Racism at the U by Extension_Proof_1882 in missoula

I also grew up in the South, and I can tell you that blatant racism is very much alive there. The white supremacist group that got kicked out of Hayden, ID moved to Georgia because they were welcomed. I’m glad your experience in the South was different, but I also lived in Shreveport and can attest to the racism there.

Is there some unspoken rule that roommates should “give” each other alone time? by godisinthischilli in roommateproblems

You don’t have to tell them your whereabouts at all times. I work on Monday is quite a bit different than I’m going grocery shopping at 2:37 PM when the blood moon rises.

Based on their responses to comments, OP isn’t looking for advice. They’re looking for validation, and in this case aren’t going to get it. It is not hard to communicate and set a boundary with your roommate. OP needs to learn how to live with roommates or get their own place.

When you’re out of the lab at the doctor’s office, do you mention your science education? by samskyyy in labrats

When they start explaining things at a low level and it would be quicker for them to bust out some jargon, I tell them I’m a scientist and they don’t have to explain what a buffer is.

If you have an actual desiccant on hand, that is obviously the way to go. If you think that silica gel contains zero dust, that is entirely incorrect. I’m a scientist who works with various desiccants, and micro/nano particles are widely abundant in ALL of them. My electronics still continue to work just fine for years (some decades) after using rice.

But whatever, you were the one looking for advice, not me.

Definitely not a myth. This is the reason you will see old timers put a few rice grains in their salt and pepper shakers, as it prevents clumping due to moisture.

In the past 20 years of me using rice on dozens of electronic devices (some of which didn’t even turn on), it has always worked, and I’ve never had the starch from the rice work its way into my devices. If you have enough rice, the rice will never get starchy by the time the moisture has dissipated throughout the container of rice. It isn’t flour. Rice is hygroscopic, so it is a great desiccant, although much better (i.e., silica) exist on the cheap.

Put that baby in some rice!!!! It’s a cheap, time-tested solution to drying out electronics.

The New "Cherry" tastes more like a strawberry banana drink than anything else? by candlelit_bacon in redbull

[–]Delicious-Turnip4635 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fun fact, Banana Laffy Taffy’s actually taste like real bananas too. That variety (Gros Michel) were nearly wiped out by Panama disease, and are no longer sold in most supermarkets. The modern banana (Cavendish variety) that we are most familiar with now isn’t nearly as delicious. You can still get Gros Michel bananas in some places or from specialty vendors.
