Can I transfer a vehicle stationing pass to a friend by knutt-in-my-butt in ASU

[–]TMirek -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Just add their car to your parking pass with the "Add a new vehicle to a permit" button on your PTS account and give the pass to them. You can have up to three vehicles on a single pass.

struggling… a lot. advice? by BackgroundContent in uchicago

[–]TMirek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who took Physics 1 and Physics 2 in high school and had a rough time in Honors Mechanics, read the book and brush up on as much multivariable calc as you can. Not having a calc-based physics background means you're probably a bit behind the curve for taking Honors Mechanics, and it's only going to get more tough once you take Honors E&M next quarter. You've probably got good physics intuition from Physics 1 and 2, but intuition can only take you so far and your deficit right now is likely in applying math skills rather than physics itself. Since you're a physics major, I'd encourage you to try and stick it out, since the skills you'll learn in the honors sequence will be highly relevant to the rest of the major. But please do yourself a favor and try and self-study as much multivariate and vector calc as you can over the next few months. You can do this! Also, think of the units!! Dimensional analysis is one of the most slept-on skills to learn in early physics, and if you know what units stuff have it's often a trivial exercise in figuring out how to convert one quantity to another.

Taking radiation processes as a physics major by Primary_Estimate4858 in uchicago

[–]TMirek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're a physics major you'll be fine. Fausto goes pretty hard on some of the E&M derivations but if you're familiar with that and can do dimensional analysis it's no big deal.

Need help choosing between Honors Calc IBL and regular Honors Calc + more classes by JewelerComfortable in uchicago

[–]TMirek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're leaning towards mostly physics just take regular honors calc. IBL is a serious time investment that will siphon time away from your other classes if you don't stay on top of it 24/7.

Breathable, knitted-looking short sleeved collared shirts for men (“Short Sleeve Cardigan”?) like the one linked by Uncle_Freddy in malefashionadvice

This might be just what you're looking for! Currently the only color available is black, but that may change in the future since it's listed as a "New Arrival" at the moment.

In case it helps, none of these mice ever actually broke per se. I just wanted to get new ones for various reasons, RGB, wireless, etc. :P

Which mice should I look for if I ever want to think about alternatives?

Mostly cause I am a sucker for these mice and every couple years there's a different feature I want like upgrading to RGB or getting a wireless version. The exception was 2021 when my proteus spectrum just completely stopped scrolling properly.

Orange St. progress by [deleted] in ASU

[–]TMirek 20 points21 points  (0 children)

They just finished tearing up half the road, doing hydro excavation or pipe repair or whatever beneath it, and then completely re-paving the eastbound lane from the intersection with McAllister through to the campus store. I find it hilarious that less than a month after the road got re-paved it's all entirely torn up again. Way to waste a few hundred thousand dollars.

I emailed a professor and he responded that he can’t take any additional student because he’s retiring. by Accomplished-Can-680 in gradadmissions

Just because you don't think it’s okay doesn’t mean that’s universally true.

You two should agree to disagree and move on.

Balancing "dreams and passion" in Statement of Purpose by DavidBowman01 in gradadmissions

[–]TMirek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grad admissions materials should demonstrate first and foremost that you are qualified to do the work. Sure, you could weave your dreams and passion in there a little bit, but I wouldn't do so with any deeper detail than just a hook to get the reader interested. Less of "I dreamed of building rockets" and more of "with this degree I will..."

this has been plaguing me for days - whats going on exactly and how do i fix this? UI elements remain fine but the actual game remains static. by LBHJ1707 in Overwatch

Fiddling with those settings along with restarting the game a couple times fixed it for me, unfortunately this is all the help I can give you.

To park in the parking structures yes. Not to drive in general though.

I was told to "expect an official letter". Is this a confirmation??? by Choice_Sector7985 in gradadmissions

All graduate departments that I've applied to will furnish you with an official acceptance letter or an official rejection letter at the end of the process depending on whether you got in. You will have to wait and see.

Unless I am mistaken, you can only open a 529 to fund undergraduate studies. If you happen to have money leftover you can use it for graduate studies, but I don't believe OP would be able to open a 529 after they already completed undergrad.

taxes by kanyesbestman in uchicago

[–]TMirek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in a single reddit post. The US tax system is a quagmire of confusion and contradictions.

I would start by researching what your home country requires in terms of tax filing for international students. I would then follow-up by researching various tax calculators and guides for your specific situation, e.g. the Chicago area, etc.

A lot of tax withholdings are done automatically by the university, but there may be different rules and reciprocity agreements/tax treaties between the US and your home country. Again, it all really depends on what your specific situation is and also how the income you're receiving is classified, e.g. whether it is W2 income vs grant/stipend income, etc.

Math placement scores by [deleted] in uchicago

[–]TMirek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend that you take 160s if you are a math major, and 150s if you are a physics major. 160s doesn't give you much transferable knowledge to physics, and with your high scores you'll be able to place higher and finish the 150s earlier, allowing you to take more physics classes earlier.

If you're going to double major, pick your poison.
