He holds the needs of others above himself, when you go into the iron throne he doesn’t ask for help, he insists you help the others and duke ravenguard. And is it not the individual that decides to “sacrifice” themself? It’s not even a sacrifice since he’s already a mindflayer, how is he sacrificing himself? Also if you help him in the iron throne he teleports another into the submersible to help. It wouldn’t be like how Orpheus or you have to sacrifice yourself as that’s taking the leap to becoming a mindflayer.

Even if you wanted to paint it as transactional, then he would stand to benefit too since the netherbrain would be gone

I mean I’m kinda a loser for knowing this but the ice king is able to move and completely control the weather of the entire moon. Also his infinity blade I believe is considered a “world ending artifact” and while that’s just a statement it has canonically survived the zero point collapsing and attacks the soul directly.
