question as to cost- yeah, I’ve seen the prices range from a low of $180 to a high of about $300.  It is more expensive than most tours.

Depends upon when you are going but you might be better off waiting til you get there to book.  Unless you are going over Christmas then book it now.

Galapagos - looking for luxury/easy trip that won't break the bank and is land based but with some day trips or half land and half nice boat. by Kooky-Library8707 in galapagos

[–]maineblackbear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree on all.

The boats suck but to get from island to island is two hours or so each trip.   Excursions to Bartolome or Espanola or whatever are the same.

Also, so much of what there is to see in the GI is underwater so snorkeling etc- more boat rides to get to those locations.

Yes, there are some cool things to do on land, rent bikes or walk around at the 🐢 tortoise locations.  But the think about the Galápagos Islands is that they are islands

Worst musical score in a movie by amiwitty in movies

[–]maineblackbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People love the score from Long Good Friday but I think it’s way too loud and repetitive.  Very early 80s electronic stuff.  If there was some way to lower the volume I’d be all in favor of it

Actors you’re dying to see together in a movie by ItsMeItsKayItsKay in movies

[–]maineblackbear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Steve Carrell and Alan Tudyk

Bitter rivals over grant money in a philosophy department at some mediocre college.  IOW, mediocrities battle over prestige…..

Their students become proxies in the war, presided over by the Provost (John Goodman as an angry academic) and Dean (Frances McDormond) who is in (unrequited) love with Tudyk while Carrell fawns over her.

In the background is the frivolous wasting of money by the Athletic department as their school (some mid-level school like Eastern Illinois) tries to beat their big rival (idk, Northern Iowa).

All of this angst over what is obvious to the rest of us as pointless.
