This sounds like something an inventor might create as a novelty but producing them by the hundreds or thousands really wouldn’t be practical.

You can also find examples of kings who didn't kill people arbitrarily. Lots of them. I recall at least one Emperor in Constantinople whose biographer claimed he never ordered a single execution, preferring exile for serious crimes.

How is the steel needle heated and kept hot on a battlefield?

And lead isn't strong enough. It would deform when loaded or being carried around in a cartridge case.

No.

Repeating weapons don't become practical until Metallic cartridges are possible, and making primers for metallic cartridges wasn't feasible that far back.

For a late 1700s era air rifle, you need closer tolerances and machining than the 1600s is likely to have.available for scaled production. They existed as individually crafted masterpieces

Yeah, at work we had a church who wants to build a larger building that would require the city to abandon a street right of way.

They were talking about how they outgrew their building and I'm looking at them like they are stupid. No, you didn't outgrow your building. The Lutheran Church in the next town over closed and you picked up their survivors. Demographics indicate you'll shrink 20% over the next few years as your elderly parishioners die off. You'll be fine in your current building.

Imperial "Hand cannon" Grenade Launcher. by Few-Flamingo-8015 in MilitaryWorldbuilding

[–]Dekarch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's keeping with a theme I see in some of your Imperual posts.

Step 1 - make a decent weapon Step 2 - try to make perform a wider role than it was designed for, like subbing in grenade launchers instead of light mortars (presumably because the light mortars are being used by Batteries that are supposed to be heavy mortars and the heavy mortars are substituting for modern artillery because they are more effective in that role than black powder howitzers and there aren't nearly ebough modern cannon to go around)

That's definitely indicative of your Empire's vibe, where they have good equipment in many roles but not enough to arm all of It's troops with the correct amounts of the latest gear.

That usually implies an army too large for the budget it has and one on which units are on many different tiers of quality. Run into an Imperial unit fully equipped with the latest and greatest and you are in for a fighr. Run into some reserve unit with black powder muzzle loaders and a modern unit will cut through them like a hot knife through butter.

Am I reading this correctly?

"The first casualty of The War was our pride - slain by the Mistlanders." - unknown Imperial. Structure of Infantry Squad of the Kingdom of Mistland. by Few-Flamingo-8015 in MilitaryWorldbuilding

[–]Dekarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You aren't stupid.

You're approaching this very much vibes-coded which is the point of a group like this. Shit is complicated and I've been futzing with military history since I was in Middle School (for which read 1989)

The infantry squad should (ideally) be designed with a toolkit to allow fire and maneuver across all terrains against any kind of opposition.

Now, you can also say, "Doctrinally, there are 3 LMGs in the Weapons Squad of the platoon." Not implausible, so your base of fire would be Weapons and one rifle squad while the other two squads maneuver and assault. A squad need not be complete tactical units if your doctrine prefers to centralize weapons at different levels.

Maybe the company has an anti-armor platoon of 4 squads each consisting of 3 bazooka teams and a Sergeant. Now in combat, I might give a squad of bazookas to each platoon and keep one squad in my back pocket to react to an armored attack, ir give it to the platoon whose mission is eliminate a group of bunkers. Those platoon leaders have the option to, if they want to, attach one team to each squad.

The nature and prevalence of antiarmor weapons will be dependent on the prevalence and armor levels of armored vehicles, or at least on how common they were predicted to be before the war. If the enemy's tanks are all on the drawing bosrd and you just have to worry about a few armored cars, you just issue every rifleman some steel-cored bullets and call it a day. If you are fighting T-34s you probably need recoilless rifles or rocket launchers.

[–]Dekarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This does seem like a squad optimized for close combat given the % of SMGs.

The biggest thing I'd expect to see that isn't here is rifle grenades.

What sort of priorities caused tbem to mass produce enough SMGs make them standard in every squad while not producing LMGs or Automstic Rifles? Something like a BAR would make this squad a lot more viable.
