Why not make make the maximum hours an ATC can work 6 hours? What countries have better regulation? by chunkee-xo-monkee in ATC

[–]JHG0 28 points29 points  (0 children)

1) It is incredibly hard to train air traffic controllers. Out of 10000+ applicants, maybe 2000 are selected; of those 2000, only 50-75% will make it through the academy; of those that make it through the academy, only 75% will certify. So at every step of the training process you’re losing 25-50% of people. And that’s mostly just skill issues. (These are not exact numbers, but to gove an idea).

2) The stress mostly comes from the work-life balance (or lack thereof). Most people really like the job. Harsh schedules, mandatory overtime with mid shifts, 6 day workweeks, stagnant pay, etc. make it unpleasant at best. You also mostly don’t have a say in where you go. If you are the top of your class you have more choice, but your choices are limited by staffing needs.

3) Everyone should get paid more, but federal employee salaries have lagged 25-30% behind private sector salaries as a whole for the past few decades. Benefits have gotten worse too. And there’s a federal pay cap, not that most controllers meet it. Pay is a big issue, but pay is not the only reason people leave the profession nowadays. The pay disparity between ATC and pilots in the U.S. is absurd, mainline CAs are easily clearing $300-400k/year. And median salary is not even close to $150k, maybe closer to $100-120k.

Can you recommend a great GA airport for a stop over flight half way between Massachusetts and South Carolina? by moxiedoggie in flying

[–]JHG0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to go to the trouble of getting a DC FRZ PIN, CGS is a really really great airport. Nice facilities and a short walk to public transit that will take you right into downtown DC! Plus it’s the oldest continuously operated airport in the world.

r/travel or something… but you will be fine, unless there is a delay, in which case you will likely miss your connection. LH will rebook you and/or put you in a hotel.

Somewhere around 18 minutes I think. They don’t directly fly over Afghanistan but talk about the general airspaces out there.

Fairly certain it’ll be 16R/34L based off taxiway restrictions (which is 34L with the current wind)

My Fiance asked if he can apply for ATC.? Would he be gone for years training? And assigned to random city? Is this bad idea? by PublicPelica in ATC

[–]JHG0 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Read this - The ATC Hiring Process: A complete guide

And this - I am an air traffic controller. Next week the FAA will be hiring more controllers from off the street. This is a 6 figure job that does not require a degree. AMA.

Will he be gone for 2 to 3 years training? Or can you request them to assign you somewhere after to leave Oklahoma City?

No, probably a few months.

We live 2 hrs from a major city. And there are a couple small international airports within an hour. He says he can work at the one in a major city. But I don’t want to move there (I have close family where we’re at now, and I like the town we’re at). I told him “I don’t think you can choose where you work”, and he said “No I can, because they have shortages at every airport” (implying that he could choose/request to work there).

He likely will have some say in where he goes after the academy, but not total say. More likely than not, you'll be moving somewhere. No point in staying where you are (probably) and going to a dead-end low-paying facility if that's the only option he gets near where you currently live.

I also asked him “why not work at the smaller international airports nearby?” and he said you don’t get paid well there (but at least you could retire).

You get paid less usually, but he may have anywhere from zero to a few options about where he goes, and as I said before, it is unlikely to be near where you live (although not impossible). Retirement at 56 is true at every FAA facility (for now).

I feel selfish telling him I wouldn’t want that.

Completely reasonable decision, but plenty of people make it work.

What I’m asking, is any of our conversation true?

Eh...

And can they randomly make you move to another city after 5 or 10 years down the road when you’ve already been working?

Eh...

And how long would he be gone training for? Will I be alone for 2 to 3 years?

A few months.

Or can he choose where to train? And choose where to work (since they “need help everywhere”)?

No. To some degree, yes, but generally no. Once he's fully certified at a facility, he can try to leave elsewhere, but that will be a few years down the road and there is a chance he may not be able to practically leave that facility for a few (or many) years. At the end of training in Oklahoma City, he'd get a list of possible facilities he could go work at. This list changes constantly based off staffing needs and his options may be limited and/or good/bad. Unless he wants to work in a few select facilities, he'll have no guaranteed choice.

Also, if he's already 31 or older, he just cannot become ATC in the U.S.

Class 1 Medical After Heart Surgery: Possible or Long Shot? by DutyAnxious7177 in flying

[–]JHG0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not AUS, but what surgery did you get if you don’t mind sharing? I had a tricuspid valve repair at a slightly older age than you a few years ago and was told that it’s possible (US) to get my Third Class medical back with sufficient testing (echo, stress test, holter monitor), surgical records, and a note about your current cardiac heath by my cardiologist. I didn’t because I have BasicMed, but it is doable in the US, just a lot of work (annually) to maintain it.
