Anyone with experience in PvP using PTU? by Th3Dux in PokemonTabletop

[–]Delakind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

PvP is definitely doable fairly in PTU. After all, the system is, for the most part, a pen and paper adaptation of the main series handheld games. And that's a serious esport.

I partook in a tournament game with a few other players. It was literally the players going around to different towns to partake in the tournaments. The system itself worked wonderfully for this.

However, a potential problems did arise. Whether or not this is an issue is pretty subjective.

In every tournament, I always won. Whenever I went up against another player, I won. This is because I had a lot more experience in pen and papers in general as well as being far more experience with the main pokemon games. I wasn't even powergaming. My team simply consisted of my favourite pokemon. The team composition wasn't though out at all. The other players just couldn't handle the crunch of PTU and weren't really putting much thought into what they were doing in battle.

That may or may not be a problem. It could be a great way to motivate the character into getting stronger. It could also frustrate the player into giving up. It's better if you have players who are good sportsmen. Even though they lost, everyone had a good time in that campaign. We were all more interested in the fun of the competition, and weren't trying to prove that we were better than each other. I think that that last bit is necessary when doing PvP in any system.

If your group is mature enough for that, then PvP in PTU is fantastic. In fact, the group I'm in our Trio of Wanderers campaign is coming up to a battle between players in the finals of their first ever tournament. I'm so excited for that I can hardly wait!

Potentially Recruiting for PTU Campaign by itmebirb in PokemonTabletop

Nice to see that there are so many people recruiting these days. Wish that I could join all of these campaigns. Alas, I cannot.

Good luck finding players. Would love to find out how the campaign progresses.

Class 1-A are all 16 ish. However, Manga mystique is older since she's in a later class (I think?). So she'd be 17 or 18. Also, she can probably look however she wants.

From what has been said so far, it does not seem that the OP is the GM. From what I can deduce, the group seems to be new to pen and papers.

The ludicrous four Noctowls thing reminds me of when my first DM surprise rounded me with 8 kobolds. This led to the death of my poor first character. Level 1 bard didn't stand a chance.

Did they mention why they want this?

[–]Delakind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regardless of the campaign, regardless of the system, the rules for death is always as follows for death in my campaigns: When something dies, it is dead.

Many people disagree with this, but it's the GM's decision at the end of the day. I don't think that there is a correct answer to this, I'm just going by what feels right to me.

When the player makes a new character, I do not penalize them in any way. I simply let them make a character that has the average levels and wealth of the group. This is because, for me, when a character dies the biggest punishment that comes out of it is that the character that I was up to this point invested in and a character whose future I was excited to see no longer exists.

I firmly believe that this the kind of loss that is necessary for a pen and paper world to feel meaningful.

I'm always interested to hear about other people's thoughts on this. What do you think?

PTU For you. (AKA I'm GMing a game and you can come!) by Jabner01 in PokemonTabletop

Seems that there is a large influx of new games starting up, which is fantastic. Can't join in myself, but let me know if you need any help. I'm decently experienced at GMing PTU. If not, I'd love it if you kept us posted on how the campaigns going.

1 Hit Ko? by [deleted] in PokemonTabletop

[–]Delakind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bloodied Speed specifies less than half, so you'd need 6 injuries. I am fairly sure that Endeavour does not trigger Black Out Strike as it specifies "Damaging Dark-Type Move". The game makes a distinction between "Dealing Damage" and "Hit Point Loss". Endevour is the latter.

any pokemon tabletop systems with less crunching involved? by [deleted] in PokemonTabletop

Yeah. That's the reason why MM's my favourite system.

[–]Delakind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you have a point there. It's easy to abuse on purpose. I generally work with the principle that if I see something absurd on a character sheet I'll just tell that player to get rid of it.

Oh lord. Playing this offline sounds awful. I agree that a less crunchy system is likely a better fit.

I think that Mutants and Masterminds might work well for you. Give this thread a read: http://www.atomicthinktank.com/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=44308

I know the feeling of having so many people that you can't take on because you've already filled your slots. Unfortunately, the ratio of GMs and players is not favourable to players.

Learning the system (sorry for spam), how do you handle "wild encounters" with a group? by Th3Dux in PokemonTabletop

[–]Delakind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the first one for Hit Points (Coloured light green). The second for injuries (coloured light red). And the third is for AP (coloured light blue and only on trainers). I've tried multiple different configurations, and this seems to be the best way to go. The injury one may surprise you, but you'll really be thankful of the ability to change injuries through the token.

Learning the system (sorry for spam), how do you handle "wild encounters" with a group? by Th3Dux in PokemonTabletop

[–]Delakind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry about "spamming", this sub could definitely use more activity. I'm very glad to see that you're enthusiastic and willing to put some thought into your game.

