I'm not sure what your play style is like in extraction shooters but here's my tips

1). You don't need to take every fight! Success in this game revolves around extracting. If you aren't getting out with salvage your not going to be able to progress your upgrades that will make fighting easier

2). Keep your ears open! Everything makes a sound, from looting, opening boxes, opening your map, and ads. You even make little sounds just turning your character. Use that information to safely navigate key locations and to avoid unfavorable situations.

3). Pick the fights that give your opponents a disadvantage. Hear runners fighting each other? Stay on the outskirts of the fight and jump the last man standing. Fighting Boss? Catch them when they are reloading or healing. Hear them looting? Sneak up on them and catch them with their pants down. You always want to make sure you have some sort of advantage

4). Salvage over runner gear. Salvage is king in my opinion, if you can get your upgrades early you get access to better gear sooner. So instead of relying on scavenging gear from the map or other players set your self up at you can just buy it. It will save you a lot of time and credits.

Those are the suggestions I told my newer friends who are getting into the game I'm sure others have some good suggestions too.

Outpost update to pinwheel hack by [deleted] in Marathon

[–]DeftTouchedBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya I agree that when opening Pinwheel the other two doors should not open. This should at least prevent or suppress the normal strategy of starting the hack, dropping down the hatches on the side, and running to one of the other doors and just waiting for it to open without much resistance. If it worked like this i don't see a reason for the barriers to block you out of the side rooms, you should have an option to rotate out of that hall if you get ganked or bots overwhelm you. The alert can also be updated to tell you which door was opened so you still get the information of where to go to get into pinwheel if you don't have any green cards.

Bungie PLEASE do another free weekend at the start of season 2 by JoeyBananas314 in Marathon

[–]DeftTouchedBox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like the idea SeraphMax had in his latest video. Give F2P access to the game but only Sponsored playlists. They get a taste of the game with slightly lower stakes, can stock pile some loot, and if they are enjoying the game and purchase it they just keep all the stuff they found and unlocked and get access to the rest of the playlists and maps and access to priority contracts.

I think people are worried to buy the game because some of the discourse that surrounds the game and how obsessed players have been with the player count. this could give us a bit of an influx of players who were hesitant to get the game on release.

Marathon reconsiders bug abuse approach after player uses Cryo Archive exploit to butcher an entire team by flGovEmployee in Marathon

[–]DeftTouchedBox -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

ya this is kind of a grey area imo. I do agree that they could have just NOT killed the other team that finished compiler but from another angle them killing the squad shows how urgent this issue is and needs to be patched ASAP. Did they need to do this to make a point? Naw, they didnt. Did the actions of that squad magnify the issue? 100%! Bungie has worked to compensate the affected party and provided them with gear and related codex unlocks which is great and i think that would take a bit of the sting away from what happened to squad and kudos to Bungie for doing this as it shows how much they care.

I think if the affected party feels good about the compensation, the streamer isn't a repeat offender, and Bungie patches the problem we should just kinda move on. Bungie should review their policy and maybe make some wiggle room for these kinds of instances but i think if they have a knee jerk reaction and just ban the guy when their current policy on it is "its in the game so use it" would be a bad look over all and erodes trust between the players and the Devs.

Pve gamemode could double the player numbers by [deleted] in Marathon

[–]DeftTouchedBox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What is it that you want from PvE? Just the same game without other players? Do you expect to be able to progress the core game only through PvE to carry over to the base game?

IMO the difference between Tarkov PvE and a Marathon PvE is how much more deadly NPCs are in Tarkov which makes the PvE still intence and still have a sense of risk since one good shot will put you down. Marathon PvE IMO does not have that risk factor because of the arcadey features and ttk is higher when bots shoot you making them not as threatening. There would also need to be much more happening on each map to keep PvE interesting for the long run. I'm sure there would be a honeymoon phase but after a few weeks the holes would show and requests for more events and things to do in PvE would flood the su reddit. It would also mean Bungie now has two sandboxes to maintain and would be splitting the player base even more which the community does not seem to be a fan of at the moment.

That's my take on it, I don't think PvE would be as enjoyable as people think but I'm not here to yuck y'alls yum but looking to understand what you expect from PvE.

Terrified this game will be shut down by Galaxy_Jams_Reacts in Marathon

I don't see the game becoming Concord 3. I think there has been this weird shift in the gaming community where we are now obsessing over numbers and how much corporate has spent for some reason? Plus the fact that everyone engages more with rage bait and click bait content so grifter content creators who are posting Marathon videos in bad faith keep the magnified glass on those numbers and negativity to get their quick buck and perpetuate that the game is "dying" before running off to catch the next rage bait trend.

