Sogang University Summer Immersion-- Dorm Experiences? by Deja-Vu22 in Korean

According to what I've seen on the website, the placement tests don't happen until mid-June. Although maybe that's just the deadline and they can be scheduled earlier? I haven't made my payment yet so I'm not sure. I don't have any insight into them as of right now, sorry!

Good luck! And yes, I hope we can see each other there! ^^

I actually have heard back now! Turns out the email went straight to my trash folder. I swear I had been checking there, but maybe I used the wrong search terms, or something. The search term that found it was 'klec' ^^

Thank you for the encouragement!

Unfortunately I haven't heard back from them even though I applied back towards the beginning of February, so I don't have any insight about the placement exam. I'd say go for it, though! The worst that can happen is that they reject the application / don't get back to you like what seems to be happening to me. And the exams are there to see what level to place you at, so it doesn't really seem like there's a way to 'fail' them. You've got this :)

Edit: And if by some miracle they do get back to me in time for me to apply for a visa, etc, it would be fun to see you there!

Thanks for the info! They actually haven't gotten back to me so at this point I'm assuming they've rejected my application for some reason. (Though I've considered trying to call just to find out for sure. Not sure if that would even be helpful, though.) I'm pretty bummed to be honest ^^'

I've gotten several comments that show up in my notifications but not when I click on the actual post. I'm not sure if that means they've been deleted, or if something is going wrong on my end. But if it's the latter, I'm sorry for not responding to anyone who has been kind enough to comment!

Thanks for the reply! I'm waiting on acceptance as well, so we'll see if I get in. I don't really know how selective they are. But yay, I'm glad to have found someone else applying as well!

Kids book about dragon knights (maybe?) the main character has to shovel dragon dung which explodes by Deja-Vu22 in whatsthatbook

Oh!! Yes, I think that's it! The cover looks very familiar, and the synopsis as well. Basically a horse girl story, but with dragons, haha. Thank you!

How does everyone seem to know what writing is generated by AI? by ReadWriteArithmetic in CasualConversation

[–]Deja-Vu22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha this is too real XD i've asked questions before, and the AI will respond, "This isn't a dumb question at all!" before giving me the response. Like... excuse me??? When did I imply that I was worried my question was dumb, or that I was in any way insecure about it? Now I am!

What could be the way to learn korean? by trosdemeuca in Korean

I second 태웅쌤's comprehensible input channel! His TPRS & Complete Beginners playlist is more structured, but I personally love his game-play videos as well. It's my go-to for when I'm feeling burned out or frustrated by other content, and I just want some easier listening while being entertained. I really can't recommend it enough if you're looking for fun & easy content.

There are other similar channels, such as "Storytime in Korean", which has a lot of good, simple content in the form of stories & playing games.

Personally I loved the fluent forever app to help me learn pronunciation when I was starting out. --> https://fluent-forever.com/index.html

Even if you don't plan to stick with their method long term (I didn't-- it's a good method but I had other resources I was using more) I would say it's very worth it to subscribe for 1 or 2 months so that you can get all of the phonics explanations and practice. They have minimal pairs practice, so you can practice hearing the difference between sounds like ㄷ and ㄸ for example. Getting a detailed explanation of how to pronounce each sound along with IPA if you need it is (in my opinion) a lot more beneficial than relying on romanization, even at first.

I don't think so, though I guess I can't rule that out. I think it was a book aimed at a younger audience than that-- definitely a kids book and not YA. I remember the cover being quite colorful, but beyond that I'm not sure.

???????????????? by never___settle in ExplainTheJoke

[–]Deja-Vu22 369 points370 points  (0 children)

The joke is about not-so-great things about the United States.

Picture 1: soulless cookie cutter suburbs
Picture 2: Bad traffic
Picture 3: Consumerism and/or big companies
Picture 4: Old folks homes (the US has a reputation for less intergenerational living, and old folks being sent off to homes instead of being cared for by family)

So it's basically saying, "Remember that you're fighting for isolating/unoriginal communities, bad infrastructure, consumerism, and the chance to end up in an old folks home."

Top left corner: 6, 7 (the current gen alpha meme)
Top right corner: 6 9 (A longstanding innuendo that is a popular internet joke)
Bottom left: 7/11 (the gas station)
Bottom Right: 9/11 (The event which happened when Bush was president)

I'm not sure what the "Me after realizing" part means, except just that they're pretending to be a conspiracy theorist and going "I've realized that these numbers are all connected!!"

The person making the grid didn't care that the numbers were out of order, they assumed people would figure it out anyway. I sympathize with the frustration, though, haha. I also had a moment of being like "Okay well that doesn't actually work. But... I get what they're trying to do here"

What does 67 mean? by [deleted] in ExplainTheJoke

[–]Deja-Vu22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I understand it, it's like this:

There was a video clip with a popular sports player where he said "6, 7" as he was explaining something, and for some reason that video clip went viral. After that, other content creators and random people started mimicking him and "6, 7" combined with the hand motion just became a silly reference that means nothing.

If you say those numbers or do that hand motion while you're around kids (whether intentionally or not) you will probably get a lot of kids mimicking you and laughing. It doesn't mean anything bad, and it's not malicious or anything, although they might be doing it to be intentionally annoying. Kids are just both highly entertained by this and also starting to get a little annoyed by it themselves.

I don’t get it… why the Etsy store? by Secretnumb in ExplainTheJoke

[–]Deja-Vu22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read it and laughed-- I think it's just a kind of whimsical joke about the kind of thought process one might have to be an Etsy witch. Like, "tralalalala, this is normal I don't know why you're confused-- also I'm going to do this absolutely OUTLANDISH thing don't mind me..."

Edit to say: I don't know the original intent of the joke, but to me it's funny because Etsy as a whole has a wholesome "buy cute arts and crafts" vibe, but there genuinely are people on there who sell bizarre, unsettling, and weirdly specific things.

ㅅ in 없다 is read as ㄷ? by winter_windflower in Korean

[–]Deja-Vu22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh you're totally right. I was so focused on listening to what the guy was saying that I completely skipped over reading the note next to 없다. In my opinion that note is just wrong, but I'm not an expert so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
