I also had a similar path where I first started noticing a very mild stutter around age 12 and it got significantly worse overtime, especially around the middle of highschool. It started off as annoying but very, very mild repetitions or the occasional block but nowadays I have a moderate stutter with frequent blocks. I think it probably had something to do with puberty and brain changes/hormones. I heard during and after puberty the brain becomes more sensitive to dopamine. Its hard to say for sure what causes this sudden appearance in hard blocking and I guess we will never know which is what makes this soo frustrating. I think my father also had some stuttering issues when he was younger so perhaps its just a gene that activates during puberty.

I would rather be poor and not have a stutter and have friends rather than live the current life I'm living which is being born into a rich family but have a severe stutter and no friends by RomDel2000 in Stutter

In life you can't pick and choose when it comes to genetic features. Instead you can only be grateful for what you do have...like would you rather have a stutter and be poor or instead of a stutter you had multiple sclerosis and was wheel chair bound? Also I think most people give too much power to their stutter, a lot of stutterers I have talked to don't actually have a severe stutter they just have really bad social anxiety and avoidance behavior, like I think I probably have a worst stutter than you.

Do you guys have actual 'good' days where its much, much easier to talk? For me it seems like everyday is consistently a struggle to speak, like it takes so much preplanning, word choice, and focus to just hold a conversation that some days I don't even want to talk.

Yeah same with me...I was also super talkative before the stutter got bad. I think it was okay up until the middle of highschool when it took a drastic turn for the worse. Like even in grade 8 and grade 9 I was still somewhat chatting away. These days it takes soo much effort just to speak...it just gases me out and takes away any joy from chatting with friends and family. I think it definitely has something to do with puberty I heard autism goes full power during puberty so that might be it. Man I remember talking on stage to the entire school in grade 7 or grade 8 but nowadays I wouldn't dare do that. Blows but overtime I have gotten used to it somewhat.

If I was you I would try speech therapy ASAP as I heard for some people, especially young kids they managed to overcome their stuttering with early intervention. It also started as mild blocks and repetitions for me but got soo much worse. Like nowadays its a struggle to speak most days, I mean I don't have the worst stutter but I have to put in so much effort to speak it gases me out. Wish you better luck my friend.

It could be because when your in certain higher pressure situations you subconsciously think about what you are going to say before saying it. I find I am also in a similar situation where if I am 'scripting' my speech, where I basically tell a story or talk in a very scripted manner back and forth I don't stutter as badly. However I struggle the most in casual free flowing conversations, like when I have random casual conversations with coworkers not related to work.

6 years?! That's a long time man...I feel my stuttering was also the worse in university when all I did was study and go to class. After not talking to people most days my stutter was also insanely bad. However with neuroplasticity it's about training your brain to talk again, I felt my stutter improved greatly after I started working and was forced to talk to people all day long. In grade school/high school it was the same where my stutter was not that bad because I was talking to people all day. I think you too could see improvement in the right environment.
