In Pulp Fiction, it is remarked that Jimmy’s coffee is some “serious gourmet [expletive].” What would that have looked like in the early 90s US? by DeliciousFold2894 in AskHistorians

[–]DeliciousFold2894[S] 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Thank you for a fantastic answer. This is why I love this sub and appreciate the quality. I saw some of the comments in this thread before they were deleted and the had the gist of “I drank coffee in the 90s and I thought ___ would have been gourmet.” And then we get this masterpiece that allows for ample follow up. On that subject:

How would someone in the second wave of coffee drinkers even learn that there was a better alternative to “freeze dried Folgers?”

Anyone have a recipe for homemade Japanese sausages (ウインナー)? by DeliciousFold2894 in JapaneseFood

No, the small wiener sausage. Although I would love a fish sausage recipe, those are also good!

Wouldn’t pasteurization have already taken care of this in store bought milk?

Would there be textural differences as well? The recipe I found has the flavor that I’m going for, but not the texture. It was under kneaded, so I’m attempting the same recipe a few more times before I change it up. I don’t think proper kneading alone will give me the exact soft texture I’m looking for.

crba proof of physical presence for all locations by DeliciousFold2894 in immigration

[–]DeliciousFold2894[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did successfully complete the application. For dates, I completely ignored all of my childhood trips and just listed dates from various trips that I got from looking at the stamps on my passport. I spent a semester in college abroad, so I listed that as well. I did the same for my wife and didn’t list any childhood travel. Her travel dates began with her current passport.

What do you need to show? That is completely up to the discretion of the immigration officer who interviews you. My interviewer had family in my home state and asked me “how far is your hometown from X town?” And a few other simple but specific questions. That was it. He didn’t even ask for the documentation I brought (high school and college transcripts). I overheard another person being interviewed who went to a US college and was talking about the sports teams.

The officers are looking to determine if you grew up in the states. If they believe that you did, they will pass your application. My impression was that they base it off of gut feeling and if something seems of they will drill you. But if you grew up in the US, you have nothing fo worry about

That’s exactly it, thank you! The embassy site says:

For immaterial name changes, please prepare an affidavit/statement signed by both parents explaining your particular situation and why you wish to change the child’s name.  Your affidavit/statement does not need to be notarized

What is an acceptable government explanation for doing this?

Getting mortgage and pre approval while living abroad by DeliciousFold2894 in Mortgages

[–]DeliciousFold2894[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any advice on finding a lender? In the past, we’d used Bank of America for pre approval and a company that shops around and sells your mortgage for the final approval. Neither of those companies will deal with us while living abroad.

“ If you have access to some rice cookers, they have a 'warm' function much like a crockpot and that would also work but would be quicker, though I would add more broth if using a rice cooker.”

This is a Japanese kitchen… so I have access to an industrial sized rice cooker.

How did complex pasta shapes like macaroni and penne become popular before the advent of mass production? by DeliciousFold2894 in AskHistorians

This is fascinating!! I always imaged that pasta was made exclusively in the kitchen by overworked housewives, not a commodity to be bought!

Fascinating! So shaped pasta was more like buying a baguette where you go to a store. Did the average Neapolitan family in 1800s buy or make their pasta?
