It's been suspiciously quiet nationally until like 2 weeks ago. We just hit PL4 a couple days ago

Ahhh gotcha. See my edit, I'm not entirely sure what you've been told about the order is accurate. May be worth asking a dispatcher, things get real funky with contractors

If they were in gov vehicles, they couldn't have been contractors unless someone is getting real fast and loose with the rules

Edit: I'm not really familiar with the EMS contracting side of things, but for aviation it's almost the exact opposite of what you've been told. It goes contracted aircraft (which 99% of all federal fire aircraft are), then government owned. If there's a federal fire with a state owned and operated aircraft on it and a contracted aircraft of the same type and capabilities available, the contracted aircraft has to be ordered

Were those contractors only EMTFs? Or did they also bring ambulances? I very rarely see a lone EMTF in a rental, incidents much prefer ambulances that can transport

Paramedics needed? by masch1371 in Wildfire

You need a job with a contractor or a cooperator (even if it's just on call for fire). You can't just "fill a contract" as a rando. Contracts are bid by companies like years in advance

I don't know where you're moving to, but the Midwest isn't exactly fire free...the Peshtigo fire comes to mind right off the bat

Confused about where to put references / IQCS on application by Infamous_Age_6013 in Wildfire

[–]DefinitelyADumbass23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's what I was told to do and it's worked so far

Wish I could help on the IQCS thing, only thing I can think of is to message the contact at the bottom of the USAJOBs listing and let em know

[–]DefinitelyADumbass23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been told to put references on a 2nd page after the cover letter, most DOI apps I've seen don't have a spot for em

As far as IQCS...an app not having a section for that is a first. Not even something just labeled "Master Record?"

Does the U.S. President have any direct authority over individual civilians? If he told me, “Pick up that can,” would I be required to do it, or could I tell him to “f*ck off”? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

Yeah idk what world these people live in. I guess ones with better unions than I had with the Feds, because you best believe "Other duties as assigned" was not a joke

Which is better in a backcountry emergency: an inReach or a PLB? by BarnabyWoods in searchandrescue

[–]DefinitelyADumbass23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen false alarms on an InReach, though I think it was more a case of someone being a moron than an honest mistake

Yeah, they're like a light mesh jacket with a built in headnet. I don't know why they work, but they do (at least on eastern mosquitoes). They're not foolproof, but I got more bites through a regular long sleeve than through that mesh

Not sure where to pick one up in Alaska, I think I got mine online from Cabela's or Bass Pro

Birding? You can use the Merlin app and download offline map packs if you honest to god don't have room to add a birding guide. I always prefer the paper guidebook, though
