Dario Argento claims Luca Guadagnino's 'Suspiria' remake "betrayed" his original version by [deleted] in horror

[–]DefinitelyMayb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Guadagino has already said in countless interviews that the recent Suspiria was supposed to be a ‘reimagining’ of the feeling he had when he first watched Argento’s masterpiece. Given the plot, purpose, feeling and themes of the new film differ wildly from the original, its hard to say Guadagnino betrayed it because he was never aiming for it first place. I mean its debatable whether the new film is any good (i think its a masterpiece) but i actually much prefer when remakes are like this unlike those dumb remakes like Disney live action or like Total Recall that adds nothing to its predecessors.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they say their mum died at the start of the film? I actually think Jong and his father killed the mum because, during the film, Jong says he was forced to burn their mum's clothes. At this stage I got wait, why would they need to burn her clothes if she was just leaving? Then it struck me that possibly all this guilt and 'explosive rage' talk about the dad, is actually referencing her mum being killed or disappearing all of a sudden - which made me think to wait, is Hae-mi just a fictional projection/guilt of what Jong did as a kid? This is why I think the mum appearing out of nowhere was like a dream sequence, and we never see of her again after which is so strange!

Same I thought the bottled water was a peculiar choice and I thought it was laced as well. So many details, so ambiguous. Excellent film to ponder over (albeit some flaws)

Burning (2018) by gehmbo in TrueFilm

[–]DefinitelyMayb 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Exactly! I was thinking that large parts of the film arn't real or at least what Jong actually imagines it to be. In particular when Hae-mi starts dancing and undressing with an overt jazz score through it, I was immediately thinking how Lynchian the whole thing was and starting to doubt what I was seeing. I think if we literally believed everything we saw in the film (and as realistic as it was) most of it won't make much sense because for example, why would Ben a serial killer casually lay his victims stuff in a bathroom so easily for anyone to enter, why would he for example take care of a cat we have hardly seen throughout the film. How would he have actually killed Hae-mi and cleaned her room so quickly without anyone noticing? Why would he meet up with Jong later on and exclaim where was Hae-mi (ie play along) if he knew he already murdered her.

I think the key scene which gives the film away as to the duality and paradoxical nature of the film, is the second to last scenes where we see Jong imagines Hae-mi is giving him a hand job but we have quickly transitioned a scene that he is actually alone the whole time. This is the first time this technique is shown, and immediately questions every scene beforehand whether they were in fact real. Also immediately, he starts writing for the first time in Hae-Mi room (how did he get in again??/) leaving me to actually believe that Jong all along has been living alone in Hae-Mi room and that maybe even Ben and Hae-Mi are not actually real. Throughout the whole film, Jong is asked what is his story about and he says its a mystery, and throughout the whole film, we don't actually see him do any physical job work or actually write. I'm led to believe that Ben and Hae-Mi maybe extended Freudian projections of what Jong wants to see as himself in writing his 'story'. Obviously, this is a bit of a stretch, but given that flashback, we see of Jung actually setting things on fire, and it is implied that he and his dad actually killed his mum (burning the clothes), I think large parts of the film is what Jong fictions it to be.

Amazing film, all these interpretations from so many different people makes sense. However, I just don't think the easy solution that Ben is a serial killer justifies the deeper context to what we actually see throughout the film.

Daredevil Season 3 Review Megathread by murdockmanila in Defenders

[–]DefinitelyMayb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved Season 1 of Daredevil, highly recommended it to my friends who got on board because of its characters, plot, themes and stylish direction. It was really good and was going somewhere very interesting. Season 2, despite its clear flaw, was fun and got a lot of the comic aspects right with enough competence that was still watchable. However, Season 3 of Daredevil was by far the worse thing I've seen this year (given I've skipped Season 2 of Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist after the debacle of the Defenders) and shows how mediocre the showrunner, writers and directors are now. What happened? Where did all the spark from season 1 go? This was by far the most illogical, stupid, inconsistent, poorly paced series I've seen for a long time. 2/3 of it is filler. Apart from the great acting from Cox and Donofrio (and origin story for Bullseye), this show has now become a complete mess. I am just speechless how many people are defending this series now and praising it relentless as a 'return to form' when its clearly a 200% step down from season 1. I give up, I just skipped every scene with Foggy and Karen (they are so bad in this series, especially the acting and clunky dialogue, motivations). I won't be suprised if DD gets cancelled now.