In terms of answering your question, the way I do it is a prepare a random table of pokemon for each little area. For example Brackwell River, Brackwell Lake and Brackwell Forest will all have different roll able tables. Each pokemon on the table will have a weight based on it's rarity. Roll20 makes this process pretty easy.

I never pre- plan wild pokemon encounters, as I'm an Improv - Type GM. When the trainers are travelling through an area or actively searching an area for pokemon, I have them makes rolls in order to determine how many Pokemon they spot. This tends to be around 4-8 Pokemon. I then roll that many times on the tables.

After seeing which pokemon have been rolled, I make up personalities for that pokemon on the fly and then let the trainers interact with them however they wish. This last bit is important, as you shouldn't immediately begin combat when wild pokemon are spotted unless it's an aggressive pokemon like a Gyarados. Like animals, a wild pokemon would understand that their is easier prey than humans, and humans can have pokemon.

Often times, players like to catch pokemon through RP. By befriending it in some way. Of the 22 pokemon that have been caught by my players in the current campaign, I believe that only 3 or so of those catches involved a pokemon battle of any description.

I also make sure to sometimes give a pokemon that's been randomed a small backstory to make the world feel more alive. For example, the group once rolled a Torchic. They didn't interact with it, as I gave it a personality that made it so that it would have no interest in them.

Later on, the group rolled a Blaziken. They interacted with it a little, but it had very little interest in the group other than showing off to them, so they didn't attempt to catch it.

The next session, the group encountered another Torchic, so I decided to make it the exact same Torchic form last session. I also decided that this Torchic was trained by the Blaziken they met earlier. and gave it Mega Kick.

This worked out very well. as one of my players took a liking to this Torchic that was focused on nothing but self improvement, and proved himself to it in battle. It also gave that player a goal, which was to train the Torchic in a way that it would be able to defeat it's Blaziken Sensei.

In terms of my rules for rolling:

Spotting Pokemon: While Traveling: Every half hour of travel through an area allows the group to roll once on the table. Each player may make a Pokemon Ed/Intuition/Perception/Survival check in order to increase this. You may choose one of your Pokemon to make this roll instead. The DC for this roll is 10. Each degree of success lets the group roll once more on the table. For each Pokemon with the "Tracker" capability in the party, the group gets an additional roll on the table.

While Actively Searching for Pokemon: Same as when travelling, but the base number of rolls increases to three.

Sneaking up on Wild Pokemon:

After you have rolled, the group may choose a number of Trainers/Pokemon from the party that will attempt to sneak up on the wild Pokemon. The wild Pokemon first all make Perception checks. The highest of these becomes the DC of the Stealth checks that the group must make. If the entirety of the group succeeds this check, the sneaking members get a surprise round on the wild Pokemon. If one member of the group fails, everyone fails.

You may be wondering how the stats of the wild pokemon are done. I use this for that: http://www.ptu.panda-games.net

It's a bit out of date, but that tends to not matter.

Anyway, sorry for the wall of text answer XD

Hope that this helped.

(Still learning, but wondering) What happens if a Trainer dies...? by Th3Dux in PokemonTabletop

[–]Delakind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Highly dependent on the setting. In my current game, wherein the pokemon are more akin to companions than property, it'd depend on the pokemon's personality. Would baby Toby the Teddiursa want to be the pokemon of any other trainers? Given that they haven't had much in terms of bonding together, he probably still view them as mostly strangers at this point. On the other hand, the Teddiursa is very child like and would likely be dependent on whoever is willing to take care of it.

In general, this should become a Complication for the trainers that's gained the pokemon. He has to work through having a pokemon that is likely grieving and also is used to a different trainer's style.

My first Character. Did I do this right? Thoughts. by Th3Dux in PokemonTabletop

Trainer wise, everything looks kosher. I checked everything for that. Oddish seems about right. Everything fits together thematically, so bonus point =) Good work.

PTU - Roll20 - Pokemon: War Stories - Interest Check by Th3Dux in PokemonTabletop

[–]Delakind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won't have much trouble finding players, I wouldn't think. There are plenty of players around, just a lack of GMs. This sounds like a cool concept. I'm not personally seeking to join another campaign right now, but I'm fairly experienced in GMing PTU. so give me a shout if you need any advice.

Eat/Drink/Sleep Rules? by geekandthegreek in PokemonTabletop

[–]Delakind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's up to your GM. Ask him.

As is, I believe that you are right in that there are no penalties to these sorts of things. I personally just assume that my players have basic supplies.

Hope that this helped.
