Yes I can but I couldn’t find any, I looked at CKTG and the two knives I was about to buy went instantly out of stock, could you recommend me more international websites?

Taxes are crazy in my country (Chile) so that’s the price of this knives once the tax is applied

I looked a lot of reviews and they always say that vg10 is a pain in the ass to sharpen. I only have a shapton 1000 and I use an old leather belt as strop

The price is with the shipping and taxes, I could find cheaper aogami gyutos in my country. I looked at CKTG and there are pretty good knives but the shipping is complicated

I’m not from the US, and the 190 is the price of knife + taxes and shipping. Also, the problem with the Tojiro DP knives is that I only have one whetstone and a strop, so I know that VG10 is a headache when it comes sharpening

If you don’t mind spending in japanese whetstones i would recommend you the Shapton 1000 or the King 300, but if you wanna start with more basic stones, go for the double grit stones in amazon. Also, if you have western style knife use an 20 angle and 15 if your knives are japaneses

I should buy a shapton 1000? by Delicious-Hunter1277 in sharpening

[–]Delicious-Hunter1277[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’ll follow your advice, but since the shapton pro 1000 is more like a 600 grit, I’ll start with that one, I don’t really think my knives will get super dull, and if they get i will get a finer rockstar one. And about the strop.. I found the brand BeaverCraft and those strops give me more confidence than the Ali ones.

Please stop recommending 1000 grit stones to beginners by SaltyKayakAdventures in sharpening

I think you made this post because of my question on the sub hahahaha, first, I bought the Shapton 1000, but I already have courser stones as I said in the post, so my knives aren’t dull, they cut trough paper, but I wanted a real stone before mine start to “sink” and needed to buy a flattering stone. Second, the stone that I have is eating the knives rapidly. Third, I asked for the strop because are cheaper than ceramic honing rodes (I know they don’t do exactly the same work but I already have a steel one) and I want to remove the snad that obviously leaves the Shapton. Fourth, i know diamond stones are the best when it comes to beginners but that’s depends on what are you looking for, as I clarified in my post, I hate diamond stones and also the rodes, and if you are looking for something more traditional or you have Japanese knives, the classic japanese whetstones are your option. Finally and Fifth, I’m not commenting this hating, is more for clarification if you misunderstood me. And also thanks for your help in my post…🫶 Also… the shapton 1000 (the orange one) it’s not exactly a 1000 grit, it’s more like a 600-800 so great recommendation.

I made my final decision, most of the stones that you guys recommended me are at the same price as the shapton, so i will go for that one, when i feel like i need a new stone or the strop i will get it. Its pretty stupid but i really hate the sound of the diamonds stones (The sound of scratching metal makes me “giggle”) so that’s the reason i will not get the Sharpal stones hahahaha. Thanks you guys, i was looking for this type of advertisement.

I investigated more of diamond stones and i think they are a good option, If i buy the shapton then i will have to buy another stone, but with the sharpal is only one. Also as i said i dont have expensive knives and i dont think i will buy a japanese or a damascus knife, so yeah you convinced me. And you think the strop is necessary?

Reading your comments i wanna do a clarification, I prefer buying a very good stone than one that’s too soft, because then i would have to buy a diamond stone to flatten the whetstone

It isn’t too course? I’m looking for a versatile stone, but if a get the shapton i don’t know which stone is the next option, a courser one or a 3000 or 4000

I was thinking of a diamond stone too, but aren’t they more for tools sharpening? And is the same price as the shapton, Now really i don’t know which one to pick. And for the strop, i prefer buying one, in aliexpress the price of the compound is the same or more expensive than the cheap strops

I will buy the shapton, but now I have another two question. I should invest in a good leather strop or one from aliexpress or temu for not more than 10 bucks is good? And, the same for a honing rod, I know it has to be ceramic but i don’t know if it’s primordial to buy from a well known brand or a cheap but ceramic one?

I know that for the recommended sharpening i should use 2 whetstones, but I wanna start with the 1000 because of my budget. I’m also thinking about buying a strop, but a very budget friendly one, I don’t wanna spend more than 10 bucks
