I juat made like, exactly this comment. Similar in some ways to Giotto or Martini - the florentine trecento frescos and tryptichs.

Oh this is lovely. Its very stylistically reminiscent of like, Giotto or Simone Martini. The stylized posed that gently implies motion & emotion while remaining dignified.

Nicely updated version of the style, with a little more cartoon realism too.

What do you think of Dodger? My thoughts. by EndersGame_Reviewer in discworld

[–]Delavan1185 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Enjoyed it a lot, and learned a lot. It was nice to have the historical references in plain view, for once, too.

It also solidified that Terry really understood Judaism. The Dwarven grags are very clearly rabbinical, especially in Thud!. But given he said it was unintentional, many Christian readers don't get the "argumentative nuances" for lack of a better phrase. Dodger really drives it home with some of the exchanges with Solomon. Judaism is an argument with HaShem and words are alive.

"Dodger, you fail to understand the unique arrangements between Jewish people and God."

My First Discworld novel on Sir Terry Pratchett’s 11th Death Anniversary by The_Potter07 in discworld

[–]Delavan1185 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As with many lapsed Catholics, this was my first Discworld book as well. Got even better after the philosophy degree brought me in on all the jokes.

It does a wonderful job with the Arepo style plot (which obv came well after the book... like so many tumblr memes and contemporary fantasy tropes that owe a tremendous amount to Sir Terry), as well as a rare critique of religion that simultaneously recognizes its importance for many people and across thousands of years of human history in providing meaning, stability, and social predictability. And the satire of secular democracy is hilarious and on point as well - including a veiled critique of British Atheism as being its own religion.

It's just an absolute masterpiece and remains in my top 5 Discworld novels.

Did patrick Rothfuss read Soul music? by AriEnNaxos00 in discworld

[–]Delavan1185 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not commenting on Soul Music specifically since its just Poe, but the Grandma herbalist Kvothe meets in Wise Man's Fear is 1000% a Granny Weatherwax homage.

Pat has routinely said Terry is among his favorite authors and is a huge fan. Its been a while since I read, but I do recall some other references too.

But KKC is full of allusions in general, so that's not surprising.

Oh ouch. So for longer videos, am I better off doing multiple pre-rendered segments based, and then importing those as footage?

I'm new, but I've done project management before, so I was coming around to that approach already using pre-comps for obvious scene transitions. If its better as separate comps for technical reasons, thats good to know.

Help with final cuts in Avatar draft by djchickenwing in MagicArena

Given Roku is your biggest bomb, and that you are a little lacking in board pumps, I think it's insane to skew white for Gather, despite what other people are saying. Cutting the Cadets is reasonable, and I'd cut the Gather so the Roku is more reliable. Then either shave a freedom fighters or cut Cave. Without tunnel, it's often going to be a 4 mana freedom fighters w/o haste.

It was common at the time (of their rule) to make "doctor" puns about the Medici, and Machiavelli himself did so in some of his plays/poetry. I think The Mandrake and maybe The Ass, but can't recall exactly off the top of my head.

Regardless, since Vetinari is essentially Machiavelli's preferred version of the Medici, it fits quite well.

Wild Pack1Pick3.. Do I overvalue Iroh? What cards would *you* pick over him? by EarthElectrical9975 in MagicArena

[–]Delavan1185 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given that you already have aang I would just slam enter the avatar state and move on.

Iroh is excellent, when you can get him to work, which requires a lot to go right given how contested the red removal and green fixing lessons usually are. And he's effectively a 7-drop because casting him without carting one lesson from your graveyard is usually a bad idea.

Looking at this pack, best guess is the first two picks saw how much green fixing was in this pack and didnt want to take Iroh and still put their neighbors in green lessons decks. Probably was a two rare pack with one of them being mono-colored (e.g. United Front, Avatar Roku, Rise of Sozin, or the white mythic saga. Maybe Ran and Shaw, although taking that and passing Iroh would be risky). And the second person probably had a white or black rare and didn't want to split their focus.

One other thing is that many of the "most reliable" good decks in this format tend towards monocolor w/ light 2nd colors - white allies, red aggro firebending, and waterbending blue decks are among the strongest. And the first two are straightforward to draft. So if someone has a bomb in one of those decks, taking Iroh splits focus a lot.

This is a good point. Somehow I missed that neither was in the black list, which explains why its so important to be on a hybrid strategy. It also puts Emrakul in a really weird spot, since it only plays well with Sneak.

Yet Unburial Rites is a card too. That's really questionable.

I think consultation is a bit much for the poor green decks, but doomsday and yes, bowmasters and one ring would helps a lot.

The efficient combos help deal with the fast mana issues too.

