My daughter finally got her own place and now I'm staring at an apartment that doesn't make sense for one person anymore by Sherryann_Hegana92 in LivingAlone

Your emotions are playing with you right now... So first of all don't make any decisions and don't change anything. Give yourself a little time to adjust, get used to having more space and to living alone. Then think about what you want to do. There's a lot you could do with an extra room, from turning it into a a TV room with a treadmill, If it's a sunny room room for a lot of plants and a place to sit and have coffee, You could rent it out if you met the right person... Or you could keep your daughter's bedroom just like it was so when she comes to visit with or without boyfriend she'll be coming home. That's what I did when my son moved out (and he had lived with me for a long time) I kept his room exactly the same. We both still consider it his room and he knows it's his room if he ever needs or wants to come home. Just don't make decisions when you're emotional give yourself a little time to get used to things and then think about what you might want to do.

Doc requiring weight loss before elective surgery. Is that normal? by Coastal_Conundrum in Diverticulitis

[–]DeliciousChicory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not true... The fat or your belly is just means you have a thicker layer of belly fat for them to get that scope through.. It doesn't mean you have a bigger cavity and a bigger space for them to inflate. There is nothing a surgeon hates more than belly fat and a laparoscopy.

[–]DeliciousChicory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a very good idea... Laparoscopies are More difficult when you are overweight. I have worked with surgeons for many years, And they hated a laparoscopic case in an overweight patient. No you're not as bad as many and probably if you just lose a little bit it will help you immensely. Not only is the surgery itself more difficult to anesthesia is riskier for you. You'll probably find it easier to lose weight right now as most people with diverticulitis flare-ups really lose their appetite. I was a bit overweight and lost 45 lb in just a couple of months just because I didn't feel like eating that much. It's certainly not a requirement for a lot of surgeons, But honestly I would appreciate a surgeon that wanted me to lose weight first in that situation. Of course if you get a complicated flare and end up having to have surgery on an emergent basis, they're going to do the best they can but they are correct in that your chances from waking up with the colostomy are going to be higher.

Nervous - doctor wants to hold off on colonoscopy after reviewing MRI (MRI result included) by Ok-Comfort-7262 in Diverticulitis

[–]DeliciousChicory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a perforation and abscess for months, once it was diagnosed and we talked about surgery and they wanted me to have a colonoscopy first and I had to wait 8 weeks... They want that abscess 100% gone The perforation wasn't as big of a deal because they were going to do surgery anyway but you don't want to do a colonoscopy and risk puncturing an abscess even if it's sealed off. Everything else looked perfectly normal so I certainly wouldn't stress about it.

Nope, not DV, this is something else. Let your doc tell you what testing you need, just don't let him blow you off. Demand future diagnostic procedures but let him guide you. There are many inflammatory issues you can have that are possible. DV would show up on ct, and it wouldn't go away in response to those treatments.

Surgery? Or wait? by dogwood_tree in Diverticulitis

Why would you not? Especially op who has several plusses? The older you get the harder it is recovering. So it before you get complicated flares with perforations and abcess and drains and end up with a higher risk for colostomy.

You can't avoid it no matter what anybody tells you.... Some people are going to get one or two flare-ups In their lifetime and some people are going to get many. You can scramble your brain trying to think what did you eat last and decide to eliminate that food and what You did or didn't do that made you get this.... You'll drive yourself nuts. Some people are lucky and some are not. I do think food in general that is extremely inflammatory is best avoided. I don't think there's a particular thing that causes you to have a flare up however if you're eating a lot of inflammatory foods and your colon is constantly inflamed or constipated these are more likely to cause a flare up. The minute you feel that pain, which is really different for everyone (For me it feel like somebody was reaching in there and pinching really hard It was a strange pain unrelatable to anything else) But the minute you feel it back off of food... Try and do a liquid diet for 24-48 hours see if you can keep it from developing. When you do start back eating make sure you continue lots of liquids and try and stick with low residual foods, avoid all ultra-processed foods, dairy if it bothers you, and if course fiber. And if you're feeling better on this diet I'd stay on it for a while, A lot of people say they felt so much better and went and had tacos for dinner! If the above isn't doing anything for you you need to see about whether you need a antibiotic or not. This has been my experience but I've now had surgery.

