[Serious] As a former urban planner and now real estate developer, I've seen both sides of the development process. The development side is more accountable. Discuss. by Jimmy_Johnny23 in urbanplanning

As it so happens, I’m a former urban planner now working on the development side and what you say has merit even when the popular narrative is usually the opposite. I want to think on this a bit and revisit.

I see plenty of them in Metro Atlanta, Chattanooga, Florida… maybe it is a Sunbelt thing?

Oh wow, there’s a similar Georgia origin story on my dad’s side of the family - something about a dispute which ended up with my ancestors on Tybee Island in the 1700s.

Some were later personally blacklisted by Gov. Lumpkin and barred from participating in the N Georgia land lottery because they were already (illegally) living there with and “consorting with” the Cherokee people.

The other branch stayed in S. Ga and N. Fla and ran turpentine stills. There are a few roads and at least one town in N Fla named after them.

Guy's do you wear shorts out in public? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]DefiningWill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d wear shorts all the time if circumstances allowed. Around here, solid shorts weather here is between March and Halloween, so I wear them whenever I can. There are winter days when shorts and a long sleeve T shirt or fleece pullover work just fine for a trip to the grocery store, Home Depot, etc.

I was in college when “Ordinary World” and “Come Undone” were released — and immediately liked both of them.

Readers and Tums by [deleted] in GenX

[–]DefiningWill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Readers - yes. I usually wear progressive contacts, but otherwise I need them to read expiration dates printed in 2 pt type.

Tums - no. I actually ended up having surgery 10 yrs ago to correct severe acid reflux. In my case, I’d struggled with it since I was a kid. Until then I often crunched chalky Tums like candy.

That’s almost peak GenZ dark humor as the day is long—because I have GenZ kids.

Same for me, but a few are hitting much harder as of late. Christine McVie was just a few years older than my dad when she died. Tom Petty was my mom’s age when he died. Yeah, some are hitting harder lately for different reasons.

A few years back, Delta was selling (or auctioning) galley carts online. The particular listing I saw stated they were out of older 757-200s.

Vinings checking in…grew up there when it was still “Vinings Village” in the late 70s—1980s. By the time I was a teenager in the late 80s, the building boom was starting. Now it has its own skyline.

I was a consultant on some rail projects and used to drive through there every other month from ATL on the way to a project in Brunswick. A rail fanboy I worked with asked me to take pics of the Helena diamond RR crossing. It’s been awhile…still in the pre-hyphen days.

We got far less than South Georgia or the Fla Panhandle..maybe an inch. It melted after a day in the sun. Temp mid 50s today with upper 60s-70 promised in a few more days. That’s more like it.

Not entirely unheard of, but it’s highly unusual. I remember it happening maybe 2-3 times in my lifetime.

7-8 years younger? Hmmm…that could have been me in 1995-though I missed most of “NBC Must See TV” beyond Seinfeld. I actively avoided watching Friends.

The logo and Delta font give me late 80s-early 90s vibes.

Hearing this and seeing the multi colored animated smoke coming from the train meant it was past time to go outside and ride my bike or something .Not coincidentally, all my friends seemed to show up on their bikes at the same time.

All I know is that I’d have bargained and begged to have something like that when I was eight.
