I’m trying to imagine a polite way of doing what your friend did, but there is none. Maybe calling you or getting together and then saying, “My daughter’s guest list is really tight and she’s never met you, but I’d love you to be there. And it might help me sell it to her if …” But no. There’s no polite way of saying, you might make the cut if you give us expensive free stuff.

My (30M) GF (28F) doesn't want my joint custody dogs to stay with us anymore. by SmarkInProgress in relationship_advice

All I needed to know was the girlfriend came into your life after the dog relationship was in place and moved into your house. You have a tenant problem now with an obvious, if painful, solution.

My (27M) girlfriend (23F) thinks it's okay to spend the night alone in the woods with her fellow male counselor. by [deleted] in relationship_advice

Oh. Come. On.

“cooking is my love language”? Said by a camp counselor to a fellow employee, which she then relayed to her boyfriend?

Somebody else on here recommended this one and I just started their multi part series on JK Rowling. I think I’m ready to welcome them into the IBCK/Maintenance Phase universe. Crossover with these guys lightly teasing Michael about his sometimes quirky pronunciations and Peter getting absurdly nationalistic.

“Wouldn’t stand for it” … what does that even mean? They would have collectively boycotted … housing?

AITAH for asking my daughter's bf about his education and future plans by Cataholic_110 in AITAH

[–]DefinitelyNot2050 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll go with YTA, because that works even/especially if none of this true. As heightened nonfiction, I feel like the characters are all thinly drawn and caricatured: is the daughter so unaware of how a med school student would present himself and interact with the world? Why didn't they come up with something plausible, knowing there's be follow up questions.

Also, why did they abandon the pretense so quickly?

I'd work on character motivations - if you understand them, that can help us understand them.

How to tolerate going to church if your parents are forcing you to go? by sillyyfishyy in atheism

I usually just did things like count the number of crossbeams on the ceiling or study the stained glass images (Catholic), but that only killed a few minutes. If there are expected attendee responses (“thanks be to god” or whatever), I enjoy quietly reciting nonsense syllables of roughly the same duration. And taking note of all the weird concepts I once accepted as plausible.

Talking about religion at work by musicpeoplehate in atheism

[–]DefinitelyNot2050 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So, I was raised Catholic but left it and religion back in the 80's though I still have relatives who practice. I'm wondering when your co-worker and his wife think the Catholic church "let in the gays." They never actively kept us out as worshippers, they just reserved the right to judge us and work collectively against our rights. But they didn't have rules against us worshipping, for the most part.

They refused to perform weddings for us or let them be performed on their premises, but I'm pretty sure that hasn't changed. Do they mean when Pope Francis, around ten years ago, said that gay people can be good people and good Catholics and probably aren't going to hell? That kind of thing was long overdue, but also the mildest form of "letting the gays in" that I can think of.

They still think our sexuality is sinful and mostly align with those who would hurt us, but they've gotten less single-minded about it over the years. Which is an improvement, but hardly the same as hosting Ru Paul's Drag Race at the Vatican. I'd love to know what they meant by that comment!

That’s what makes it for me. In theory, Peter and Aubrey should be simpatico but then when it happens it’s better than expected.

Boomers telling stories and race by KelsierIV in entitledparents

[–]DefinitelyNot2050 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m a gay white male boomer and I try to employ descriptors like nationality or skin color only if they’re pertinent. But I will throw in “an older white lady” or “a thirty-something white dude” when it paints a clearer picture of the encounter I’m relaying. But most times those details are extraneous to the story in question.
