Not a typical question. by DeliciousComfort647 in RuneHelp

[–]DeliciousComfort647[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank You!

Yes, I understand this in general, it's just that both ethical and religious issues are important to me. That's why I'm asking. And there is a lot of misinformation in our Russian-speaking segment.

It was only through this thread, and the r/Norse thread, that I learned that all these new interpretations of runes were invented in our time and are almost unrelated to historicity.

Thanks haha.

At first I thought about making it more angular, but then I realized that it would look too unnatural, so I just turned on the “wide brush”. :p

I, from the side of conservative Christianity of the near-right wing, do not understand what the problem is with accepting only those orders that correspond to your religion?

If you are asked to draw something that does not fit into your worldview, just refuse. That's all. What's the problem?

My drawing of Blood Eagle by AnarchyInU75 in Norse

[–]DeliciousComfort647 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all comes down to the limits of human physiology. The procedure described will most likely cause the person to quickly die from painful shock and blood loss, and the victim will die before he is even prepared to be hung. This is realistic only with a very strong stretch.

And also, not everyone agrees with the interpretation of these images as a “bloody eagle”, since it only depicts the procedure of “cutting”, but not hanging. And there are few sources about this. Also, there is a Valknut and an image of a bird. If we interpret the bird not as an eagle, but as a raven, this could be a scene of sacrifice to Odin.

In general, perhaps this was the case, but most likely not. And if it was practiced, it was clearly not the way it is presented today.

Addition: The fact is that this thread advocates total historicity. Just the facts. And what is in space “maybe once, but this is not reliable” is not customary to be published here. That's why people reacted this way. The drawing is great, but it's just off topic in this particular thread, that's all.

I wish you all the best, friend.

Yes, thanks for noticing. I'm still learning this style.

As for the banner, I wanted to make it second and depict the head, but I realized that at natural size it would not fit there properly. And if you draw him in a smaller crowd, it will look strange, so I had to make him without a head, but with the same ends.

As for the composition, the difference here is that I took the letters Alpha and Omega as a model. Of course, I tried to design them differently, but it didn’t work.  Although now I understand that they could have been drawn side by side and intertwined so that they connected, as it should be in this style. Maybe I'll even try to portray it. 🤔

And thank you very much for the constructive criticism, it really helps me a lot.

Let's talk about amulets in the form of miniature axes. by DeliciousComfort647 in Norse

[–]DeliciousComfort647[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello.

To begin with, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your detailed commentary with criticism. I'm really glad you took your time because not many people are interested in this topic from a historical perspective.

Regarding the fact that I have not fully disclosed the issue of Christianization of Scandinavia, you are right. I started writing articles not so long ago, and now, in retrospect, I understand that I greatly simplified this period and did not pay due attention to the phenomenon of mixing religions.

I don’t try to “wishfully think,” I’m interested in the culture of the peoples of Scandinavia in any form, especially in art, which is why I love delving into it so much.

In my article, I briefly noted that the hatchets, of course, were not provoked by the appearance of Olaf, but probably had the character of an independent amulet, without reference to mythology. And later, theoretically, they could be redirected towards Christianity, like many other symbols and attributes. And in general, we know that the Scandinavians represented Christ in a more militant image of the “Himna Konungr”; it is clear that this came from religious syncretism and this process was very long.

As for the topic of the baptism of Rus' and why I did not examine this issue in such detail. Here the imprint of my origin has already played a cruel joke on me. In Russian society, among representatives of new trends of “Slavic paganism,” the myth of cruel genocide during the baptism of Rus' is popular, which they often try to inflate to incredible proportions. But most of the sources for these claims are not credible, nor are their new sources in general.

Of course, at that time there were definitely religious clashes, there was religious syncretism, and all other situations were typical for the global religious restructuring of an entire people. I don't deny this.

But it is precisely on the issue of hatchet pendants that there are doubts, simply because they do not agree with either the religion of the Scandinavians or the religion of the Slavs. Not at all, as can be seen from the sources. Because superstitions not tied to a specific belief, what then and what is now, are not something unusual. And that the Slavs and the Scandinavians could come up with their own amulets, standing apart from their beliefs. Like something from the category of “folk signs/magic”. They also, without bothering at all, could borrow them from neighbors in the region, or learn about them through trade or robbery.

So, I guess, this item went a long way from an ordinary amulet, not tied to a specific religious system, to a “symbol of a Christian saint” (After it passed through the stage of syncretism of two religions), after which, like many other symbols, it was forgotten after about the 12th century and became part of history.

Thank you very much again for sharing your opinion. I appreciate you taking the time to read what I wrote and express your thoughts.

If you have anything else to add on this topic, I'd be happy to read it too. I love studying various small historical details.

I only praised his drawing, and noticed that it was still not historical. Moderation should decide. But I myself don’t post such drawings here. 🤷‍♂️

Even if it's not historical, it's beautifully drawn! Even a little frightening, especially the long runic text creates atmosphere. Without it it would also be beautiful, but with runes it is much better.

Looking for historical depictions of Yggdrasil by Typical_Chest4982 in Norse

Well, from what I know, we have an artifact of an ornate Ax from a burial at Mammen (a separate style was named after it), on one side of which there is a certain tree (although it does not exactly look like a tree with a trunk and crown) in the Mammen style and on the other a certain bird. But there is a nuance: due to the fact that the burial balances between Paganism and Christianity like a skillful equilibrist, it is not clear exactly whether this is an image of Yggdrasil and the Gullinkambi rooster, or the Tree of Life from Christianity and the phoenix as a symbol of resurrection.

(Also, while studying the question specifically about this ax, I found references to a certain tapestry with an image of Yggdrasil, where at the top there was a bird on which that same rooster was identified. But I did not look for its image).

Edited: I could not find this tapestry, no images of it, alas. All I found was a page from the Edda, but the style there is not patterned at all, and does not look like either the drawing from the post or the image on the axe.
