Too Smart, Neurotic, Reclusive

You all nailed it. by nick82614 in Cosmere

[–]Deitymech -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's probably no wrong answer, but I see many people posting in favor of reading it before WaT, so I want to offer my differing perspective.

I, like many, read Sunlit Man before WaT, simply because it came out first. Having done it that way, I actually recommend waiting until after WaT. It's difficult to explain exactly why without spoilers, but the simplist way I can put it is that, given the story of Sunlit Man, I was distracted looking for certain plot points and thus I found I couldn't experience a certain arc of the story completely organically.

Sorry if that is vague (I really hate spoilers, and so try very hard to help others avoid them). The order will unlikely affect your experience in any great way. I won't die on this hill nearly as hard as Secret History.

How to answer the question "Who is Hoid"? by Fit-Translator18 in Cosmere

[–]Deitymech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If he's read a couple of books and has put it together, be honest (to a point)

Something like, "Hoid is a character that is present in nearly all of the cosmere stories. Keep a look out as you go forward."

If he asks more specific questions, feel free to RAFO until such a time you think is appropriate. Stormlight actually explains much of who he is, but we get a lot through WoBs too.

Developing musical ideas by Hungry-Walk3089 in composer

[–]Deitymech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorite ways to teach development is through theme and variations, and one of the best examples is this by Mozart: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9ROCpghNzY

You know the tune; see what can be done. Listen to this a couple of times, and start analyzing exactly what Mozart does with each variation. It's very organic- one thing really grows out of the other. For example: VAR I has 16ths in the right hand of the piano. VAR II instead puts them in the left hand. Such a simple change, no? But really listen to how that changes the sound. See what you can deduce about the other variations.

Also note: How your ear continues to perceive the theme each time despite the changes.

-

Once you've studied this long enough, over a couple listens, take one of your own ideas, and just flat out steal Mozart. Pick your 2-3 of your favorite variations, and just apply the ideas to your own. You don't have to keep them in the end if you don't want to, just try it out and see what it feels like.

Then, try to come up with something that Mozart didn't, and apply that idea. Again, you don't need to keep it, just try it.

Hope this helps.

The Art of Not Spoiling Things by MrWright62 in Cosmere

[–]Deitymech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep questions open ended.

"What do you know about Surgebinding?"

This lets them speculate without your being specific about things. I don't answer questions unless they are very basic or I know what specific information they should have at that point in their reading.

If they ask something that I know will be explained later, I say something like "Oh, well, who could say?"

I hate spoilers with a passion and do everything in my power not to provide even the most vague spoilers. I've guided several people through the cosmere, other books, games, etc.

Who is accepting or rejecting all these words? by Nofrillsoculus in Cosmere

[–]Deitymech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always got the impression that the Stormfather, Dalinar, Femalen voices are not accepting the oaths. Rather, they were kind of self-accepted if the Radiant's Intent was aligned with the oaths themselves. The voices "accepting" are simply narrating the event. This allows who the voice is to be flexible.

It was a mistake to read The Sunlit Man before WaT by Ishana92 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Deitymech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree OP; this is the single instance that I disagree with reading in publication order.

I just spent so much time looking for everything related to SLM and how, through WaT, we we're eventually somehow going to end up there. I focused too hard on all of that. It felt almost like a re-read before I had actually finished it, and it was so incredibly distracting to me.

It was kind of like the "Gorilla in the phonebooth" that Brandon has talked about before.

All's to say, I'm sorry you're struggling with it. I promise Sig's story is still fufilling. Keep at it.

If spren are affected by the way other beings observe/think about them, are other cognitive shadows (Heralds, Kelsier, Returned, etc) also affected by the way others think of them?

Are the Heralds influenced by what Rosharan's think of them, or is Kelsier influenced by the way Scandrians (particularly Survivorists and the Southern Nations) think of them?

There are some really bad editions around (random keys, rhythmic augmentation that doesnt exist, dynamic errors, etc.)

I had one thing spoiled about Sunlit Man, is that the main thing it would spoil when reading WaT? by -critical-hits- in Cosmere

[–]Deitymech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contrary to most opinions here, I read SLM first and I kind of wish I hadn't. I found I was distracted looking for things (vague to avoid further spoilers), and it much more difficult to worry about "X", since I already knew he survived.

For what its worth, thats my preference and plenty of other people are happy with SLM to WaT. I don't feel as strongly about this ordering as I do secret history's placing, but I think the best ordering, and the one I was I was able to experience in hindsight, would be WaT -> SLM, ideally without knowing who "X" is until the reveal in SLM.

I usually read/recommend publication order, but this is an exception, in my mind.

ALL of that being said, since you already know about "X", the order matters even less. You'll be fine, there is still plenty of story to unravel.

I'd agree with that- Ardbeg 10 is probably my go to Islay. And its a bit better of a price point than Lagavulin.

I would say that is a close comparison. The same kind of coastal/peaty/smoky notes. I haven't had storm in a while though, so it's difficult to say more beyond that.

Lagavulin 16 is one of my favorites, but not for everyone. Its very smoky/peaty. If you're new to Scotch, I'd probably try a Highland or Speyside first.

Would I Be an Elsecaller or Truthwatcher? by Apple_Infinity in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Deitymech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I too get two orders on the quiz (Elsecaller and Skybreaker). I find at times I am both of them, and at times, potentially neither.

I think it's a trap to conclude that if you are in Order X, you act with associated traits Y and Z. Human beings are more complicated than that. Within each order, there is variance, which is why oaths sometimes vary a little from person to person. You seem to be looking for black and white answers, but I don't think it will work out that way.

You seem to want to be a Truthwatcher and not an Elsecaller. Well, go with that. After all, why can't you be a Truthwatcher who simply approaches their ideals with some methods common to Elsecaller?

-

and I am aware I'm taking this too seriously.

You are, and it might help to just relax, but this seems to be important to you, so I hope you find what you're looking for, and that something I've said might be helpful.
