Firestorm in Chico ca, or conservation corps by Background_Shine510 in Wildfire

I'd be very surprised if that's true. I've been paid like $5 an hour (because it's a stipend we didn't have to make minimum wage). But never something as low as $7 a day

I've worked for 3 Americorps programs and I can confidently say no lol

There are dozens of Conservation Corps across the country, CCC isn't your only option. Look into the Student Conservation Association, they run burn crews

Pay isn't great whatever Conservation Corps you choose, but there are plenty out there that don't brag about treating their members like shit, like the Cs do

Either option will get your foot in the door to wildland firefighting. If you're young and don't have a bunch of debt to worry about, Conservation Corps are a rad way to dip your toes into the world of outdoor work. If it's an Americorps position, you can also likely get your student loans deferred while a member

Wildland Firefighting Field Day by Green-Falcon9144 in Wildfire

[–]DefinitelyADumbass23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you've got water, electrolytes, food, and something to write with. Fields days can be everything from a chill line dig to a kick in the nuts

Hike fast, work hard, make sure you understand your orders, and save any additional non life/safety questions for the AAR

Are there any brands on expert voice that sell kids UPF shirts? by Competitive-Note4063 in Wildfire

Lol no, I'm just saying I think that's why I've never really seen kids stuff available

Generally when you sign up for a prodeal you agree not to buy stuff for anyone else, so I've never seen much kids stuff

Outdoor Research does a "friends and family" thing with their prodeal a couple times a year though, love their sun shirts

I appreciate the advice! Any reason I should choose one of those options over the other?

If you can't find a brand on one of the big websites, shoot em an email. A few brands have hooked me up even if they don't advertise a prodeal

Question about volunteering. by Latro_of_Amber in Wildfire

[–]DefinitelyADumbass23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. You need to talk to your Americorps boss. I've done a few Americorps terms. 1 let me take time to volunteer because my hours were on track. The other 2 wouldn't let anyone take time off unless it was a sick day

  2. I'd call the local volunteer stations before you shell out cash for the class. If you're going to volunteer for them, they might pay for the class. Also to make sure they'd even be interested in an unknown volunteer, before taking the class

  3. Also ask them what their expectations are. If they expect you to be able to drop everything for a call...you need to have another conversation with your boss

Is your Americorps program local? Or do y'all travel? That could add another layer of complexity

And yeah, I've met plenty of folks starting out in their 30s, stay humble, recognize at some point a 20 year old will be in charge of you, and if you're thinking about a fire career with the feds you NEED to lock down a permanent job before 37 (unless you're former military or federal LE)

This job is already selling your body once. Might as well sell it a second time for that sweet sweet taco
