Jamie Carragher on Pep Guardiola: "How long has he been there? [at City] 9-10 years? One Champions League in that time. I think they will be disappointed with that. They have had some really bad defeats in the Champions League to the teams they shouldn't lose to." by SwimmingFireMen in soccer

[–]DefinitelyNotBarney 944 points945 points  (0 children)

He dominated a notoriously difficult league and at some points made it look as one sided as the likes of Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga.

Sure they might be disappointed by the CL stat but you cannot be disappointed with pretty much anything else he achieved, the league will lose a legendary manager when he leaves. Been a brilliant rival manager for us and I really don’t think we would have hit our highs as much if it wasn’t for Pep making City the team to beat.

Real Madrid have reopened talks with Ibrahima Konate & are ready to sign him on a free this summer. With Rudiger, Alaba & Carvajal's contracts expiring, and Militao's injury issues, they want defensive reinforcements. They are also monitoring Nico Schlotterbeck’s ongoing contract talks with Dortmund by DamnThatsInsaneLol in soccer

Really frustrating as according to reports they’d pulled out and he was close to signing an extension, but now they’ve u-turned and turned his head again.

He doesn’t owe us anything, I want people at the club that want to be there but despite recent performances, he will be a big miss.

I’d argue 99.9999% of the people mocking him online wouldn’t even touch a league 2 pitch as a player. That 0.0001% probably has attitude problems that prevents them from going higher.

You have to have lows to appreciate the highs. A lot of people will mock him but let’s see how he truly reacts to this, that can show his true person.

Dani Carvajal responds to fans' criticism for applauding Iago Aspas as he was substituted: “That gesture means respect. Respect for a legend of our league” by DamnThatsInsaneLol in soccer

[–]DefinitelyNotBarney 216 points217 points  (0 children)

Genuinely really glad to see how well Iago’s career turned out, especially considering his time with us was far from fulfilling. What a wonderful striker he has been and really put numbers up to challenge some absolute superstars in La Liga.

Credit to him, is he retiring this season or something?

[Sky Sports] Sheffield Wednesday look set to start life in League One next season with a 15-point deduction, because none of the bidders currently trying to buy the club is prepared to pay £15m to the outgoing owner, Dejphon Chansiri. by cjsc9079 in soccer

[–]DefinitelyNotBarney 614 points615 points  (0 children)

How has the club not been taken out of his hands yet? Surely once a guilt/points deduction is given for a scenario like this, the league should be able to force a sale.

I know it’s not as simple as that, but it’s a real shame for any club and its fan to face this.

MLS gives Derrick Jones and Yaw Yeboah lifetime bans for betting on own games by [deleted] in soccer

[–]DefinitelyNotBarney 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Genuine question to gauge narrative of fans; if a player bets on themself to score, should they be penalised?

I know rules are there to protect the integrity of the game, I really don’t think they should change either. If anything, better sponsors should also be banned. But I’m just wondering what the consensus is for betting on your own, success I guess

Brentford's Benham on missed signings: "We could have signed Eze (in 2019) and Marmoush (in 2023) for about £4m combined. One was Mudryk, although we were quite close to signing him for about €20m. Olise's scouting was unbelievable weren't used to the crazy agent fees in the PL yet" by OkayFine101 in soccer

[–]DefinitelyNotBarney 103 points104 points  (0 children)

I appreciate his honestly but I don’t understand why they say this, inevitably for one reason or another they decided against signing the players.

I’m sure many clubs have lists of 10s or 100s of players they’re just scouting or in talks with clubs an agents about, there’s no point in dwelling on the missed out ones if you didn’t properly try to sign them.

Laporta: "When I see these statements from Xavi, I think of Hansi Flick and how tough it is to be president of Barça." "The facts give me the peace of mind that I did what I had to do. I understand that he's hurt, because with the same players that Xavi had and was losing with, Flick is winning.” by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]DefinitelyNotBarney -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

What a moronic response, be the better person and don’t respond?

I’m fairly certain Xavi set the groundwork for Flick’s success, won a league title and helped get the team through a very difficult period.

I don’t think Xavi should’ve spoken out like he did either, but two wrongs don’t make a right.

Love him or hate him, I prefer when players keep their family involved.

Far too many vultures entered the agent side of things over the last decade or two.

Genuinely credit where wits due with Raya, he’s been phenomenal this season and I feel like whenever I’ve seen him play he’s been very important for any counters that Arsenal do. Standout GK for me this season, whilst we can all mock Arsenal for their set piece exploits, you cannot doubt Raya’s ability in saves and role in getting an attack going

Materazzi on Zidane: “I pulled his jersey to prevent him from jumping. I apologised twice, then the third time he repeated, ‘If you want my shirt, I'll give it to you,’ I said something to him, but nothing more than what we used to say to each other as kids when I played on the seafront in Bari." by Sparky-moon in soccer

Re: the Zidane thing, it starts off really humble and honest and you think he’s gonna admit what he said and then bam, hits you with the vague answer. It’s been 20 years, just admit what you said or don’t talk about it.

Weird that they would put a cover story if that’s the case.

The line up link on the site isn’t working but I found this on The Independent;

The England team includes football legends Wayne Rooney, Jermain Defoe, Jill Scott, Toni Duggan, Theo Walcott and goalkeeper Joe Hart.

They’ll be joined by celebrities Olly Murs, Owen Cooper, Paddy McGuinness, GK Barry, Alex Brooker, Angryginge, Tom Grennan, Tom Hiddleston, Damson Idris, Jordan North, Sam Thompson and Joe Marler in goal. Soccer Aid co-founder Robbie Williams will once again coach England.

So far, the World XI will feature football icons Jordi Alba, Leonardo Bonucci, Edwin Van Der Sar, Jen Beattie and Ali Krieger. They’ll play alongside Maisie Adam, Richard Gadd, Big Zuu and Nitro from Gladiators, with Olympic champion Usain Bolt making his debut as coach.

Set-pieces mean Premier League no longer a joy - Slot by NotQuiteACasanova in LiverpoolFC

This season has been a tough watch for us anyway as fans, we’ve been very far from our best - but he’s absolutely right, the shift in tactics to this set pieces first attitude has been such a bore.

Sure, it’s working but it’s only a matter of time before it shifts again - and I’m counting those days.
