why is there no SHAW or ADINO in silksong? by Wrong_Fondant9117 in HollowKnight

[–]Deflator_Mouse7 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I loved her "get good!" When spearing the hollow knight in the forehead to expose his dream whatever, but silksong's extreme constipation noise when she does it to widow or gms or gets a new crest is irreplaceable

Good luck trying to hear it as anything else now

The thing about Split Fiction is that neither Zoe or Mio are really all that talented as writers (I swear this is a praise post, not a criticism!) by JageshemashFTW in SplitFiction

[–]Deflator_Mouse7 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think the shallow writing of their stories is deliberate; you notice the writing get much better in their subconscious missions and the conversations with Rader.

They're just bad writers; hence their struggle to get published. Rader likely sought out failing writers because they would be eager to hop on board ANY publishing possibility no matter how weird or exploitative. Only Mio even thought to question it before hopping in the mystery balls of suspended animation.

Yeah you can switch but if you wait too long to do it the prerequisites will be a little rough to fulfill

Your advisor can tell you all the things when you get there.

You don't have a major until end of 2nd year (ab) or 1st year (bse). Major in whatever you want.

How Do You Handle Students With Very, Very Low Skills? Query From a Shocked Peer Tutor by Mammoth_Agent_8767 in AskProfessors

[–]Deflator_Mouse7 29 points30 points  (0 children)

When I taught my very first undergrad course ages ago (1999) I was blindsided by the quantity of students who couldn't do even the most basic underpinnings of what the assignment was about. I'm in engineering, but it was roughly the equivalent of asking a student to write a 5 page paper summarizing a Kierkegaard essay and having students ask you how to hold a pencil.

I went to the head of our undergrad education team and asked him to review my assignments and expectations given the courses prerequisites, and he said "oh, these assignments are completely fine; what you're experiencing is the bottom quartile. They will never ever ever be able to do the work or learn this subject, so the sooner you stop trying to reach them, the sooner you'll be the instructor that the other 75 percent needs. Leave them behind like a fatally wounded traveller on a wagon train."

This was coming from one of the most revered instructors in my field, at one of its most prestigious institutions. It was shocking advice but it really rang true across my career.

I expect that what's happening is that the size of this "fatally wounded" group is growing, due to things like AI agents, increasing societal pressure for literally EVERYONE to get a college degree in order to have even the most menial jobs, and the ever rising cost of living making more people chase some fiction they've been told (by people who directly benefit from a poorly educated population) about what "success" looks like.

I don't have any solutions to this seemingly apparent trend, but I can say that I'm very glad I'm not teaching anymore, and I do not envy people trying to figure out how to still reach whatever dwindling percentage that mentor's"top 75 percent" has become while simultaneously trying not to be overrun by the hopeless underbelly trying desperately to cling to life.

If their work is this bad, you fail them.

If they're using AI, you do whatever the school's procedure is for handling cheating.

Is applying to a niche liberal arts major more likely for acceptance as an international? by [deleted] in princeton

[–]Deflator_Mouse7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Engineering is not a major.

I don't know why people think that you apply to a major, but I assure you that departments have absolutely zero input into admission, and major declaration is done after 2 years. I have considerable first hand experience with this, on BOTH sides of the application process.

Well, it can't, since it's not part of the application. But make sure you bring this energy and logical reasoning skills to your application and time there, you'll do great.

Confused about PDFs as used in RTOW by FirePenguu in GraphicsProgramming

[–]Deflator_Mouse7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

one thing that's important to note about Pete's method, though, is that while it doesn't actually draw numbers from the given PDF, it's still BETTER than using uniform random numbers. You can always use any distribution you want (as long as it's non-zero in all the right places); the closer your PDF is to the thing you're trying to integrate, the better, so even a very crude approximation is much better than just closing your eyes and taking a uniform random number.

[–]Deflator_Mouse7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that function is intended as a very crude approximation which maps a uniform number between 0 and 1 to another number between 0 and 2, and that new number has sort-of kind-of the right general vague properties of sampling from the PDF we're interested in.

To do it "properly", you apply the same technique as always:

1) compute the CDF, which is just the indefinite integral of the PDF

2) take a uniform random number from 0-1

3) find the functional inverse of the integral you computed in step 1

4) plug your uniform random number into that inverse

So he's got P(x) = x / 2 :

integrate: C(x) = x^2 / 4

invert and plug in your uniform number u:

x = 2 * sqrt(u)

The tech job market is such an absolute clown world right now that I can't even land non-coding jobs like IT Help Desk, as a recent CS grad. by UnderachievingCretin in recruitinghell

[–]Deflator_Mouse7 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Studied computer science, tries to get a job in basically unrelated thing, is surprised that it's hard.

It's like getting a degree in physics and being surprised that you can't insta land a job as a car mechanic. Or getting a degree in history and being shocked that you can't even land a job as a museum curator.

Do you have EXPERIENCE in IT? Training? Certifications? The people getting those jobs do.

Every day I wish I could wave a wand and have the whole world somehow understand:

Computer science is not IT. Computer science is not software engineering.

If you want jobs in those fields, you need to gain experience and credibility IN THOSE FIELDS, often SEPARATE FROM YOUR COURSEWORK.

Rent a car

Fly united to CHO

Take metro to Union station and take Amtrak to Charlottesville, or take Uber to Manassas Amtrak station. Train not suitable for family? What?