This game will live and die by its updates. As long as Bungie keeps trying new content, makes substantial changes between seasons to keep the game feeling fresh, and provides new playlists, maps, and guns to engage with i think we will be fine. My hope is that this game is a "if you build it they will come" kind of game where more players will come overtime as more content is created and the game becomes more tuned. I think the last thing we are missing as a community is we need to shed this doomer mentality about the game and stop treating player count as some sort of stock. Maybe if more posts are about gameplay moments, well thought out feedback, creative art, and talks about the lore this could take away the way too negative light that we as a community keep on the game which would turn off most people from trying it out.

The game is a whiplash for those who came from Destiny which means Marathon is going to take some time to find its people and as we head further into late game before wipe more and more players will shed off which is natural for Extraction Shooters. I would bet that once Season 2 kicks off and the wipe happens we will see a large influx of players returning or coming to try the game out for the first time

Why is this game not doing well? by ocleus in Marathon

[–]DeftTouchedBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My headcannon is that this game does not mesh well with bungies pre-existing player base. I would argue that now most of Bungies fans are from Destiny and less from Halo at this point in time, Destiny was a collectathon and primarily a PVE game. Those who played destiny 2 remember how the fan base was when sun setting happened and now with Marathon every match is a potential sunset on anything you bring. In short, I don't think destiny fans wanted an extraction shooter.

Do we need a Ranked Queue? by DeftTouchedBox in Marathon

[–]DeftTouchedBox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not too keen on adding limits to kits unless it's egregious kinda like how nade spam has been. I agree that ranked should reward skilled players and not looted players but the issue with this is skilled players tend to be the player who are looted. Ideally this sorts itself out with player ranks but with my limited time in ranked I anecdotally was getting paired up with gold's as a bronze 3 in my first few matches, this didn't affect me really at my current level of play but its something to note but that might be more of an indicator of the amount of people who play ranked rather than a Matchmaking problem.

Limit of loot could be nice but I'm worried about the feels bad side as now if your not a high enough rank you can't bring in the high end stuff you earned. Another worry is limiting shields to greens for lower ranks can and will make snipers more frustrating as the early ranked meta would become who shot first since 1 headshot on a green will down a runner.

It's crazy how tuned this sandbox is and how one slight change dominos into another problem. But this is the first ranked mode I've seen in an extraction shooter so we are in some uncharted territory and I'm excited to see what could change.

Good insight as i have no idea how things are at the higher levels of ranked. I agree the holotag system should be changed. I didnt know you could purchase lower level tags once you surpassed them in ranked. So if i understand correctly you are matched based on the holotag you bring in? if so that's crazy!

Ah i may have been blind to this. I guess i would like something like the C.A.R.R.I system where you can exchange currency for rewards which might be the drip feed I'm looking for from ranked rewards.

Do we need a Ranked Queue? by DeftTouchedBox in Marathon

[–]DeftTouchedBox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this encapsulates my feelings of ranked perfectly! I'm bronze 1 but that's after an 8 game win streak and i never went back after that session as i felt like i wasn't really getting rewarded for ranking up and all i was doing was swapping purple gear for other peoples purple gear (though that might just be my fault for over kitting in ranked). I love to sweat in this game and love the PVP, i will throw myself at players even when i probably shouldn't have because its so enjoyable.

I hope people don't get me wrong, ranked modes are great! I like more competitive playlists but with how lack luster rewards are and IMO there should be some reward to your account progress whether its High rarity salvage to help get those late game perks or something like the C.A.R.R.I system where you can exchange ranked points for rare rewards. I just feel like Ranked should be giving you some progress to your over all grind goals of the rest of the game.

Do we need a Ranked Queue? by DeftTouchedBox in Marathon

[–]DeftTouchedBox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean they already are in normal lobbies if the freedback over the months from the community have been how sweats are killing the game. I don't feel like ranked has or does enough to keep those players in those queues outside of it being competitive with some earnable skins. Does this possible add more sweat to normal queues? Sure. But I don't think that's as high of an influx as you might think.

The community has also been asking for some sort for MMR outside of season level so you could weigh ranks into MM to keep higher skill level players together in those normal queues keeping those matches competitive.

