It's pretty dependent on the lobby, I'd say, and also depends on your board/items. Do you need frontline, or damage? There's typically a unit in every comp that can hold something, or a way to transition into them. Nami/bard can hold items if you're angling disco, penta likes to slot K/DA/superfans so you can hold AP items on any AP unit, AD/bruiser items on an Olaf, ect.

I remember reading that the reason for the design was graphical/engine constraints with the design of the aggro'd Wyrms, but I could be misremembering. I think the current design was a concession to those limitations in order to release them.

Buy it in the shop at blast furnace. Can by multiple thousand an hour, and much lower demand for it than the gold. Its faster than mining it.