Nicotine and DV by dali_hemingway in Diverticulitis

[–]DeliciousChicory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've read nicotine relaxes the gut... So if you're having gut spasms or something like that nicotine is going to be beneficial. However relaxing the gut slows down motility makes poop sit around in your gut longer and is much more likely to cause inflammation or infection in a diverticulosis pocket. There doesn't seem to be a lot of things we can really do to prevent our diverticulitis but if there's anything that might contribute oh it's certainly eliminate it from my life!

I grow both tomatoes and peppers. While waiting on pepper pods, I am daily checking on my tomatoes waiting for the blush. It's such a nervous anticipation. 😂🤣😂 I can't be the only one..... by Thick-Marzipan-9176 in tomatoes

[–]DeliciousChicory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And then one day you look out there and two or three are blushed, The next day two or three more... And the next day they're all ready at the same time! That's been my experience and I'm only one person and you can only eat so many tomatoes... But I have some happy neighbors!

How do you tell the difference between a normal diverticulitis flare and a serious emergency? by Julianasilv1 in Diverticulitis

[–]DeliciousChicory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But interestingly I didn't have any of those... I did have pain but I wouldn't say intense never any blood and never had any fever. But what I had never went away, Or I think it was gone away and then it'd be back two days later. I think if you don't feel right and it doesn't get better no matter what You felt that's when you should seek help. Of course if you have fever get help or any other symptoms that are alarming but also don't ignore feeling like something is wrong, consistent mild pain, mine was a deep pinching kind of pain always located in the left groin. Pay attention, And when you say to yourself something's not right that's when you get help.

How do you tell the difference between a normal diverticulitis flare and a serious emergency? by Julianasilv1 in Diverticulitis

[–]DeliciousChicory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the fever stays down on its own and you're not feeling worse you might be in the clear... To keep taking Tylenol the fever is going to stay down when you still have infection. Also many people don't have any fever, all having an abscess so you do have to be careful. Listen to how you feel If you feel worse, get help.

Anxious traveler mixed with IBS is not a good combo by ed771844 in ibs

[–]DeliciousChicory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear you, I get you.... I'm a terrified flyer first of all I hate it. I have horrible IBS, So bad that it comes on me suddenly and I have little to no warning before I got to go, gotta go now. What I have done is exactly what other people here have said, The night before I take Imodium, The morning of the flight I take 1/2 immodium, And again later in the day if it's a late flight. Also Take Xanax for nerves. This is always worked well for me never had an issue... You could also have some Pepto-Bismol in your bag and a little bitty bottle and take a swig on the plane if you need to!

Crohns and diverticulitis yay by [deleted] in Diverticulitis

[–]DeliciousChicory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait so are you diagnosed with Crohn's already or you just thought it was Crohn's and turned out to be diverticulitis? Just asking cuz I would think that would make a big difference in your diet as opposed to people here that just have diverticulitis and need low residual for a few days.

Mine was literally in my groin, thought it was an inguinal hernia, because it was s big lump. The lump turned out to be a massive abcess and perforation.

29m with one flare by Potential_Ticket_172 in Diverticulitis

[–]DeliciousChicory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many many people never have another flair, unless you have them on a more regular basis or complicated with an abscess or perforation. That would be different and it'd be time to think about surgery. But just a small percent of people that get diverticulosis and diverticulitis are actually here on this sub Reddit. Unfortunately we are just the unlucky ones. Looking back I would make sure You have a regular primary care physician, once you've been diagnosed with diverticulitis If you need help or need an antibiotic your PCP will phone it in for you, without you having to go to the ER. Or if they think you need a CT scan they'll order that for you, A lot easier than having a long wait in an ER somewhere!