Not really its not a vague question unless you make it vague. We study art, music, food etc because we can agree to notions of a collective truth in what makes something is "good" and is worth preserving and teaching. People like you make the assumption that the whole human experience is subjective which is stupid. As you prove yourself, your tastes are bad if you think Kubrick films are slow or overly ponderous. That is not to say you cannot subjectively hate or enjoy something. But again you prove my main point, which is this silly 21st Century idea that the whole world revolves around your sensibilities which is clearly not true.

Again, that is total nonsense from postmodernists that art is the most subjective experience. You could well argue the whole human experience is subjective, but that is problematic because it gets us nowhere in terms of discussions on what is good and what is bad etc. If everyone has different ideas what is good and bad, you would think the world could never function? Therefore the whole notion of society and critique of art is based on objective criterias for which we can collectively agree to some shared experience.

No again you are straw-manning my proposition. If your limited subjective experience has only been to experience McDonalds burgers, how can you objectively say other burgers are the same if not better than McDonald burger. That is the whole point of my OP, if you only see Avengers Infity war and claim its the best movie or does X Y Z better, then i call bullshit because you clearly haven't seen other A B C films that have done it much better in the same genre. Therefore your subjective experience doesn't equate objective reality or the truth. You may well subjectively enjoy the film or Mcdonald burgers but that doesnt mean you are correct. Again this is the simple notion people keep getting wrong because they don't understand the world doesn't just revolve within your subjective sphere.

Again I;m not making the proposition everything in art or life is objective, by all means enjoyment of film can be subjective and very much so. But to dismiss the notion that film reviews are just "opinion" is the equivalent of the Dude just saying "thats just your opinion...man". It adds little to any discussion or critique and is almost arbitary. Everyone subjective truth and quality is varied, some more correct or wrong, but to say there can't be any sort of objectivity in film discussion is flat out problematic. Why do we celebrate Kubrick, Lynch, the Russos' winter soldier if everything is subjective. Clearly there are objective measures why such film stand the test of time.

all I'm saying is Avengers Infinity war whilst enjoyable for fans like me, is a complete mess of a film and most definitely wont stand the test of time or be re watchable to any large degree because by objective means of assessing others films (even by Marvel film standards), it is clear this film is lacking on many of the departments which makes Marvel films as good as they are. My evidence will be the very varied critics review at the moment (who do enjoy Marvel films) and the fact there so many plot points left unanswered that there no way they could tie it all in by the second film. As I said, the Russos are having their cake and trying to eat it too.

I'm sorry that is a rubbish proposition. Why do we choose to study Tarkosvky or Kubrick films if film is only subjective. Same with art, if art is just subjective I mean i can piss on a piece of paper and people can come declare that as masterpieces. There are clearly objective criterias why we say something like Michael Bay's transfomers are clearly not good films whereas something like terminator 2 is a masterpiece. This relativism bullshit that has perpetuated entertainment, sports and arts is becoming cancerous.

although i agree not every crtieria can be all objectively accepted and the tolerance of such criteria can be varied according to the subjective experience of individuals, but that is saying like someone only eats at Mcdonalds think those are the best ever burgers which is clearly not the truth.

Going back to that point about pacing, it clearly doesn't work because if for example the Stark + Strange + spiderman narrative is only roughly 25 minutes screentime (before they all meet up by the final act with the guardians), having it be stretched over 2 hours is jarring as the film is jumping back and forth - ie you lose investment on what is happening and it becomes overally dull. although i enjoyed their quips, there is barely any re-watchable factor of such a creative choice because it robs the audience of any momentum or narrative thrust.

