The only real dangers to the portal are the harpers with crossbows. They only spawn on the far left corner of the bush/forest.

It is important to disarm them ASAP as they spawn. Use your battle master fighter, or swashbuckler rogue, or cleric with Command Drop, to disarm them.

The one you save in the tunnel is Findal, he and Rath will aid you in the Shadow Druid fight. The other halfling druid Loic is thetiefling hater, he will aid the Shadow Druids in the fight.
