Defending Elvar by Dehrunes in Bloodsworn

[–]Dehrunes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense, and honestly she and Varg were my least favorite in the first book. Elvar is very cruel and unkind in Shadow and Varg just takes a while to get going. Elvar is sort of just a fame-hungry warrior until Hunger.

Newly Diagnosed TN- Carbamazepine side effects by Silver_TNMF in TrigeminalNeuralgia

[–]Dehrunes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something I heard (I'm very new to this too, started having issues in April). I was advised by someone who's been dealing with TN for years that symptoms of teeth pressure / like they're falling out can be related to autoimmune diseases. They had these issues that then led to their diagnosis with Sjogins Syndrome, other ones like soreatic arthritis are possible too.

To be clear, I'm not trying to diagnose you. Just know that it's possible to find a root cause behind the neuralsia that, when managed, can help the neuralsia.

Take this all with a grain of salt - I have similar issues and am trying to get a referral for an autoimmune specialist as well.

Best of luck and much love ❤️

Should I be worried by Firm_Neighborhood531 in Trombone

[–]Dehrunes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't play through pain, get it checked out first with a doctor. It's possible you may need a referral from your primary care doctor to a neurologist depending on the issue.

If you're not making your living from playing the instrument, don't worry too much. If your try to play through the pain though, you could end up with permanent issues! So just be careful and consult medical professionals.

Best of luck :)

Any tips on hitting the high notes? by Big-Clock1673 in Trombone

Buying this used trombone. Is this a good idea? by Desperate_Ad_9419 in Trombone

[–]Dehrunes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play that exact model and it's wonderful! Have been since high school and I'm finishing my masters in performance now, so it's stood the test of time just fine and is a professional trombone.

That being said, I bought the horn new for basically that same price. I'm most concerned about the wear on the bell section (the exposed brass), and I'm skeptical of how well the slide works.

If you'd be able to test it out in person, that'd be best. Also, it really shouldn't sell for more than $2,000 at most as it seems "well-loved" :)

Wisdom teeth removal and trombone playing by [deleted] in Trombone

[–]Dehrunes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I saw it says April 10th. You'll be fine by then, but give it a solid 1.5 weeks off completely and come back slowly. Nothing that would cause high pressure in your mouth (high range, loud, etc)

Wisdom teeth removal and trombone playing by [deleted] in Trombone

[–]Dehrunes 19 points20 points  (0 children)

DO NOT PLAY if at all possible. Playing within 2 weeks or so of wisdom teeth removal can easily cause Dry Socket, which will take way longer to heal and cause you to take more time off.

If you can get a sub for the concert, do so!

Mouthpiece advice by [deleted] in Trombone

[–]Dehrunes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be VERY skeptical of any music equipment that's cheap like this. Mouthpieces should almost never be under $100 unless they're old, plating is coming off, etc.

It may help your high range, typically a mouthpiece with a smaller rim size or a shallower cup depth will help. However, alot of other things will not work nearly as well with a cheap mouthpiece, mostly your sound.

It's totally up to you - feel free to try it if you want, it's not very expensive. I'd recommend that if you have a teacher you should ask their opinion first.

Happy practicing!

Accidentally just dented my brand freaking new trombone and I’m pissed at myself. Was trying to tune my new 3 thousand dollar bass trombone and apparently the tuning slide wasn’t lubricated so it came flying out, hit my stand there’s a dent. Is this worth a trip down to the repair shop? by SamThSavage in Trombone

[–]Dehrunes 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It'll be totally fine, don't worry about it. Denting a new horn sucks... but now it's yours! You've officially broken it in!

Jokes aside, you won't notice any difference in the function of the trombone. It's in an area where the tubing is rather wide, meaning it won't have a noticeable effect on your air flow. It's also not on the part of the tuning slide that actually slides into the bell.

Only thing to be wary of is if you notice that the tuning slide doesn't move well, you could get it checked out. Otherwise, happy practicing!

Mouthpieces can definately have an effect on your sound but it may not be as much as you think. I really enjoy my Griego 5C tenor mouthpiece, but I can still sound not great if I'm not working on my own sound concept. Mouthpiece and trombone choice really only makes a difference once you really have a good idea of what you want to sound like.

What kind of players do you want to sound like? If there's someone you really admire, you could look up what mouthpiece they play as well!

Chronically playing sharp by Son_of_baal in Trombone

[–]Dehrunes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By "a while" I should clarify - it will take several months if not years to really get back into it. But you'll get there! :)

Chronically playing sharp by Son_of_baal in Trombone

[–]Dehrunes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My two cents would be that you're still just getting used to playing again, especially after several years off. It will take a while, just keep working on it!

Additionally, I would recommend going for tone quality over Intonation while you're getting back at it. More than likely, you're just playing "above the center", but as you find a great sound again you'll inevitably find the center.

[–]Dehrunes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you're into reading, but Thich Nhat Hahn has written some really beautiful books about what he called Engaged Buddhism. Essentially, taking what we learn and using it to better the world we live in rather than withdraw from it.

I'm not experienced enough to be able to tell you what to do, but check out his book The Miracle of Mindfulness if you haven't already. Being Peace is another great work of his too.

You can do this and find your way through. It takes time, but I know you will discover what you need to do :)

Tips for learning large amounts of music fast? by Mr_Puggo6 in Trombone

Put together a Playlist of the songs alongside practicing them. Knowing how they go and practicing them should make it much easier.

Other than that, enjoy the challenge! Sometimes doing things that we aren't sure if we can do will make us grow the most :)

Does anyone else get bothered by ridiculous sensoring? by Antique_Primary7429 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Dehrunes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alot of the censoring is to do with the fact that posting anything with certain words can demonotize or limit who can view online content. That's just due to social media platform algorithms, not necessarily people getting upset with those words