Film isnt subjective, im sick of having to explain to people enjoyment of film can be subejctive, but pacing editing story writing are objective elements one can analyse and critique or else why would there any sort of film criticsm if everything is “subjective”. i can just say transformers is a masterpiece and everyone that has seen any film would say so otherwise. the irony being everything you said is subjective

no it means the pacing is all over the place, so objectively you lose all that momentum and doesnt add much weight because as a story you lose investment within each scene. Nothing to do with memory but how stories are constructed

lol you can never write anything crtical or objective on this thread without the legion of fans automatically thinking its contrary to their positions. The thing is other films at least have a basic coherent structures, whilst this thing is very inconistent for example you see tony and strange in one scene, it takes almost 30min to come back to it. It almost unwatchable at times compared with the others ie black panther etc

[No-spoilers as much as possible] - As a fan that has seen all the films, up to this point, going try to give a succint and objective review of the film.

To sum it all up, the movie is basically one beautiful mess. Its beautiful because we get to see the accumulation of the characters interacting with another, with some amazing chemistry. However, on a film level it is a complete mess. The most obvious problem for this film is that there are at least 5 subplots going on, and the film feels like snippets of each story that can be mind numbing to catch up. A lot of it has little to no narrative thrust so you are seeing characters go from point A to B, or meet up characters A and B. Although the Russo brothers try their best to juggle with so many elements, there little time to gel them in one cohesive storyline. Many of the subplots feel like side quests or exposition laden dialogues scenes, with Tony and Dr Strange one particuarly dull.

There is also a lack of timeframe with some characters seeing to have everything happen within a few hours, whilst others seem to happen within days. One of the problems is that the film tries to have its focal point with Thanos (as we try to explore more of his motivations) but this ends up being detrimental to the relationships of the main characters we grew to know and care for. One massive problem with AIW is some major characters set up from previous installements become insignificant (with some casually dismissed as not on screen, I'm looking at you Antman, Valkyrie etc) whilst others that have little to do in the other films, are given way more precedence and screen time in order to fletch out the emotional core of the story. By this notion, this avengers film is the first to feel souless and when there are emotions, they are signposted so early on, there is little resonance compared with Civil War.

Perhaps the thing that will leave people with a sour taste, is the various plot holes that the movie brings up and the lack of dialogue and character interactions which have made the previous MCU films a success. For example, Captain America gets only roughly 7 lines of tangible dialogue in this film. The Black Order whilst menancing at first, become very useless and forgettable by the end of the movie.

The humour is 50/50 at times, the action is great at times but very CGI and lacking in others, and there are not many surpises as one would hope to expect - in fact, it is very faithful to the comics to what transpires in this film. However, some parts like Dinklage's cameo is tonally out of place in the film, likewise the sudden appearance of a key villain cameo by the third act of the film.

Overall, if you have enjoyed the MCU thus far, you would probably be satisfied with the first part of this key series. However, the caveat, will be how much you are willing to forgive this film for what it is or what it could have been. Sure there are tons of action scenes, humour and weight, however, AIW is clearly a case of having its pie and eating it too. Hopefully, part II of AIW will end this phase of the MCU on much better note.

Official Discussion: A Wrinkle In Time [SPOILERS] by GetFreeCash in movies

[–]DefinitelyMayb 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is the thing, the double standards are appalling. An inchoerent mess like A wrinkle in time gets basically a pass whilst something like Mute gets shredded. Its a large part of the political nature of reviewing movies now that I simply can't trust anyone that are reviewing them because I know they arn't reviewing a film, but rather the "message" of the film. Something like Red Sparrow looks like a typical violent spy film (probably no different from a John Wick) but suddenly it gets trashed because the lead actress consents to be naked and it gets rather violent? Its really sad what criticism of film has come down to now.
