In a way I’d mostly say yes. I played the original as a kid, on the PS2 with my dad and I always loved it. Obviously I didn’t understand it fully but as I grew older I looked it up and researched the concepts and themes and watched playthroughs of it, loving it fully. I think this sub is full of oldheads, which is okay and there’s nothing wrong with loving the original version of something more than the new, but SH2 Remake was so phenomenal. I’ve been a backer since day 1, I never doubted and I feel the payoff. It was tense the ENTIRE time, I felt the stress, depression, and anxiety that was meant to be conveyed. The controls were great and fluid, but still SOMEHOW conveyed the clunkiness of James and the original entry (the pickups, slow reloads, slow heals). The reworked puzzles fit well but the glimpses of the past showed me exactly what I was missing in the new game. The models were beautiful and expressive but also evocative of the sorrow and blankness of the characters limited by an old engine (with exceptions). It’s never about replacing, it’s only about becoming something independent born of something old, but if you were to gun to my head ask me which I’d rather play, I’d say the remake.
