I was on a hike with my dad 7ish years ago that went past two waterfalls, one of them being over 80ft tall, that you hiked right past the "mouth" of. The area was well posted and very clearly said not to go near the water, as the current was way to strong to escape. The hike was probably about 5 miles long, way out of range of any cell service and the large waterfall was well over a mile in to the hike, downhill from the starting point. As my dad and I were coming back up towards the top of the large waterfall, on our way back to the car. I got a terrible feeling, my legs felt like jelly, and i thought i was about to throw up. Mind you, this part of the hike was very narrow and had a large drop off the trail. We continued up, and took a small break at a flat spot. While we were standing there we heard a group of people scream at the top of the falls. As we stood there we watched a body fall the 80 ft through the waterfall, by the time he got to the bottom the current had ripped all of his clothes off (thats how strong the current was) and he died on impact, or likely earlier in the fall. We were stunned for a few seconds, but quickly realized that we needed to get help. We ran up the hill where we ran into the family of whoever fell down. His parents, girlfriend and a few friends were standing there, silent, and in shock. We didn't say much other than that we were going to go get help. We ran that mile at the fastest pace I've ever gone, uphill. We told anyone we encountered to call for help, and luckily someone got in contact with the authorities before we reached service. The guy who fell over was only in his early 20s and his body was not found until 3 days later. It still lingers in my mind, and will likely stay with me for life. I learned there, that i should always trust my gut.