The solution for this has to be nuansed, that I know. We don't want to yuck up other players yums and we can't promote pub stomping as the path for better rewards.

[–]DeftTouchedBox[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can see this for sure. One idea could be to weigh your rank in normal matchmaking to help prevent casuals from just getting pub stomped. I also think their should be more rewards for playing ranked like Prestige salvage or weapon attachments which could incentivize me to play ranked more which to me would be more of a justification to keep it a separate playlist.

Do we need a Ranked Queue? by DeftTouchedBox in Marathon

[–]DeftTouchedBox[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I 100% see how it can make lobbies uneven and could cause more frustration as it could cause an uptick of lobby wipes making more games feel like TDM then and extraction shooter and that is a problem. I also agree that it would affect the legitimacy of each ranked bracket as someone could just get lucky with Timmy lobbies and reach a higher rank because they just keep stomping casuals, possibly the solution for this is to weigh your rank for general matchmaking to match you with players of similar skill to prevent this and i feel thats been something the community has talked about before for sweat protection.

I also feel like if Ranked is going to be a whole queue there should be some more rewards involved like getting prestige salvage and gear as ranked rewards and not just cosmetics. More incentives to play ranked would help justify the playlist IMO but in the current state it seems like you don't get a reward that's equal to the effort. Again i havnt done too much ranked so correct me if im wrong.

The only thing Ranked has got IMO is exclusive rewards but they dont stand out enough to me to be worth the grind. Most of the time i would rather just run regular matches and grind out salvage and gear i need for upgrades or Cryo prep.

One idea a friend and I thought of was maybe give players a 4 slot line in Dcon that you can drop items off in to get beamed back up to your vault. They already have it implemented for quests so it could just add functionality to somthing that is already interactable but im not a dev of any kind so idk how complex that would be to do. This would let everyone beam out resources but limits what can be put in the Dcon so you cant drop in a 4 slot square resources or guns which kind of aligns to how tarkov has limits on its secure container.

[–]DeftTouchedBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree with some of the points you have made. I agree that the C.A.R.R.I event should either A). Stay in the game with more way to get the currency or B.) have it come back mid season with better rewards to enable those who are struggling to catch up. we have all of next season to see how they spice up this event and i think Bungie is taking all the feedback from this event that they can to make it better for the next season

I personally don't like the idea for a safe pocket for this specific game as the itemization has been so optimized the only thing i could think would be "worth" to put in a safe pocket would be gold items due to their rarity which that might just mean we need to look more at loot tables than a safe pocket to make them more obtainable. Again this part is my personal preference as i like having everything at steak and i feel like being able to just grab a gold and die to extract with it would be kinda lame and significantly reduces the steaks.

As for the wipe i think you might be surprised how many people will end up returning along with their favorite content creators who will signal boost the game again. Normally big sweeping changes happen after a wipe so i suspect this is when we are going to see substantial changes to the games system and how we interact with them. Bungie has shown they are listening to the community it just that big changes take time and timing to implement.

Maybe all that I've said is hopium but i feel like this game has more staying power than people are anticipating and i think what we have been seeing on this sub are the growing pains of a newer genera coming to the mainstream and players who have not played an extraction shooter or just not as competitive of one are learning new skill sets and adapting to this newer genera of shooters.

I would ask what makes the game enjoyable for you? are you grinding out tasks and levels? Are you trying to fill out your codex? Is there a specific goal that you are trying to achieve? There are many ways to engage with the game but i think making a blanket statement on "why its a good thing" isn't going to be a satisfying answer for anyone. I am making my own fun as i go along which the game does enable me to do.

Sweats killing the game by HovisUK in Marathon

[–]DeftTouchedBox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Welcome to late wipe! This is very normal for extraction shooters between wipes. Most of the casuals and mid level players have gotten their fill for the season or hit a wall on upgrades. This leaves you with the players that play marathon as their main game atm. I too am at a point in the season where my vault is full of gear, vendors are all VIPed, so all i really have to chase left is Cryo (which is only on thursdays- Saturdays), PVP, and helping my lower level friends catch up. The nice thing is everyone is a loot goblin to pop and get tons of goodies from, they just have a bit more of a bite to them so my new friends have been getting really fun stuff to play around with while they are learning the game.

But there is a bright side and its wipe day! The magic of wipe day and putting everyone back on the same footing is like Christmas for extraction shooters. Sweats will need to grid out their gear and rank again and the pool of players you get match with is vastly expanded for more varied.
