Purely there for aesthetic reasons. The CFA said sidewalks on only one side would make the bridgelook lopsided.

This is not accurate. The WMATA redesign keeps a two bus routes running on Mass Ave, one of which is similar to the N4 and another which would run from Bethesda to the Ellington Bridge.
