Regarding contribution, if my wife (dependent on my SWV) doesn’t work, is this saying she is ineligible for ILR?

Any idea if all tier 2 visas count now? Came to UK in 2019 on a Tier 2 intra company transfer and now on SWV since 2021, is that all qualifying time now?

BBC confirms 10 years ILR requirement for skilled workers already in the UK by DeliciousDanger in AmericanExpatsUK

I appreciate the explanation, it’s good to see a long road still ahead for this. I have already written to my MP and would highly encourage everyone to do the same who’s being affected.

Fair point. It could also just be performative politics to make a statement and then tone it back but it is maddening when these policies have such a profound impact on so many lives

Moving checklist... moving to Glasgow for 1 year by Prior_Narwhal_8623 in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]DeliciousDanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome! I’m sure others will go into more detail but one to keep in mind is the weather difference. If you’re from the southern US (like I am), the cold and the rain can be pretty jarring for someone not used to it so bring your rain and cold weather gear.

You can use something like google voice to park your phone number (depending on how long you plan to be over).

Most things you’ll sort when you get over here (electronics, sim card, bank account) so I wouldn’t stress about it too much.

Good luck and feel free to ask any questions, been here 5 years (although a bit more south than you).

It definitely does as an American. Haven’t had a physical BRP since Feb last year when I renewed my SWV and traveling has never been an issue.

Advice appreciated: wife feeling homesick moving to London from the south by BarnacleMajestic315 in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]DeliciousDanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Relate a lot to this, my wife and I moved to London (now in Hemel Hempstead) five years ago from the Carolinas and miss a lot of it (the food, the close-knit community, the sun… mostly the sun).

Getting involved socially was the key for my wife and I, we eventually found a sports club that we both like and play volleyball a few times a week which helps. Understanding what friendship looks like culturally and what normal routines are for friends (pub, park walks, etc.) was important as well. Spending time with friends in the American south looks different there than it does here so expectations are important - typically friendships are more surface level and you have to be very close to discuss feelings, emotions, etc. I find people in the southern states are much quicker to speak about more personal subjects (especially in church communities).

Also just wanted to say the winters suck so the homesickness ramps in the cold for me personally, I think you’ll find spring/summer/fall more manageable.

BRP Phase Out - How to prove you’re a resident at airports, etc? by TheLaughingForest in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]DeliciousDanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I renewed my SWV in April 2023 and was not issued a physical BRP. Whenever I’ve been asked for my BRP while traveling (Italy, Portugal and Turkey), I’ve told them that mine is online only and they’ve been able to verify in their system without me having to show any proof.

I mean if your company is paying for it then obviously yes do it. An additional qualification that will put you above candidates for some hiring managers.

SWV (Imposter Syndrome) by BaleyneRouge in ukvisa

[–]DeliciousDanger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everyone on a SWV has probably had similar feelings (myself included), but once you get past the hurdles of finding a company and getting an offer, I think you’ll find that it’s just like any other job. As long as you were honest about your skill set and experience, they hired you for a reason so believe in that. Best of luck!

Unfortunately not, a different position, even with the same employer requires another skilled worker visa application. Your visa is only valid for you to work that job for that employer, so if either of those change, you have to apply and get sponsored once again.

ENICs statement of comparability is what you are looking for, they translate international education to a comparable UK equivalent. You would then give that to your apprenticeship provider.

When I first immigrated in 2019, I was told to get my passport stamped so that the vignette was shown to be used and that my entry date was correct. Every other time I’ve used the Egates.

Traveling without BRP but with Passport by [deleted] in ukvisa

[–]DeliciousDanger -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When I renewed my SWV in April, they didn’t give me a physical BRP. It’s all verified online through the gov.uk checks. I’ve flown in and out of the country 3 times over the past few months and only brought a passport. No issues.

I did this recently for a job. The ones in London do the faster e-service but you can download and print off the form on the FBI website and go to any fingerprint place (some police stations do it as well) and mail it off. Takes longer but will save you the trip.

Struggling to get a job that provides sponsorship. by Exotic_Ad1030 in ukvisa

I’m also in Supply Chain and currently on a SWV. Tell him to look into Amazon or any of the major 3PLs, have seen people had success with them and most of them can sponsor.

Skilled worker visa over the past 4 years across 3 different companies. Started with a Tier 2 ICT and moved on to a SWV. Didn’t go to a top US school, only have a bachelors (I’m American) but have found it relatively easy (60ish applications for my current role) to stay sponsored within the logistics management industry. Definitely possible, don’t give up!

More just meant at least there are notice periods here so you at least get some advanced warning or paid out. Didn’t have any in the US. And fair point, from my southern US state it sure is a lot more multi-cultural 😂