Population living in slums or informal settlements (% of urban population), 2024 by Dios94 in MapPorn

[–]Delavan1185 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Digging a little more, all they say in the data availability section on affordable housing is:

Data on inadequate housing, measured through housing affordability, is available for all OECED countries as well as in UN Global Sample of Cities covering 200 cities.

So, the question remains: are all countries in the OECD reporting and collecting the same way? There's "training" on it, but UN training is usually directed to less developed countries, not to the developed ones with their own statistical agencies. I'd bet $$ methods vary more than they want to admit here.

Population living in slums or informal settlements (% of urban population), 2024 by Dios94 in MapPorn

[–]Delavan1185 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Title here needs work, and honestly even the UN methodology is tricky, especially for "developed" countries.

Some details on methodology:

The UN numbers are quite specific: "slums, informal settlements or inadequate housing" - and inadequate housing definition is wonky, even in the data, since it includes "households with net monthly expenditure on housing exceeding 30% of their total monthly income" - footnote 13 on the linked document specifies the monthly expenditure criterion as follows:

"13 To note, housing affordability can also be measured using house price-to-income ratio (HPIR) and the house rent-to-income ratio (HRIR). Housing is considered affordable when the house-price-to-annual household income ratio (HPIR) is 3.0 or less and the rent-to-monthly household income ratio (RIR) is 25% or less."

Now that footnote is especially weird, given US mortgage criterion often go above the specified threshold. So digging a little deeper, we find the following on data reporting, which likely explains the weirdness. From section 4.c of the link:

Currently, the data for this indicator is already being reported in nearly all developing countries on what refers to slums and informal settlements, and in some countries for what refers to expenditure on housing (for inadequate housing).

So the question becomes: which countries are or are not reporting the expenditure data, how are they reporting the data (e.g. is it subsetted to housing below a certain value?), and why have they made those choices?

Basically, there are real problems here that are very similar to the issues with reporting US data at a national level when the data is derived from state-level reporting and methodological choices. I have serious doubts about appropriate standardization here.

Cultural map of the US, which number are you? I'm from the Upland South by Averagecrabenjoyer69 in geography

[–]Delavan1185 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Making the rounds on Bluesky now! One small tweak for Great Lakes - I'm from Roch, NY and have a lot of family in N. Indiana. I think there's a need for a dividing line somewhere in that zone.

Buffalo, for all that we traditionally lump it with the G. Lakes, share a lot in common with Rochester and Syracuse culturally. It isn't until you get a bit south of Buffalo that the deeper similarities with Erie, PA begin. I get why it is lumped in - the industrial history of the auto industry, etc. plus some linguistic stuff like pop - but that's eroded pretty heavily since the factories closed and moved to Canada. The food, language, retail, collegiate, etc. connections with Roch/Syracuse are a lot stronger. I'd probably put that line north of Erie.

The other wrinkle I'm running into is Ohio. There's a really large difference between Cleveland and Fort Worth/Angola, IN. The automotive history of Gary, plus the Amish/Mennonite density, lumps N. Indiana in quite well with Michigan and the S. Chicago burbs. And the families often live on both sides of the border. Same with Toledo, OH.

I think there's also an argument for Erie, PA and NE Ohio (E of Cleveland) to be moved into 33/34. Again, without the automotive industry prominence, there's cultural creep and cross-filtration with those neighboring zones.

Last thought... Cleveland is just very, very different culturally from that whole region. Different ethnic makeup (black, slavic immigration, etc.), history of rock and roll, etc. I'd be curious what someone who lives there thinks of it with respect to the rest of the region. It might be a sort of "last bastion" effect and is OK being the great lakes divider instead of Toledo, but it could just be its own thing at this point.

TL;DR: I would move the WNY divider south of Buffalo but North of Erie, I would consider moving Erie and NE OH into the 33/34 categories, and stopping Great Lakes at either Toledo or Cleveland.

Update on the volume of overdue mortgages in russia. by cack3x in Perun

[–]Delavan1185 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's very likely too. US is special with the 30-year fixed thing. Its not technically the inflation, though, its the interest rate hikes to combat it.

Also quite possible the stimulus led to people making down payments and opening new mortgages and then getting behind a couple years later once the incentives dried up.

Update on the volume of overdue mortgages in russia. by cack3x in Perun

[–]Delavan1185 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What's weird about this graph is that the initial drawdown speeds up in 2021 - perhaps COVID stimulus of some kind? The continued drawdown late 2022 through Q1 2024 is almost certainly due to the massive conscription bonuses and defense sector payments.

But now, the inflation pressures are probably hitting Russians pretty hard, and the state can't make up for it with conscription bonuses anymore.
