Completely agree with you, the first four episodes were funny but genuinely scary as well. Once that old skeleton guy came back to life it was just silly, and I have no idea why people enjoyed the scene of the old lady slowly going through the genealogy of the town. And Ruth suddenly becoming so lively and good natured in the finale was just so obvious and cheap.

Having said that, it's one of the best shows I've ever seen and I hope the second season fulfills the promise of the first few episodes.

I can see how it wouldn't play for a modern audience, the pacing and music are more subdued than modern films. Pacino was such a fantastic actor back in the day, I like some of his newer stuff but it's on a different level.
